Tory MP David Davies said it could be a scandal and 'the NHS needs to fully investigate'

Lets hope so! Its scandalous

So autistic children below the age of consent are being given life altering medication, untested both for this purpose and untested on children while doctors stand back in thrall to pressure groups who demand that this happens.

First do no harm rinse and repeat......

HawkeyeInConfusion · 22/07/2018 12:10

I complained to the BBC that they were saying that puberty blockers were reversible. Their response (along with the hands in ears, not listening attitude) was that the NHS says they're reversible.

The NHS really needs to sort out the messages they are sending. And ask themselves some serious questions.

And the BBC need to review the quality of their journalists and researchers if they don't look beyond the NHS website for information.

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/07/2018 12:15

Their response (along with the hands in ears, not listening attitude) was that the NHS says they're reversible.

Email them back and attach them package insert/prescribing information. They are not.

I had the same ‘lalala’ message back and the page is still up. Is there not some sort of body you can complain to about pushing medically inaccurate info? I should know this...

Bowl Might you email the Chief Medical Officer?

Racecardriver · 22/07/2018 12:24

This is the thalidomide of the 21st century. It was pretty obvious from the beginning that this was going to get put of hand. What started off as an act of compassion for a few pyscihpligucally very disturbed children has resulted in a feedback loop where those who recieved this treatment or permitted their children need more and more children, parents and, health practitioners to do this in order to validate the choices they made themselves. Inevitably vulnerable children, autistic children inevitably forming a large proportion, are being stunted and sterilised to prove that it was OK to do it to the children who had it done before them. When the children who have had these treatments become adults of child baring years only to realise that the womb transplants and chest feeding they were promised never materialised shit will hit the fan.

ChattyLion · 22/07/2018 12:26

CMO is a great idea.

HawkeyeInConfusion · 22/07/2018 12:28

Bowl I emailed them twice. They clearly didn't want to know.

But I have saved the exchange, so when the scandal breaks and fingers are pointed towards the BBC then they can't say they weren't warned.

Emailing the Chief Medical Officer might be a good move. Especially if from someone with a science/medical background or someone with personal experience of taking them (even as an adult).

ChattyLion · 22/07/2018 12:29

www.nhs.uk/aboutnhschoices/pages/nhschoicesintroduction.aspx

NHS choices is meant to apply the Information Standard to its information.
It would not be OK for it to include pseudoscience, political lobbying or wishful fantasy fulfilment stuff.

reeldoop · 22/07/2018 12:30

I am a non GC woman (dont wear dresses or skirts, work in tech, very independent, always liked taking things apart, played video games from a very young age, fix everything in the house etc etc) with undiagnosed Asperger's (I strongly suspect) and OCD which was severe as a teen, goth, alienated etc. Classic tomboy as a child, including the usual phase of having short hair and insisting everyone called me a boys name. I had an entire boy alter ego from the age of 6 to about 10. I suspect if the internet had been around then I would have probably concluded I "should" have been a man and might possibly have got sucked into transitioning.

I still feel like men have a much easier life than women in general, have many advantages over women and it would have been great to be one. I am however firmly a woman. When I grew up and matured I realised I had male-envy but do not actually feel I should be one. I have enjoyed pregnancy and having children. I would have been devastated to get to age 30 (when I first started considering children, no desire before then) to realise I couldn't due to drugs I had taken as an immature teen.

Luckily my teenage angst has left me with some anxiety/ocd issues and some terrible photos of dodgy hair and makeup, which my kids find hilarious (as well as a pretty strong independent character and much resilience) rather than irreversible sterility and medical problems for middle age. I feel now like it could have been very different and worry about girls like me who are now becoming teens.

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/07/2018 12:31

hawkeye and rowan that’s a great idea. I’ll put something together next week. Thank you!

This issue out of all the issues is the one that actually upsets me - everything else I get angry at but this, it’s so awful. I feel like I’m shouting into the void

ChattyLion · 22/07/2018 12:48

CMO and Chief Digital Officer, could jointly ask the Clinical Information Advisory Group (see below) to undertake an immediate review of these pages for their medical and scientific accuracy against the available evidence and to demonstrate back to CMO and CDO, the CIAG’s evidence basis for their presentation of medical treatments, risks, benefits and outcomes on NHS choices website, and how this complied with the Information Standard:

From the NHS choices website:

www.nhs.uk/aboutNHSChoices/aboutnhschoices/Aboutus/Pages/Governance.aspx

Governance of the NHS website (www.nhs.uk)

The NHS website (www.nhs.uk) is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). The content, data and services on the website are commissioned by NHS England and delivered by NHS Digital.
The governance processes support the delivery of the core services and drive the continuous transformation of www.nhs.uk to ensure it meets evolving user needs and adapts to changing technologies.
The governance structure includes:
The Empower the Person Board

The Empower the Person Board defines and manages the strategic direction and priorities for the NHS website, as part of a wider portfolio of programmes working to deliver digital content, services and tools to patients and the public. It is chaired by NHS England’s Chief Digital Officer and its membership includes representatives from NHS England, NHS Digital, the DHSC, Public Health England, the Local Government Association and the Infrastructure and Projects Authority.
It is accountable to the Digital Delivery Board (DDB), which is chaired by the National Director for Operations and Information.

The Clinical Information Advisory Group

The Clinical Information Advisory Group (CIAG) is part of the overall governance of the Digital Services delivery programme. The group is responsible for setting editorial and data quality standards for NHS Choices and for providing overall clinical governance for the service.

I feel the same bowl. As a GNC female, who has recently received an ASD diagnosis, this aspect of the ideology strikes very close to home. Sad

ChattyLion · 22/07/2018 12:58

Apologies (just in relation to my post above at 12.48) it’s the NHS Choices treatment section which gives a partial picture about the risks of blockers and the achievable results of surgery: www.nhs.uk/conditions/gender-dysphoria/treatment/

R0wantrees · 22/07/2018 13:04

I think there may be some questions to ask with regards the influence / scope and role of GIRES.
As it has charitable status, annual meeting minutes are available:
www.gires.org.uk/about-us/annual-meetings/

Wanderabout · 22/07/2018 13:07

Great idea. What about making this an open letter and approach concerned professionals who have already spoken out to sign as well?

Starkstaring · 22/07/2018 13:07

As a parent I am truly grateful that other people can see what is happening to people like my daughter. It is impossible to speak out in real life, as you are labelled as unsupportive or transphobic, or simply not able to come to terms with your child being born in the wrong body.

What I want most of all is for her to have time, objective and compassionate therapy, untainted by ideology (of any persuasion) and to be free of external pressure in making any potentially irreversible physical changes. I can't see that happening.

2014 Annual report & accounts
GENDER IDENTITY RESEARCH AND EDUCATION SOCIETY (GIRES)
Registered Charity No: 1068137

(extract)
c. In the UK, GIRES has sought the adoption of those standards by serving on the intercollegiate committee, which has published the Good Practice Guidelines, and on the NHS England (NHSE) Clinical Reference Group, which is developing the specifications for gender identity services for adults. GIRES is also currently contributing to the improvement of the service specification for children and adolescents. However, even as standards are improving, capacity within the NHSE specialist gender services for adults has not, overall, kept pace with the continuing growth in numbers. Waiting lists are often much more than a year and worsening. Financial pressures on NHSE are likely to restrict funding for additional capacity. In order to augment capacity and provide the required equity of access to services for gender nonconforming individuals who need treatment, NHSE may consider upskilling GPs so that the less specialist elements of care can be offered locally and more promptly in tandem with the specialist clinics. This would improve the mental health of the individuals who would otherwise be waiting for care and address the risks associated with their obtaining unsupervised hormone medication via the internet. Gender treatments are not part of standard medical training in the UK. GIRES has therefore been working with professionals, trans service users and families to develop e-learning resources for:
 GPs, in collaboration with the Royal College of GPs (funded by GIRES): gires.org.uk/gender-variance
 School nurses, health visitors, Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services, teachers and other providers of care, , as well as families, in collaboration with the Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (funded by Health Education England): gires.org.uk/caring-for-gender-nonconforming-young-people
Through its membership of the National LGB&T Partnership, GIRES is leading a project to develop a series of factsheets that will inform gender conforming people about practical ways to improve their own health and wellbeing.
The Partnership has published the first seven factsheets and a further series is now being developed:

2017 GIRES AGM
attended by Baroness Barker (LibDem & Chair of recent Westminster Policy Forum Next Steps for Transgender Equality

(extract)
'5. Any Other Business
Ben Vincent invited engagement from attendees in the development of their transgender
healthcare book. The meeting closed at 3.33 pm.
Afterwards members discussed three ways to influence government policy. First, NHS England is seeking views, by 16 October, about its proposals regarding gender identity services for adults. Secondly, the Government Equalities Office (GEO) has launched a survey, which runs until 15 October, among LGBT people about their experiences and the improvements they seek in public servicers. Thirdly, the GEO plans a consultation in the autumn on reducing the bureaucratic and medical burdens in obtaining gender recognition.
There was also a concurrent workshop for families of gender diverse people.'

enoughisenough12 · 22/07/2018 13:22

GIRES is one of the organisations that quite openly publishes advice to professionals to keep confidentiality for an individual child. I always wonder about what (if any) safeguarding experience / qualifications they have that they can so openly do this?

PositivelyPERF · 22/07/2018 13:33

But the TRAs say that primary aged children are old enough to understand ‘gender’ and old enough to take drugs that may seriously damage their health.

GGs say that parents can’t be told when their daughters are sharing with those with Male sexed bodies.

TRAs want children to keep secrets from their parents and for the adults responsible for those children, eg teachers, to keep the same children’s confusion over ‘gender’, from their parents.

Children are being failed and being put at risk of their bodies being ruined and the governments sit back and say “poor trans people are the most oppressed”. NO! Just NO! Those children that the TRAs are trying to manipulate, are the most oppressed. Anyone supporting the transing of children should hang their heads in shame, at the attempts to abuse the most vulnerable in our society.

  1. Any Other Business
None. The Meeting closed at 3.30pm. Afterwards Baroness Barker spoke on Parliamentary and political aspects of current transgender issues and Dr. Helen Webberley spoke on transgender health care as a GP. Other matters discussed included the Report of the House of Commons Women & Equalities Committee Inquiry, Brexit, trans*formation and trans individuals in prison. There was also a workshop for families of gender nonconforming people. Bernard and Terry were thanked for their hospitality and we all clapped when Baroness Barker praised Terry for her great vision and persistence.'

I think the very best thing that the CMO could do is clarify and make explicit the difference between sex and gender and recognise the widespread confusion /potential risks / issues / obfuscation and / or misunderstandings which currently exist.
