Hey daim. Look forward to seeing you there. More people with opposing viewpoints should turn up.
Maybe you'll realise that the meetings are not full of hate, but genuine concern about the rights of women and girls.
Do you care about those things? Hope so.

NotTerfNorCis · 13/07/2018 22:11

The Quaker statement said:

Similar events have been run in other parts of the country and have resulted in acrimony and discord. The organisers of the meeting planned to be held in Brighton were made aware that they would need the services of a private security company to maintain public order.

We are extremely uneasy that our decision may result in the suppression of free speech and in particular suppression of natal women's voices.

They went on to say that the meeting didn't showcase both sides of the debate. But would a meeting of TRAs allow gender critical views? Of course not. For that matter, would the meeting of a political party give a platform to someone from the other side? Very unlikely. So why inflict these criteria on WPUK?

daimbars · 13/07/2018 22:14

Of course I care about women's rights. I am genuinely interested in this issue - I wouldn't be on here so often otherwise.

I'm also aware it's trans pride in Brighton next Sat so I hope there won't be any GC plots to sabotage it. I'll be keeping my ear to the ground.

Quite like the idea of being a spy.

thebewilderness · 13/07/2018 22:16

Heaven forefend that homosexuals attend Pride. That would be sabotage.

MsMcWoodle · 13/07/2018 22:16

Which James Bond are you? SC or RM? I'm guessing RM.
He was my favourite BTW.

ImPreCis · 13/07/2018 22:17

I am going. Was a bit concerned about going to the Hastings one due to the bomb threat, but good security at the venue and a fantastic meeting. I’m sure Brighton will be just as good.

Oh do go Pratchet, you are one of my heroes on here, would love to know I am at the same meeting as you

daimbars · 13/07/2018 22:18

I likes Roger Moore too but I'm a more modern day Bond.

There's rumours the next Bond will be black - I'm him.

MsMcWoodle · 13/07/2018 22:20

Sorry Daim. Can't see you as Idris Elba if that's what you have in mind.
Maybe Janet from the secret seven?

daimbars · 13/07/2018 22:21

I'd rather be Fanny or George but I'll settle for Janet.

iamawoman · 13/07/2018 22:28

Have booked my ticket.
Dont go to the marlborough pub beforehand - terfs are not welcome apparently

MsMcWoodle · 13/07/2018 22:29

I thought that Fanny was the Aunt.
Maybe you could be Aunt Lydia?

NotTerfNorCis · 13/07/2018 22:35

Maybe you could be Aunt Lydia?

Or Ofwarren.

daimbars · 13/07/2018 22:36

Fuck it I'm going as Enid Blyton herself. The original 1950s feminist.

Melamin · 13/07/2018 22:38

Daim, I can't see you going there and keeping your trap shut. You may as well wear a sign and have done with it.

Wanderabout · 13/07/2018 22:42

I'm also aware it's trans pride in Brighton next Sat so I hope there won't be any GC plots to sabotage it. I'll be keeping my ear to the ground.

Lol @ 'sabotage Pride' being used to describe 'protest in favour of lesbian rights at Pride'

Ereshkigal · 13/07/2018 22:44

Is it just for trans people Brighton Pride?

daimbars · 13/07/2018 22:44

The Forthcoming Pride in Brighton is just trans pride - nowt to do with lesbians.

NotTerfNorCis · 13/07/2018 22:45

The Forthcoming Pride in Brighton is just trans pride - nowt to do with lesbians.

So you admit transwomen can't be lesbians?

daimbars · 13/07/2018 22:46

Ereshkigal Trans Pride is on the weekend of 22nd July and Pride is weekend 4th August. We love a Pride here in Brighton - it's Disability Pride tomorrow. I'm not disabled but going as an ally.

AngryAttackKittens · 13/07/2018 22:59

Funny, I've been watching a (very upsetting) show about homeless women in Brighton - do they get a Pride too or are they not stunning and brave enough?

daimbars · 13/07/2018 23:06

AAA so many homeless women in Brighton these days. Sad

I've also noticed a lot of homeless trans women. The Green Party are being very slow to address it, big drug and gang problems here too. It's not all prides, rainbows and unicorns.

AngryAttackKittens · 13/07/2018 23:11

I dunno that I'd be feeling terribly smug about my city if it was doing such a shit job of dealing with a rising homelessness problem. That program is an excellent join up the dots lesson in terms of how high a proportion of the homeless women are care leavers, what happens when they get pregnant, and how often they end up having their kids taken away. These are all related issues, and treating them as separate clearly isn't working.

daimbars · 13/07/2018 23:18

AAK what's the programme?

It's a well known fact Westminster council gives homeless people in London one way train tickets to Brighton. We're seen as a soft touch down here so get an influx of people, especially in the summer.

There are loads of charities and initiatives that help women - St Peters Church gets them in for showers, food, haircuts and getting their nails done so they feel clean and human. I'm proud my city does that rather than palm them off or skew the stats like Boris Johnson.

AngryAttackKittens · 13/07/2018 23:30

What's meant to happen to those people in the winter though? I mean, you'd think that the people handing out those tickets would realize that winter does inevitably arrive roughly on schedule. I've never been to Brighton, but it looked pretty damn cold in the winter parts of the program.

This is the program (link is to most recent episode).

I think the loathsomeness of Boris Johnson is one thing we'll have absolutely no disagreement over.
