JackyHolyoake · 14/07/2018 14:25

You will receive an email late in the day ...

iamawoman · 14/07/2018 15:11

Ok thanks

BeUpStanding · 14/07/2018 15:21

I've got my ticket. Looking forward to it

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 14/07/2018 15:41

Looking forward to seeing you again, BeUpStanding.

Acorninspring · 14/07/2018 20:13

I'm going, looking forward to it, although it's a real shame Brighton Quakers pulled out at last minute. I know there are gender critical Quakers on here from previous threads, maybe they should consider speaking with Quakers at Brighton Meeting to understand more about what happened?

I wish I could go....
I hope there will be one in the vicinity of Birmingham soon.

Thankyou to all those attending, who speak for me. Thanks to the organisers for remaining strong in the face of opposition and threats.

ArcheryAnnie · 14/07/2018 21:36

I can't find the statement from Brighton Quakers on their twitter, and the screenshot Acorninspring posted is alas too little for me to read, even on my laptop. Might anyone have a transcript, please?

Quakers are currently having a campaign about the Lobbying Act's effect on free speech. Caving in to TRA threats and silencing women as a result really isn't a good look for Brighton Quakers at all.

UpstartCrow · 14/07/2018 21:54

ArcheryAnnie - any errors are mine;

Brighton Quakers were asked to hire out one of their rooms to a campaign group set up to ensure that women's voices are heard in the debate around proposals to change the Gender Recognition Act. Having considered the issue further and having consulted with other interested parties we have decided to cancel the booking. we have not come to that decision lightly.

The meeting which was to have taken place in our building was advertised as including spoken contributions from people active in the area of natal women's rights who have expressed concern about the implications of the proposed changed to The Gender Recognition Act. The meeting was to have been open to anyone who bought a valid ticket via an internet booking site. As such, the attendance was not limited to members of the campaign group and we believe it likely that many tickets have been bought by people, including Trans women, strinly opposed to the vies being expressed by the events organisers.

Similar events have been run in other parts of the country and have resulted in acrimony and discord. the organisers of the meeting planned to be held in Brighton were made aware that they would need the services of a private security company to maintain public order. We are also mindful that Brighton Trans Pride is being held in the same week (including events taking place close to Brighton Quakers' premises on the same evening) and that the annual Trans, Non Binary and Intersex conference is due to be held at Brighton University on 19/2- July.

We are extremely uneasy that our decision may result in the suppression of free speech and in particular suppression of natal women's voices. However, we do not believe that a meeting of this kind (open to all with a purchased ticket but focused on one particular viewpoint) will enhance the wider debate or mutual understanding of the very strongly held concerns of different parties. We think it more likely to aggravate the situation.

Instead we intend to work with local groups and agencies to set up one or more meetings at which the different views and concerns can be addressed with the help of people skilled in mediation. If it is appropriate to all concerned we would be happy to offer our Meeting House as a venue for these (flora?) We will ensure that all voices are heard in a safe, respectful and thoughtful atmosphere. We believe
this approach reflects out Qualer commitment ''to respect that of God in everyone though it be expressed in unfamiliar ways or be difficult to detect''. It will also align with our historic commitment to work for peace.

I could only find the statement on twitter, not on their website, I don't know why. I'm assuming it is genuine.

NynaeveSedai · 14/07/2018 22:11

Please note that's not a public statement. It's a statement that was written in case WPUK wanted to go public. As you can see someone with access has taken and shared a screenshot

Acorninspring · 14/07/2018 22:27

Ah good point. My mistake.I was assuming since it was being shared on Twitter that it was a public statement. Should I ask for it to be taken down?

Wanderabout · 14/07/2018 22:27

Not sure what you mean?

UpstartCrow · 14/07/2018 22:28

It reads like a public statement?

NynaeveSedai · 14/07/2018 22:40

It’s a statement that the MH wrote after the meeting and supplied to WPUK for public sharing if they chose to. Neither MH or WPUK shared this publicly. It doesn’t matter now as it’s out there.

PlonitbatPlonit · 14/07/2018 22:43

Why did the Quakers then release it in such a way that it could be published on twitter by transactivists, NynaeveSedai?

WPUK only made any statement on the change of venue after this Public Statement was already on twitter.

dianebrewster · 14/07/2018 22:48

Who was it first shared it?

Wanderabout · 14/07/2018 22:50

Ah I didn't realise that.

Which transactivists shared it first?

LadyJaneGreyspen · 14/07/2018 22:51

Brighton council are intentional making people homeless. They don’t really want people in shared accommodation above commercial properties.

Procrastinator1 · 14/07/2018 22:58

How is that relevant LadyJaneGreyspen?

LadyJaneGreyspen · 14/07/2018 23:27

sorry that was at AngryAttackKittens . It is a diffferent issue. re brighton. They are social cleansing the city with regards to housing which will effect students and those low on the income scale

NynaeveSedai · 14/07/2018 23:30

The quakers didn't release it Confused
Terfblocker posted it on twitter after they were provided with this screenshot of a MH document.
