A letter to a female transactivist

Just saw this on Twitter. Brilliant

"A man is not a woman. There’s no medical procedure that can change sex in humans or any other mammal. When you fight for the right of men to call themselves “women” and enter woman-only spaces on the basis of their say so, you are doing what Men’s Rights Activists have always done. You are violating women’s boundaries for personal gain. You are allowing men to colonise women’s spaces. You are creating a climate of fear where women and girls will start to withdraw from public life, because all semblance of safety – access to sex seggregated spaces when they are vulnerable – will be destroyed. Your activism is not feminism, it’s at best a misguided naiveté, and at worst opportunism to get ahead while throwing other women under the bus. And by the time you realise how foolish you’ve been, because you are “just” a woman in those men’s eyes, it’ll be too late. The way entitled men disrespect women, the way they mow women down, the way they put their own needs, feelings and wants before women’s lives and livelihoods, they’ll do the same to you when you’re no longer useful to them."

I'm getting a bit tired of the "cowardice of Finn" thing - once was okay, but it's just going round in circles now.

Normally I'm not one for "character arcs" (aka the insistence that character development be modeled on some crappy American self help book, where the actual plot of the film becomes incidental to the main character's voyage of discovery), but I'll make an exception for Finn: I think it would actually make for a more interesting story if he finally grew up and actually did the decent thing for once off his own bat instead of being forced into it by circumstances.

And Poe is just getting annoying with his gung-ho pretty-boy thing. (Though someone on one of the film threads did put forward the theory that there was actually a subtle feminist point being made - that Admiral Holdo had it all under control in a subtle, outmanoeuvre the enemy sort of way, and Poe's hyper-masculine "shoot first" attitude cocks it up for everyone).

They're teddy bear with bows and arrows!

FermatsTheorem · 29/05/2018 23:15

You can't beat Teddy Bears with bows and arrows.

Jar Jar was very, very annoying. Haven't decided one way or the other about the "space puffins" in the latest one.

fermats

I think finn will be different in number 9... i think he has learned a lesson from Rose (was it rose?)

I loved it in number 7 but i agree it may be slightly more tiresome in number 8

Any hooo....off to bed, night all

ReluctantCamper · 29/05/2018 23:17

and what's wrong with that AAK?

they also wear some rather nifty robin of sherwood (ahhh, the hooded man) type accessories too.

they are teddy bears, dressed in eighties leather with bows and arrows.

i rest my case m'lud.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 29/05/2018 23:17

Jar jar is a twat...end of

FermatsTheorem · 29/05/2018 23:18

Night night, all.

ReluctantCamper · 29/05/2018 23:20

yeah me too (bed I mean). I'm in spain, so it's 00:20 here Shock

AngryAttackKittens · 29/05/2018 23:22

Sleep well and possibly dream of heavily armed teddy bears!

MissSusanSays · 30/05/2018 07:02

Ah man. I sent that message and then went to bed. And then you all had an awesome convo about Star Wars. Grin

As far as I am concern d there is only one question about the new films: will Kylo and Rey get it on or is he lost to the dark side completely. I thought their sections of the last film were the best and most convincing (apart from Luke sob).

Bowlofbabelfish · 30/05/2018 07:52

Blade runner is one of my all time favourites AAK and I was fully prepared to loathe the sequel but it was actually pretty good.

A few things about it made me feel very sad - the corporate dystopia in the first one was seen as a possible future and now it’s just how things are IRL. But it’s an OK film. Nowhere near the majesty of the first but still alright.

I become so furry in my last pregnancy that I actually resembled a tiny ewok. I rather miss it.
