A woman was thrown out of a FB feminist group for challenging the idea that transwomen get periods.

apparently they DO get periods just without the small aspect of bleeding.

She was told that she was minimising transwomen's periods.

I suspect it’s some sort of spoof site.

Nope. There's loads of this stuff online.

"Yes, Transwomen can get Period Symptoms" - saying HRT gives TWs periods, just without the blood

"Ashley’s a 23-year-old trans girl who’s been on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for over a year. She takes a cocktail of the antiandrogen spironolactone and estradiol, a form of estrogen.

About five months into her treatment, she began experiencing a predictable pattern of symptoms: First would come the soreness and swelling in her chest along with bouts of nausea; the next day, she’d endure painful abdominal cramping lasting minutes at a time, as well as constant nausea, hot flashes, dizziness, photosensitive migraines, and bloating. This cycle, she says, lasts for about six to seven days and repeats roughly every five weeks."

That sounds troubling. Not a period though.

I am concerned Ashley needs to see a doctor but is so desperate to be a woman, they're interpreting side effects of the drugs - or some other condition - as validation in stead of something to be looked at with some urgency!

grandplans · 25/04/2018 19:46

Ereshkigal cross post.

What happened to being concerned about drugs companies putting profit before health?

Is healthy cynicism unfashionable now?

The backlash when they finally understand they've been duped and what they've lost isn't going to be pretty Sad

thebewilderness · 25/04/2018 19:50

The mod responses seems to vary. One mods troll is another mods earnest transgender advocate just trying to reason with the uppity women who are being mean.

MaisyPops · 25/04/2018 20:08

I don't doubt that the hormones cause side effects such as bloating, migraines etc, possibly as some of the contraceptive pills might, but that's just the medicine not their biology or uterus. Entirely different and a uniquely trans women's experience

This. It is more than possible to value the experiences of trans people as their experiences without getting drawn into factually inaccuate claims that biological human males have periods.

I wouldn't choose to misgender someone in conversation to score points. Some choose to but it isn't violence.
But pointing out someone is biologically male when discussing claims of biology is not misgendering.

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 25/04/2018 20:34

pointing out someone is biologically male when discussing claims of biology is not misgendering

Abso-fucking-lutley

Getting a bit concerned that ds1 period hasnt turned up

One assumes thats ok to discuss as we can't actually be arsed with biology anymore

How the fuck did datun get deleted???

Chopraka · 25/04/2018 20:39

Just read that article. Yes, sounds plausible that there are side effects from the HRT these men are taking. Interesting that some report the side effects as being cyclical.

Ekphrasis · 25/04/2018 21:13

I have wondered if the cyclical thing is in any way related to what I believe is a mild cyclical thing men have anyway - my science is extremely hazy but I do remember something on the radio about male cycles being biannual and possibly less. Completely anecdotal But a colleague who was very experienced at working with quite severely affected children with autism who could become quite distressed and frustrated, was often convinced some appeared to have cyclical cycles of mood that she correlated to the moon cycles.

But it's still not female menstruation.

Ekphrasis · 25/04/2018 21:27

I'm cringing a bit posting this but it starts off horribly and ends basically saying fuck off with your period appropriation.

Somewhere else it mentioned that low testosterone in men leaves them feeling pretty "cranky". So if any of this is true (there are skeptics) its possibly basic male biology reacting to excessive female hormones.

Ekphrasis · 25/04/2018 21:28

excessive synthetic female hormones.

MaisyPops · 25/04/2018 21:33

Chopraka
It's absolutely believable that there can be side effects from taking hormones (after all biological women who go through early menopause take HRT).
However, why can't we (rightly!) explore the experiences which do affect trans women rather than try to deny biology or pretend that individuals who lack the required reproductive organs can have a menstrual cycle.

thebewilderness · 25/04/2018 21:34

How the fuck did datun get deleted???
My thought exactly!

Datun · 25/04/2018 21:40

I can't remember what I wrote now!

But I'm fairly sure my point was reiterated in subsequent posts.

I occasionally come across old posts of mine when I'm searching for something and think blimey that sounds alright, that does. With zero recollection of ever having written it...

Ardant · 25/04/2018 21:40

Did you quote something else that got deleted?

Melamin · 25/04/2018 21:41

As far as I can remember, it was a very good post (as usual) about needing the right language to describe our experience. Nothing that hasn't been posted before Confused

MIdgebabe · 25/04/2018 21:43

I can truthfully say that many things in life have felt like violence or threats or pushing boundaries. Rape to banter.

I have often had an incorrect pronoun used ( different cultures or people who younonly work with remotely) It felt nothing like violence or threat or even pushing boundaries. It didn't seem disrespectful even. At the worst I got huffy at the implied sterotype.

Datun · 25/04/2018 21:45

I don't think so.

I may not have even commented (as I've seen all that kind of tripe before) if a pp hadn't said it was unfair to express an opinion about it.

Not that I don't understand why they said that. Because it can look like one of those piss taking threads. But because it is, indeed, a fundamental aspect of the ideology which gets relentlessly brushed under the carpet by transactivists.

So if I ever feel even a hint of 'don't go there', it brings me out in hives and makes me type.

Datun · 25/04/2018 21:45

Oh sorry, that was to Ardant.

Strawberry2017 · 25/04/2018 21:51

I usually avoid commenting on these poets but I've really had enough now.
It's almost like being a women is a dirty word now.
Adding Cis to the beginning - why? I didn't ask for a change in title
pregnant person not pregnant women
Chest feeding not breast feeding
And now to top it off your telling me someone born a man thinks they are having periods?

The world has gone mad.

I always say, be who you want and believe what you want but don't try and force your beliefs or change things for me. I'm happy as I am.

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 25/04/2018 22:11

Reporting fatigue, constant hunger and increased irritability, the men spoke of symptoms that suggested their 'time of the month' is just as intrusive and inconvenient as the equivalent female process

What now!??!!??!?

Fuck off Angry

And i know that the article agrees by the end

But seriously...i will not be responsible for my fucking actions if some utter twat says that to me

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 25/04/2018 22:12

I am swearing A LOT tonight

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 25/04/2018 22:15

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 25/04/2018 22:16

“Deliberately using the wrong pronoun is an act of violence”

Bother I was hoping the writer would explain what this meant

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 25/04/2018 22:16

Nobody tell bewilderness to stop posting her rules of that thing beginning with M that I can't spell

It'll be fucking armaggedon

HerFemaleness · 25/04/2018 22:18

Datun, you need to find out why you got deleted. The mystery is killing us.

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 25/04/2018 22:18
