Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Is feminism inherently sexist? Anybody for human rights anymore?

Feminism appears to only ever advocate for women's rights alone, even when we mention gender equality it is immediately presumed that it's an issue where women are in need of support and empowerment.
Is that not inherently sexist, solely focusing on the rights of only a subset of our species, why are we not advocating for human rights anymore?
There are at least 6 separate organisations where I work that advocate for gender equality and/or diversity and/or women's rights, and every one of them is focused on women's rights. Where I work females out perform and out number men, I don't understand how I'm suppose to be at an advantage because I'm a man, and there's not a single group I can go to for support as none of those groups are willing to offer me any of their services.
I'm all for human rights and consider myself an individualist where people should be awarded things on merit, but even when trying to pose questions in what should be a critical thinking environment I get branded a sexist and a misogynist. Without anyone acknowledging and critiquing my ideas, I'm personally attacked and disregarded, is that because I'm a man?

Oh I fell asleep and missed the rhino song. Work of genius. I can feel the ride turning. Those donkeys are on the run.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/04/2018 07:50

Can we not get the fun kind of troll for a change?

I remembered a book from another thread 'Round about a Pound a Week' - it's fascinating - a woman spoke to, and noted down everything about the lives of families on a road in Vauxhall.

I read the chapters around food, and, these men putting food on the table, made sure that most of it went in their own mouths (having been prepared and served and cleaned up after by their wives) - the money the women brought in went straight into the family pot, the money the men brought in often went into those mens stomachs in the form of booze and the lions share of the food.

It's not as bad as that now, but the attitudes still exist - penis portions, the man putting putting the roof over the family's head so he deserves more - just read the relationship board to see it - that's the patriarchy, that's why women still need liberating.

Oh, I forgot the link:

It's been digitised so you can read it on the computer - but I warn you, if you get started, you'll find a couple of hours have passed and you haven't done anything you should be doing!

reluctant

Oh well thats good Grin

I was a bit worried then...really didnt think self flagellation would be your thing

Although you keep coming back to the feminist board so maybe it is Grin

"I take your points that maybe I should start something up, and I might if I can find like minded individualist people, but it won't be to solely help men in adversity, as that would defeat the purpose of this post."

blinks

Did you really just say that you are not prepared to start a group to help men in adversity, because it would stop you whining on the internet that women haven't already done it?

Confused

For anyone who hasn't read it, this blog is essential reading - by Jessica Eaton, comparing the responses she gets to the charity she and her husband set up to help men (only men) at risk of suicide, versus the responses she gets to her research into violence against women.

Dod you know when the suffragettes were fighting for the vote a poll was done showing that 60% or so percent of women didn't want the vote. Why? Because if you had the vote you had to enlist in the army.

Fascinating. I’d love to read this poll from the turn of the century, the era I believe people refer to as the Glory Days of Accurate Market Research.

Out of interest, when they polled men about whether they’d like to be able to vote - as long as they enlisted - what were the results?

Xenophile · 20/04/2018 08:22

Oh, this thread is a joy!

Even the somewhat ridiculous “I watched The Red Pill and it changed my life” person is a welcome change. —despite her belief that we’re all far too stupid to have listened to MRA arguments about why men should be allowed to rape women with impunity—

I quite liked the belief that women in areas where men go to shoot at each other are somehow protected by those men. I’m sure all those women raped and murdered by those lovely protective men throughout history feel loads better.

Anyway, I have to go and fettle my poor DS. I’ll let him know how sad OP is that he has such an awful human for a mother. I’m sure he’ll laugh like a drain.

Xenophile · 20/04/2018 08:25

Bollocks!

Crossing out fail. Stupid fat phone fingers.

Has he gotten to the Titanic yet?

MrsUnderwood · 20/04/2018 08:59

@0phelia every day’s a school day on Mumsnet. If I saw you drinking fennel tea I would think you had a bit of constipation, or a stomach ache, as that’s what we use it for. But I like cooking up potions and herbal remedies so that’s just me.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/04/2018 09:06

So wait, does Ophelia drink it because she likes the taste? I like a lot of herbal teas (don't kill me!) but the one that I just can't make myself drink no matter how good for me it's meant to be is nettle. Just the smell makes me want to run away.

What do you think the FEM in feminism stands for, hedgehogs?

AngryAttackKittens · 20/04/2018 09:17

Does OP know about humanism! Sounds like it would be just what he's looking for!

Until he realizes that whinging at women isn't really essential to the philosophy. Then he'll be sad.

cforte0 · 20/04/2018 09:23

This gist of the responses has answered my question "is that because I'm a man?". I appreciate everyone who considered my circumstances with some concern, even the harsh criticism which I'll take constructively.

I understand that some/many feminists, such as some of you here, see me as a villain so that allows you to dehumanise me with no remorse. Some of the abuse and lack of empathy here is appalling, which I was expecting but was hoping for different, on a forum for parents. I'm not bitter and wish you all well in your lives, it's hard enough as it is. Thanks for your time.

Idontdowindows · 20/04/2018 09:29

Awwww, the women won't adapt their movement to suit a man and now he's not bitter at allllll.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/04/2018 09:31

Tsk tsk, OP, women offer you helpful suggestions and this is how you respond? The thread even has free advice about herbal solutions to digestive ailments!

TerranceandPhilip · 20/04/2018 09:34

'When all you have ever known is privilege, equality feels like oppression'.

The transphobia on here described in one neat sentence. I think it's beyond parody that feminists really don't see the similarities between themselves and MRA's

Idontdowindows · 20/04/2018 09:58

A phobia is an irrational fear.

It is not irrational for women to fear males in their spaces. We know what men can do.

Could you expand on this point I'm not quite sure I follow?

UpstartCrow · 20/04/2018 10:01

@cforte0 Report the 'appalling abuse' that dehumanises you to MN and they'll delete it.

Nah mate, we see you as a joke. Which is why women started talking about fennel tea.

All feminists? Or just women you don't like?

BertrandRussell · 20/04/2018 10:11

Cforte- if you give some details of the situation you’re in, people could give you practical thoughts . It’s hard to do that when you post in such vague terms.
