Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Is feminism inherently sexist? Anybody for human rights anymore?

Feminism appears to only ever advocate for women's rights alone, even when we mention gender equality it is immediately presumed that it's an issue where women are in need of support and empowerment.
Is that not inherently sexist, solely focusing on the rights of only a subset of our species, why are we not advocating for human rights anymore?
There are at least 6 separate organisations where I work that advocate for gender equality and/or diversity and/or women's rights, and every one of them is focused on women's rights. Where I work females out perform and out number men, I don't understand how I'm suppose to be at an advantage because I'm a man, and there's not a single group I can go to for support as none of those groups are willing to offer me any of their services.
I'm all for human rights and consider myself an individualist where people should be awarded things on merit, but even when trying to pose questions in what should be a critical thinking environment I get branded a sexist and a misogynist. Without anyone acknowledging and critiquing my ideas, I'm personally attacked and disregarded, is that because I'm a man?

I'm becoming quite the expert in the post-hysterectomy Mediterranean diet.

I do hope that isn't oppressing anyone.

peacheachpearplum · 20/04/2018 12:13

ReluctantCamper unfortunately the mother was his doormat so her getting the child benefit (family allowance at the time) didn't benefit the kids. They were always in trouble at school as no uniform, their idea of a treat when they were little was to get "lost" and taken to the police station where they would be given lemonade and biscuits. I remember being lost for words when they explained this to me.

peacheachpearplum · 20/04/2018 12:14

I do hope that isn't oppressing anyone. Oh no, have I been eating the wrong food for the last 15 years?

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 20/04/2018 12:15

fennel tea also works for water retention, but don't drink it after lunchtime otherwise you'll be up all night peeing.

MrsFogi · 20/04/2018 12:17

May I join your company? The women's network in my company is now the Gender network and has a male chair, more men than women on the committee and is currently spending most of its time working on an International Mens' Day event. I have left....

ReluctantCamper · 20/04/2018 12:19

MyVisionsComeFromSoup, I always have a little Grin when your user name pops up.

mine displays a distressing lack of originality, but I'm used to it now, I think I'd miss it and I don't think I can come up with anything better.

Idontdowindows · 20/04/2018 12:19

Liney as a post-hysterectomy woman I'm very much interested in the post-hysterectomy Mediterranean diet, do tell!

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 20/04/2018 12:22

why thank you ReluctantCamper Blush.

@MrsFogi that is absolutely hilarious.

Greymisty · 20/04/2018 12:40

Just checking the thread....it's moved on to much!

Most important questions...

Has anyone finished @Nkfell and mine's little rhino song?!

Did Bird like it?

Did our half finished tune assist the OP ?

I had not realised fennel tea was so good.

birdsdestiny · 20/04/2018 12:47

I loved it. Thanks for thinking of me and the rhinos.

AskBasil · 20/04/2018 12:54

this is why child benefit always went to the mother until Cameron and his cronies dismantled it.

It's also why charities which run projects and schemes in the developing world, always prefer to give money to schemes run by women: because the whole of the community is more likely to benefit if the money is controlled by women, than by men.

LineyHasntLeftTheBuilding · 20/04/2018 13:00

@idontdowindows It's nothing special. Just Mediterranean diet tweaked to include a bit more calcium, and which doesn't cost a bloody fortune (because I found that the medical condition which led up to the surgery, and the recovery period which I'm still in, have negatively affected my earning capacity).

Greymisty · 20/04/2018 13:03

bird your welcome but on another thread we have discovered duckphobia. No one has made a song yet or reccommended any type of tea for the situation.

Jaxhog · 20/04/2018 13:05

On that basis, standing up for the rights of ANY group is inherently prejudiced.

QuentinSummers · 20/04/2018 15:06

terrance many of us have battle scars from "debating" people like OP over many years. I personally can't be arsed any more. Nothing I say will change his mind about feminism and nothing he says will convince me that feminism isn't needed. A pointless waste of life and energy to argue.

However the fruit tea and donkey song makes it all worth reading.

UpstartCrow · 20/04/2018 15:38

Has anyone posted this yet?

womanformallyknownaswoman · 20/04/2018 16:16

tl;dr he blames his mother

KittyKlaws · 20/04/2018 16:18

Upstart I saw that one on Reddit Smile

womanformallyknownaswoman · 20/04/2018 16:19

re salmon sandwiches: I recall talking to a Jewish woman who told me her family often didn't have enough food for all growing up (in USA) - so her parents gave the food to the kids and went without themselves. That's when I knew my family system and the misogynistic culture that supported it was corrupted

Thank you, because halfway through the initial post I gave up and flicked to the end to see how it had derailed - Mediterranean diets and tea I see.

Mandatorymongoose · 20/04/2018 16:38

It's not funny. I work in a female dominated industry and yet men are much more likely to be promoted.

They are likely to gain leadership positions more quickly.

Where I work I would estimate 80% of the staff are female but our senior management team is entirely male.

Good job feminists have got nothing left to sort and we can get back to baking cakes and raising the children and earning the money because otherwise it's not fair

Idontdowindows · 20/04/2018 17:01

Thanks Lyne I'll have a look at it :)

That's when I knew my family system and the misogynistic culture that supported it was corrupted My dad was more like that, although he worked two jobs to make sure there was enough. I suppose it does get complicated if you are so poor that the breadwinner would become so malnourished that they couldn't work. That wouldn't help anyone.

I remember my mum getting upset, she was talking about how poor they were in the 1920/1930s and my granny cooking a meal for the family, she was a wonderful cook. She would then sit down with a slice of bread and butter and say she didn't want a meal. My mum didn't realise till she was older that there wasn't enough food for everyone. My poor granny, she buried 3 children and was married to a womaniser. She had a hard life, when people used to say, "Hard work never killed anyone." she used to say. "It never did them much good either." She worked herself to death, still working and trying to make ends meet in her 70s.
