Just wanted to see who is going to this, and let Mumsnetters know it is happening if you didn't already. It's going to be a great meeting I think - with a choir singing too!

I think you will find that was 'We need to Talk' but I agree with the sentiment. I am sure WPUK will find a way.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/04/2018 16:13

Absolutely disgusted by the pusillanimous and downright libellous tweet from Mercure.

Who would have believed that in 2018 it would be necessary to take steps like this for a group of women to be able to meet for the totally lawful purpose of discussing a proposed change in the law which would affect their position?

These are the stated aims of Women's Place UK:

  1. Respectful and evidence based discussion about the impact of the proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act to be allowed to take place and for women’s voices to be heard;
  1. The principle of women only spaces to be upheld – and where necessary extended.
  1. A review of how the exemptions in the Equality Act which allow for single sex services or requirements that only a woman can apply for a job (such as in a domestic violence refuge) are being applied in practice;
  1. Government to consult with women’s organisations on how self-declaration would impact on women only services and spaces;
  1. Government to consult on how self-declaration will impact upon data gathering – such as crime, employment, pay, and health statistics – and monitoring of sex-based discrimination such as the gender pay gap.

How anyone can say this is bigoted is beyond me.

Melamin · 12/04/2018 16:21

And their twitter feed is totally dignified and proper. All they ever do is to ask for respectful discussion on the proposed changes and say thank you.

No twitter spats.

FeministBadger · 12/04/2018 16:27

Ah, it's obvious Gasp0de - they're taking their cues from the rules of misogyny by which we can clearly see that WPUK are nasty, horrible bigots.

2nd rule of misogyny: Women saying no to men is a hate crime.
3rd rule of misogyny: Women speaking for themselves are exclusionary and selfish.
4th rule of misogyny: Women's opinions are violence against men, thus male violence against women is justified.
8th rule of misogyny: Men are whatever men say they are and women are whatever men say they are.
9th rule of misogyny: Men always know the "real reasons" for everything women do and say.

I'm in the area now. Looks quiet.

CisMyArse · 12/04/2018 17:08

Ridiculous they’ve had to move. It’s on WalesOnline now although the comments are supportive of A Woman’s Place. I have a ticket and want to go however I work for the civil service and am worried about being spotted should anyone turn up and take photos. It’s even more ridiculous that I should have to worry than the hotel cancelling but I have to be so careful about engaging in political issues due to my job I don’t think I can risk going Sad I feel really shit about this, wish I could be braver

RoxytheRexy · 12/04/2018 17:22

Just confirming what was said further upthread. WPUK is going ahead in a fab new venue. Choir and all

Meet at the original venue to be taken to the new one. Looking forward to it. And to meeting you all

yetanothertranswoman · 12/04/2018 17:22

Looks like they have deleted that tweet from the hotel.

I was just about to reply to it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/04/2018 17:30

I think there were two tweets from the hotel and one is still there. I'm pleased to see that their previous tweet has a picture of a hen party and there are a lot of acerbic comments below it saying 'Oh so some all women's gatherings are all right, then?' and the like.

MimbleCat · 12/04/2018 17:35

A lawyer on twitter has pointed that out to them

OvaHere · 12/04/2018 17:37

What did the hotel tweet say?

AnitaLovesVictor · 12/04/2018 17:43

So pleased they've got a new venue. Grin

If you'd have told me 5 years ago that women's politics, rights and free speech would be under such attack today, I'd have thought you were mad. And yet here we are.

Absolute full admiration and respect for A Woman's Place - they've got ovaries of steel.

BingBongSong · 12/04/2018 17:48

There is an article in Wales Online.

Melamin · 12/04/2018 17:51

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 12/04/2018 18:01

Yeah I don’t think I’m quite that fabulous, although looking glam would mean I’m far less likely to be recognised Grin

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 12/04/2018 18:02

Am in town. Just eating a quick dinner.

AnitaLovesVictor · 12/04/2018 18:04

I always rather liked the headscarf and sunglasses look. V glam.

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 12/04/2018 18:07

So it turns out that the hotel group that doesn't let women meet also underpays them, nice

R0wantrees · 12/04/2018 18:16

Wales Online would do well to see what has come out of the twitter account that they published. The response to the hotel may seem very calm and reasonable but the account is a replacement for one shut down for beaching Twitter guidelines and even in it's short life has been pretty focussed in targeting women and those individuals who are transgender and have challenged some TRAs...
