I've been organising free clothes swaps in south east London since 2013. Attended mainly, but not exclusively, by women and their children, they are fun events that save money and the environment and strengthen and enrich the community.

The Birds Nest thebirdsnestpub.com/ have hosted many of our swaps in their back room. I am also a regular customer at the pub.

I had planned an event there next Friday 6th April. However, a local transactivist came on to the event page a few days ago and threatened to disrupt it (see attached screenshot).

I asked the managers to have a word with this man (also a regular customer) and to ban him from the event to ensure our safety. However, their response was to immediately cancel our event and to take no action on the man.

I'm extremely upset on a personal level but also furious that men can make violent threats against women, specifically in front of their children, yet simultaneously claim victim status.

This is how transactivism works

With regards to you Venice, this reminds me very much of the Andi Dier attack on Rose McGowan when she was talking about her rape in public. It doesn't matter what the event is or how shitty it would be to you and others to disrupt it, its justifiable because of things you've said.

ellaoldie · 02/04/2018 10:24

This is appalling.
I think Venice should raise this with her MP as well.

Fixed that for ya! Wink

Ereshkigal · 02/04/2018 11:53

I meant it was justifiable in their eyes. I think it was fairly clear.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 02/04/2018 11:59

@Ereshkigal. Yes. To them it's justifiable, to us it's unforgivable.

I got you.

JessicaJonesJacket · 02/04/2018 12:45

ffs this is ridiculous. Shame on the pub for capitulating rather than passing it to the police and banning the person threatening violence. Men prioritising entitled men over everything and everyone else yet again.

Ereshkigal · 02/04/2018 12:47

Exactly and TRAs will keep doing it because it's an extraordinarily effective tactic to silence women.

This is really depressing to see. Venice, I understand why you’ve decided to cancel the swap but if you change your mind please update - I am local and would like to come and support you.

Also this debacle reminded me of sisters uncut. A friend was heavily involved in the organisation when it first started and I remember having a conversation with her about their policy on trans people. Originally it seemed that the members were keen to keep it a female only space considering that a lot of them were victims of domestic abuse. It’s so sad to see that their cause has been totally taken over and dominated by trans activists, what a waste!

Ereshkigal · 03/04/2018 10:09

I find it so sad that women are frequently shut out of their female centred organisations and groups by males and their allies, either directly or indirectly. I know so many occasions where this has happened.

DoroVallens · 03/04/2018 10:33

Fuck me, unbelievable!

This board opened my eyes to reality. WTF!!!!!

Please go to the police if you can. Easter Sad

BreakWindandFire · 03/04/2018 12:03

Reading the Facebook thread, one positive outcome is that it's 'peak transed' a huge amount of local residents who wouldn't normally confront this issue. Especially as Andi and his handmaiden abuse anyone who tries to engage them respectfully. They come across as sinister and aggressive loons.

TerfsUp · 03/04/2018 12:42

Good. The more people who are peak transed, the better.

I never got a reply the email I sent to the pub. Disgraceful.
