I've been organising free clothes swaps in south east London since 2013. Attended mainly, but not exclusively, by women and their children, they are fun events that save money and the environment and strengthen and enrich the community.

The Birds Nest thebirdsnestpub.com/ have hosted many of our swaps in their back room. I am also a regular customer at the pub.

I had planned an event there next Friday 6th April. However, a local transactivist came on to the event page a few days ago and threatened to disrupt it (see attached screenshot).

I asked the managers to have a word with this man (also a regular customer) and to ban him from the event to ensure our safety. However, their response was to immediately cancel our event and to take no action on the man.

I'm extremely upset on a personal level but also furious that men can make violent threats against women, specifically in front of their children, yet simultaneously claim victim status.

This is how transactivism works

Is pus his name or a description?

DaisyDrip · 01/04/2018 16:00

So now people struggling to clothe themselves or their children are being targeted by TRA simply because of who organised the event? Shocking!

With you all the way DrRadfem.

Kneedeepinunicorns · 01/04/2018 16:08

Argh Dr I'm so sorry. This kind of swap makes a huge difference to families, especially the ones living in poverty, it's wicked to take that opportunity away. But I understand in Deptford, the homeless, addicted and desperate have been requested to move over and make way too, so unsurprising children in poverty can either witness violence or get stuffed.

I'm very glad you have gone to the police and I admire your sense. I'd have been so tempted to hold the event anyway and either prove these threats are empty intimidation, or make sure it was captured on camera as these individuals kicked off in front of children at a community supporting event. That should make the national news and peak trans the UK overnight.

picklemepopcorn · 01/04/2018 16:28

Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.

gingergenius · 01/04/2018 17:41

I've read all the comments there @DrRadFem and I'm horrified at the viciousness of their tirades. Interesting that Liv refers to Andi as he/man. So what the fuck is that all about? Does that not somewhat blow their ideology out of the water?

Is there anything we can do, Venice?

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 01/04/2018 18:10

It’s a shame the press don’t pick up this kind of stuff. Threats of violence toward women and children at a community event.
Staggering really.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 01/04/2018 18:18

Very glad you've taken this to the police but so so sorry that this has happened Flowers

Clothes swap ffs a clothes swap

If violence had been incited, why hasn't LM gone to the police?

This is such utter bollocks.

OvaHere · 01/04/2018 19:45

Imagine if all people who had differing opinions weren't allowed in Parliament at the same time.

PM questions would be a bit one sided.

In fact taking it to it's logical conclusion every single MP would have to be allocated their own day of the year to enter the building. Grin

LapdanceShoeshine · 01/04/2018 20:06

saw people who had incited violence against me personally/the wider trans community

What utter bollocks

TheGoldenBough · 01/04/2018 20:19

If violence had been incited, why hasn't LM gone to the police?

Absolutely. I'm sure the police would have been very keen to hear of the violence that was incited against LM personally and the wider trans community.

I believe the police take literal violence very seriously...

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 01/04/2018 21:25

Sorry this happened

untoldstories · 01/04/2018 21:29

Why on Earth would he have been at Parliament that night?
He's a women's officer for his CLP, an unpaid role.
I did hear he'd been seen hanging around outside the event afterwards though probably looking for the ruck that never happened.

AreYouTerfEnough · 01/04/2018 21:36

Looking at someone the wrong way = literal violence in The Land Of The Speshul Snowflakes

I wonder if they use caster sugar on their cornflakes because granulated might hurt their little gums 🤔

untoldstories · 01/04/2018 21:44

Bless him, trying to make out he's dead important and has to engage fully in politics! Grin
What a wanker.

LizzieSiddal · 01/04/2018 22:31

I was at Parliament on the same night as this event and saw people who had incited violence against me personally/the wider trans community. Not okay. I should be able to engage fully in politics without having to be in the same space as Transphobes

So before LM saw the “transphobes”, they assumed that every other person in Parliament, agreed with them? Hmm

How very odd.

Datun · 01/04/2018 22:49

Lily is talking about Linda Bellos. Referencing the violence at speakers corner, she said something like let them try that with me I'll give them what for.

Which they then gleefully took out of context as inciting violence.

I sat next to her and we had a long conversation about it.

Lily was recognised by some women as they wandering along the road. If they were there for any reason other than nosiness and loitering trying to get an angle they would be saying so.

thebewilderness · 01/04/2018 22:53

These traditional methods men use to terrorize women are so commonplace that they are not even recognized by most people for what they are.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 02/04/2018 03:19

same tactics different guises - intimate relationships, work, politics, charities, human rights, legal / education/ welfare / health / sport / police systems - in fact anywhere there's men……

As always find out who benefits - follow the money and follow the power - i.e. who wants more income, who wants to dominate, who wants revenge, and sometimes who wants to increase their sadistic and sexual pleasure, - i.e. what's their motivation plus who has the resources to terrorise? Who's their targets? Usually women and children, or others, in a vulnerable state.

Ugh - I wish I didn't see this stuff sometimes - I don't really as I need to be able to see it - however it's so hard to bear the truth and not despair - the system is rigged but collectively we can challenge it. We need to organise more...

Could hit the Gin but won't...

PencilsInSpace · 02/04/2018 09:57

This is so fucking awful. How dare they Angry I'm sorry you're going through this Venice, how did it go with the police?

Ereshkigal · 02/04/2018 10:17

Madigan felt very violated that we took our literal violence to parliament while Madigan was there. Which Madigan was, apparently, at the same time.

Yes, that's true. Madigan was there. As if that was a coincidence.

Ereshkigal · 02/04/2018 10:20

Madigan was inside, there was a picture posted. www.facebook.com/iamlils/posts/1488532634607854
