...please could I ask exactly what was your lightbulb moment? What did you hear or read that pushed you to our alpine slopes?

@CallYourDadYoureInACult yep my DH warned me that I was slightly coming across as frantic and a bit tin-foil hat when discussing it!

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 10/02/2018 01:56

Cheeky, that's one of the most worrying aspects of all this, most people haven't got a clue what's happening.

It's not getting the coverage it should, but there have been articles in the main stream media.
I think people cruise past it, thinking it doesn't affect them.

I talk to friends and family who are reasonably well educated and informed, and none of them have heard of any of this and look at me like I'm losing it when I tell them.

Sorry, a bit off topic.
I'm multiple peaking nearly every day Grin

Maybe we should have another thread about who have we peaked?

Cheekyandfreaky · 10/02/2018 02:12

@BewitchedBotheredandBewildered it’s true, I sometimes feel like I’m going mad because no one I know (aside from DH) knows or cares what’s going on. It feels like everyday we are sleeping and this movement is winning. Fucking terrifying.

IWearPurple · 10/02/2018 04:35

I have human biology qualifications so I have never believed that men can become women, or boys can become girls. It is not scientifically possible.

I'd always viewed trans as transsexuals who were gender dysphoric, but who clearly weren't women, and didn't pretend to be.

PZ Myers, and his commenters, peak transed me.

Destinysdaughter · 10/02/2018 07:46

This thread on Twitter shows v clearly how much hate they have for us:

I've just been told to "piss off TERF" on FB for saying trans men are women. I feel so proud! GrinWink

They're creating their own noose. I like what Peter King said.

Ive been watching trans issue for years now and I can honestly say I've never seen a tweet from a feminist threatening violence. It's v common for transactivists to do this.

Destinysdaughter · 10/02/2018 11:17

In the last week I got called a TERF troll from a TIM when I objected to women being referred to as 'cis' and last night I was told by a woman that 'a real feminist isn't a transphobe' for objecting to Lily Madigan taking a position that should have gone to a woman and for attacking other women since. No debate, just silencing...

Agerbilatemycardigan · 10/02/2018 11:21

Lots of activity on Twitter about this.

Caucho · 10/02/2018 11:35

I don’t think being a man is important but always prefix my comments so as to be honest. This whole issue is insane! It doesn’t affect me anywhere nearly as badly as women but it still pisses me off. I do care about women.

I expected such nonesense from far left groups and an Islington led Labour Party but even the Tories are spouting this. The ‘evil racist homophobic’ Tories. I’m afraid the game is up when the Conservative Party is pushing such Nonsense and are being criticised by the Labour Party for not going far enough

CoolCarrie · 10/02/2018 11:41

For me it was that poor woman being assaulted at speakers corner, plus the vile treatment of Rose McGowan had at her book launch.
Add to that knowledge that many MTF keep their male genitalia has definitely peaked me, and thensome!

OvaHere · 10/02/2018 11:44

Caucho the Conservatives have shown signs of backing off slightly since this time last year.

I suspect this is a few things, the realisation, now the issue is getting more spotlight, it's largely not going to wash with their voter base. Secondly, they have a coalition with the DUP which is need to maintain their mandate to govern and thirdly Brexit is enough of a headache as it is.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 10/02/2018 12:26

I started questioning things when I was going to Libfem subreddits and posters were posting conflicting views on threads, without realising it. They were just saying the things which sounded the most progressive. So it made me realise that I perhaps needed to look at views from all sides, then Rachel Dolezal and quite rightly people were calling her out on her bullshit, but I noticed she was struggling with her mental health and self identity just like some Trans people. The Libfems were being hostile to Rachel and her mindset but not the same to sometimes quite rude people who happened to be transgender.

I would have arguments with myself and just resorted to people should be able to live their lives the way they want as long as it affects no one else and that I should just forget it. Then just before the Rose Mcgowan incident happened there was a Transwoman with a penis in prison who had been convicted of burgling a house and masturbating with girls underwear, I recognised that this person probably had paraphelia and was completely a risk to be housed with female inmates. This person was a sexual deviant but I went onto reddit and was arguing that there needs to be a middle ground because one persons desires should not come before the safeguarding of female prisoners. Of course you had people, “liberal” men mostly, refusing to accept the middle ground and it made me realise that there is no middle ground for some people.

Then the Rose McGowan incident happened, and looking at the views online and from media sources was just batshit insane and she was being called a transphobic because she pointed out the basic fact that a woman’s and a Transwomans life experiences were not the same and she doesn’t want to be identified as Cis. It made me realise that everyone has gone completely insane and I peaked.

IfNot · 10/02/2018 15:23

My DP thinks I have gone nuts..he just gives me the side eye when I tell him YET ANOTHER thing that is giving me the rage (Hampstead Ponds is the latest). He just thinks, well how many transexxuals are there, really? Its a non-issue.
He just doesn't believe me, or he thinks I have got the wrong end of the stick.(And because it won't affect him, and because I am a fiery battleaxe and he thinks I don't need protection he is not interested to find out more.)
Gah!
I did have a conversation with a close female friend about it recently though. She works in the public sector, so has to be circumspect, but she has definitely been on here, and she was on side (Thank God).
Her husband said "I don't know why you are both being so mean about trans people"..so we told him, until he begged for mercy Grin

StarsAndWater · 10/02/2018 17:02

Also Rose McGowan for me.
It was seeing a rape survivor get heckled on stage while she was talking about her assault.
And then seeing how the media reported it. Same with her timeline. The abuse aimed at her wasn't just a couple of trolls, it was almost all the tweets about her.
She lost her temper with someone who aggressively harassed her and was almost uniformly portrayed as being in the wrong, transphobic and mentally unstable.
And even when Andi Dier was shown to be a sexual predator, people were still saying Rose was in the wrong.
It was very, very obvious that the rape and sexual assault of women and young girls just wasn't a big deal for them.

The cherry on top was finding out that the reason Rose was branded transphobic was for daring to say that girls grow breasts and get periods during puberty and transwomen don't.

That was the start. Now I've fallen down a fucking rabbit hole.

NotTerfNorCis · 10/02/2018 18:00

Peaktrans is definitely accelerating. I used to read a Reddit board called Peak Trans VI. Two months ago it was getting a new peaktranser every day or two. I just checked again. Seems it has 2 or 3 new people a day now. The Rose McGowan thing tipped a lot of people over.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 10/02/2018 18:16

I think it was because the reporting of the incident made out that it was Rose ranting at a Transgender person and being Transphobic then you watch the video and it’s so clearly not. Then you find out the reason that Andi was there was because of Rose pointing out the obvious that Women and Transwomen have different life experiences, and then to top it off Andi is quite a disturbing individual and an abuser. Yet people and supporters of Andi acted like Andi was in the right and Andi shouldn’t be judged for her shitty horrible behaviour but Rose who only pointed an obvious fact should be raked through the hot coals.

I think most people didn’t realise that this is the mindset of that the TRA community. The TRA supporters of Andi should have been smart and chucked that predator under the bus and try and separate themselves from Andi.

ChattyLion · 10/02/2018 18:26

HeyRoly
Just read only the first of those Guardian articles you linked to. What a load of fucking irresponsible, insulting to women, complacent shit. And these writers call themselves feminists? I am horrified. I want to pick it apart on here but honestly it’s too depressing to read it again. Sad The Guardian has become its own idiotic echo chamber.

Pippa Bunce. As a fee earner working in financial services, the sector with the worst gender pay gap, I now have to not only wonder if the guys are being paid more for the same job, but also toe the line and openly celebrate someone bringing their sexual fetish into the work place, and proclaim a part time transsexual as an “inspirational business woman”! You can’t make this stuff up.

NotAWhacktivist · 10/02/2018 20:36

I had forgotten some of these gems. I only became aware of this issue just over a year or so ago, through reading mumsnet.

I started off thinking it was great that a Caitlin Jenner won woman of the year, as I thought this would help transsexual people. I thought people were being transphobic here initially Blush but then I read more and realised they actually were making some valid points that were based on rational concerns.

I was shocked to realise that transgender was a much broader category than transexual of old, and that most of them would not have genital surgery, and did not have gender dysphoria as I understood it. When I heard about self-identification in law I thought it was madness.

It took me a few months of reading on here, and reading articles people linked to, and looking at You Tube videos such as Magdalen Berns, to really hit peak trans. Now I feel I hit it again and again as every day seems to bring forth some new idiocy to challenge.

Undercoverswede · 10/02/2018 21:05

Like most here, I instinctively felt a ‘welcome to sisterhood’ thing with trans women. Never had even a glimmer of worry. Genuinely naive about the whole terf thing. But then came the US women’s march, when women were accused of being trans exclusive for carrying placards about protecting their reproductive rights, followed by people attaching a columnist writing earnestly about rape for being trans exclusive as there was an implication that male genitals violated female ones. That was my wtf moment. Reading a little more, I can certainly see the minefield. Some sharp and articulate trans women write superbly about it, so there should be latitude for intelligent debate. And there seems to be, as some suggest, a possibility that the trans right movement is hijacked by men with dodgy fetishes who have entirely different ideas of what ‘joining the sisterhood’ might be. Either way, I still fully support those who genuinely want to transition, but the whole self-ID things seems open to abuse... And, obviously, hands off hard-gained progress on reproductive rights and discussions that address the very real issues associated with sex-based abuse and violence. That’s a hill I’d be willing to die on.

seafoodeatit · 10/02/2018 21:15

I'm not sure if it counts as recent but the changes to Olympic rules on athletes competing as women did it for me.

NameyChangeyObviously · 10/02/2018 23:36

As per the name, not saying this publicly

In common with lots and lots of other women, was pressured into sex when I was over the age of consent but not by much. As in - wasn't expecting it, was only expecting him to stay over when he missed the train, then when it became apparent that's what he wanted and I said 'no' and he slapped my bum and said 'we're here now so we may as well.' I'd already said no, I knew I didn't want to, but I did the split-second decision between maintaining the no versus being attacked and went with submission. Thought nothing more of it, beyond blaming myself for "getting myself into a situation," for a decade.

Many years later he lives a very long away and messages me to say that I should know that "what happened between us before was now ok" because now he's a lesbian too. I'd not realised before that he had known perfectly well that he coerced me.

Fuck off fuck off fuck off fuck off. He lost his right to call himself a woman when he coerced me into sex. Nothing like that to help you to a peak.

HeyRoly · 10/02/2018 23:43

Oh my god namey, I'm so sorry that happened to you. And I can't believe he had the GALL to message you and say he's not a rapist because he's now a lesbian. Fuck him and the boat he sailed in on.
