i never post here but I'm watching Germaine Greer on newsnight
Crazy, the woman is not allowed to discuss feminist issues without being forced to discuss transgender issues
Disclaimer- I really like GG
Am I reading this correctly? Why does she have to fight for a different groups issues

Everyone is for freedom of speech until people start saying things they disagree with.

IamTheWhoreofBabylon · 24/10/2015 13:34

How can she be accused of inciting violence?
Correct me if I'm wrong but I assume violence towards MTF trams is largely carried out my men
GG speaks to women
It does baffle me as to why vocal trans want to redefine what it means to be a woman rather than to redefine what it means to be a man

Fuck it! Fuck it! And I don't care if this gets me banned.

Germaine Greer is brilliant!

And one more for good luck. Fuck it!

Elendon · 24/10/2015 13:39

Ego TBF - it was not the University. The petition was started by the Women's officer. I think that should raise questions itself.

I agree. It shows how much women are closed down in speaking and listening to other views.

Elendon · 24/10/2015 13:47

But the article you linked to Ego is disingenuous, to say the least. Germaine Greer has not issued a fatwa, nor has she incited violence, she merely speaks her mind in that no one can turn into the opposite sex.

I loved that she said if a woman ran down the street nude with saggy breasts she would have a blanket thrown over her. Yes, because she doesn't fit in with what it is deemed to be a woman.

Also, that Caitlin Jenner was jealous! Spot on!

Right, rant over.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 24/10/2015 13:57

GG has stated that she is not interested in trans womens issues, she does not care she wants to discuss women issues this has always been her stance yet over and over again she is asked about it how clear can she make it

she does not accept trans women as women, she will call a trans woman she but sees herself as being a woman a trans woman is a trans woman why should she have to defend herself over and over again

and by doing this it shuts down once again the subject of women she is having to discuss trans women

Varya · 24/10/2015 13:59

GG is great!

BlackbirdsInaPie · 24/10/2015 14:03

Brava!

I think a lot of this is about a really rigid model of masculinity, paired with homophobia.

QueenLaBeefah · 24/10/2015 14:05

Love Germaine Greer.

Nail. Hit squarely on the head.

I work in childcare. There has recently been a big push for more 'risk' for the children. Instead of banning all activities that have the slightest element of risk in them we are now encouraged to let the children take controlled risks. If a child wanted to put 2 blocks on top of one another and stand on them in the old days they would probably have been told that it was too risky to try. Now we would ask them what would happen if they fell off, and suggest they do it on the safety surface, and check for wobbliness.
It's all about giving them the skills to cope on their own in their future life. It's seen as bad for a child's future to be sheltered/wrapped up in cotton wool and to have never have needed self risk assessment.
I see similar problem with universities no-platforming speakers that show elements of 'wrong' views. If the job of university is to produce knowledgeable, useful and well rounded people, they're not going to do it be keeping their students in a pastel coloured Disney environment where disagreement with the university's ideals are not permitted.
Universities should allow challenging opinions to be expressed. Maybe it could be done in a sensitive way: in a hall outside the university campus, counsellors on standby or whatever, but they shouldn't non-platform anybody. Wrapping their students up in cotton wool will not help them.

"It does baffle me as to why vocal trans want to redefine what it means to be a woman rather than to redefine what it means to be a man"

FWIW
www.skirtcafe.org
Men who wear skirts, dresses, kaftans etc.

  • as men (no surgery involved)
(I know there is more to redefining what it means to be a man than what one wears, so posting FWIW)
howtorebuild · 24/10/2015 14:49

All the while we discuss Caitlyn Jenner, energy is taken from other topics.

HermioneWeasley · 24/10/2015 15:02

Yes more silencing and erasure of women

Let's have a think about who benefits when uppity feminists are silenced....

Ubik1 · 24/10/2015 15:12

Comparing the banning of GG with banning hate preachers is beyond ridiculous

Greer is one of the big names of classic 70's feminism.
You'd think that people/feminist women would be really excited to have her talk at their University. I would!
What a huge stupid anti-feminist backlash this is. Make sure younger women do not listen to the older ones, eh?

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 24/10/2015 16:01

What is a Woman, their body or their mind. I don't agree with her regarding Transgender, how insulting.

I totally agree with her.

A man in a dress is still a man, if you have a penis you're a man, a man who has his genitals surgically removed is not a woman.

Ubik1 · 24/10/2015 16:08

Also she was invited - it's not like she's barging into transwomens meetings shouting the odds.

People ask her opinion, she tells them.

Mide7 · 24/10/2015 16:14

I agree that it's a fundamental right Slug but when you can be arrested for saying things, how's that free?

In this example, GG has voiced an opinion and now someone is trying to silence her because of that opinion. That doesn't strike me as free either.
