i never post here but I'm watching Germaine Greer on newsnight
Crazy, the woman is not allowed to discuss feminist issues without being forced to discuss transgender issues
Disclaimer- I really like GG
Am I reading this correctly? Why does she have to fight for a different groups issues

OP posts:

Kate Smurthwaite wasn't no platformed for views on abortion!

Ubik1 · 24/10/2015 16:55

I don't think GG is being 'silenced' exactly.
She is expressing an opinion which no doubt will lead her to a flaming online for voicing a heresy.

But she can still gave her views and voice them. And I am sure she will continue to do so.

It's not like being decapitated then crucified fur joining a protest or behind chucked off a building for being gay.

whatdoIget · 24/10/2015 17:00

Kate smurthwaite was no platformed because of her views on prostitution wasn't she?? Ie. That she thought punters should be criminilsed for buying sex from prostitued women? Or have I remembered that wrongly?

almondpudding · 24/10/2015 17:00

I think I would describe those things as murder rather than silencing.

Why are you asking? What do you think about it?

whatdoIget · 24/10/2015 17:05

Do you think it was the right thing to do, Ego

Then I disagree. The NUS no platform list includes terrorist organisations.

HedgehogAtHome · 24/10/2015 17:11

It does seem ironic that it is feminists who no platformed those speakers, a feminist who started the petition about Germaine Greer and feminists who think that she should not be allowed to speak.

Feminists not a homogeneous group shocker. Hardly ironic. Some women are scared to show support for an unpopular view point, some aren't.

I agree. It shows how much women are closed down in speaking and listening to other views.

^This.

whatdoIget · 24/10/2015 17:13

It doesn't seem to be very counterproductive in this case, because once again we're talking about trans issues instead of feminist topics, which is presumably what the no platformers want

Ubik1 · 24/10/2015 17:15

When I was a journalist we 'no platformed' the BNP. Until they were elected as local councillors - then we couldn't.

But deciding your newspaper was not going to be used to promote ultra right wing views that harm many, by people who are basically criminal pond life is different to no platforming someone like GG, and even fucking George Galloway and the pro lifers.

In the same way that Islamic radicals/ fundamentalists are different too. They should be no platformed. Their rhetoric feeds in to real life conflicts where people are murdered, raped, maimed and tortured.
Thst is very different situation to the identity politics circus which consumes so much time and energy these days.

Ubik1 · 24/10/2015 17:17

and yes

Men should be criminalised for buying sex. Absolutely they should.

I'm a feminist because I heard Germaine speak way back in the 60s. Everything clicked into place. I was lucky enough to meet her and chat with her several times and my admiration for her and gratitude to her remains.

I haven't always agreed with everything she's said and written but am disgusted at attempts to silence her. I was in the 60s and I am now. It's misogyny - it was then and it is now.

She will stand tall in the history of women's rights when those whiners who criticise her are long forgotten.

Germaine rocks.

almondpudding · 24/10/2015 17:22

UBIK just made her position clear. Did you not see that?
Why are you asking the same question?

almondpudding · 24/10/2015 17:24

Mythical, I agree that she has been and continues to be hugely inspirational.
