Tulisa - wonderful role model

Tulisa is feminism's new hero

I think she's been incredibly brave this week. I can only imagine how mortifying and sickening it must be to think that someone you trusted has put intimate footage of you into the public domain. Full credit to her for refusing to be shamed by this. It's probably too much to hope that he's the one feeling ashamed, but he flipping well should be Angry

Not sure about role model but if it stops idiot girls 'agreeing' to be filmed then go her.

molly3478 · 24/03/2012 18:22

She blatantly did it on purpose. Her new video is out this week about how we all make mistakes when were young and its just part of growing up. Bit of a coincindence isnt it? It will help her career and she knows it because of the publicity.

Lottapianos · 24/03/2012 18:25

You don't know that for sure molly3478 but even if it is true, I think it sends a really positive message to other (especially young) women that being sexually active is nothing to be ashamed of.

At first I thought it was very gutsy of her to make the second video, where she admits it's her in the first video. But then I suspect the entire thing was a publicity stunt. Either way I do not see her as any sort of role model. When I think of role models I'm thinking of the likes of Maya Angelou or Michelle Obama or even JK Rowling.

Nyac · 24/03/2012 19:09

She's really missing the point that making public pornography of a woman is a good way to show women enjoying sex. It's about humiliation and invasion of privacy. Any man that does this will know what he's doing to his partner.

Given the amount of pornography and sexualisation in the media that exists now, it's pretty difficult to argue that women are portrayed as not enjoying sex. It's pretty much every young woman's duty to be ensuring her own fair share of orgasms.

KarmaK · 24/03/2012 19:12

Tulisa consented to being filmed sucking that guy? So why did she release a statement saying the tape was fabricated, that she was shocked and that she's never allowed herself to be filmed performing sex acts? And how does any of this make her a role model or hero?? Confused

Patienceobtainsallthings · 24/03/2012 19:14

But surely" dealing with it with dignity and grace "helps her to reclaim some power .It takes guts to do what she did .I respect her for that .Articles like in the link also publicise how easy it is nowadays for ANYONE to be exploited by a film recording .Vulnerable people "in love "will trust their lover ,it is all ABUSE but everyone in life makes their own choices and ultimately better self esteem is the only power we have to make better choices but the desire to be loved and the thrill of being in love can make people become manipulated ,no doubt about it.

KarmaK · 24/03/2012 19:18

We should only agree to be filmed doing/saying things we'd be happy for our grandparents and/or our children to see. Because you really never know where these recordings might end up.

Nyac · 24/03/2012 19:18

The article just makes it seem like a fact of life that these little scumbags are making covert porn films of women:

"Today, sex tapes (sex MP4s? Sex mov.files?) can be filmed covertly and lurk on many boys' iPhones"

Which if it isn't illegal (I think it is) should be, and the bland acceptance that boys will do this needs to be challenged. It's sickening that men and boys do stuff like this to women.

Patienceobtainsallthings · 24/03/2012 19:23

I agree Nyac ,my point is it publicises that it has become a fact of life .I think we are niave to think it hasnt .I hope I am wrong I hope boys arent asking their young girlfriends to photograph themselves and send them photos or make videos.I think it is probably common practice to be asked at some point in a relationship even if both people choose not to .I think the technology is there & I think vulnerable people are there .

Patienceobtainsallthings · 24/03/2012 19:29

I bet many boys will say "ur uptight" if u dont allow a few photos or "If you loved me you would let me film you " Its just a different variation the same old line .Id say this is at epidemic levels already .Then used as blackmail against the girls to manipulate them and accept allsorts of abusive behaviour .

skrumle · 24/03/2012 19:32

what SGM said!

i know there's a whole conspiracy-theory going around that it's a publicity stunt but i don't believe that. i feel really sorry for her, but i'm glad she did the youtube video and put the blame onto her ex - where it belongs. she did nothing wrong whereas he's an arse...

Nyac · 24/03/2012 19:48

It's not about vulnerable people though Patience. Tulisa isn't vulnerable, she seems like a pretty tough young woman. It's the fact that there are predatory voyeuristic men and boys who think nothing of violating their girlfriends' or sexual partners' privacy and sexuality. It's not a fact of life, it's a choice that men and boys make. Tulisa has been getting called names for this and the focus has been on her. We need to look at the boys and their iPhones.

Nyac · 24/03/2012 19:49

When this happened to Paris Hilton she went into a shop where the tape was being sold and caused a scene about it. She was obviously very hurt by the whole thing, which of course is what these events are designed for.

BasilFoulTea · 24/03/2012 20:31

I hope the police prosecute the guy who uploaded the tape.

Bet they won't though.

Lottapianos · 24/03/2012 20:33

Like many others on here, I have been sickened by the sniggering and rubbing-hands-with-glee that occur whenever a sex tape is leaked featuring a well-known woman. The 'silly slag should have known better' attitude is utterly foul, places all the blame on the woman and normalises the idea that men are not to be trusted and always take sex and consent less seriously than women. So I respect Tulisa for refusing to take all that abuse, and for putting the blame back squarely where it should lie - on the shoulders of whoever leaked that tape.

Hoebag · 24/03/2012 20:51

I don't think it makes her a hero, and t bh there is a small part of me who wonders how 'accidental' this was.
Look at paris hilton her entire fame was based that tape tbh.
I dont think anybody thinks theres anything wrong with sexually active usually quite the opposite these days, IME. So I dont think shes achieving anything their tbh.

Patienceobtainsallthings · 24/03/2012 21:08

Nyac ,I think it does show how vulnerable people can be and how trusting they can be of their partners.
You can be strong and still vulnerable ,especially when it comes to being in love.
I dont know the statistics but Im willing to bet a lot of young women's partners have asked to take naked pictures of them on their phones and that is what I refer to as a fact of life or regular occurance but hey maybe its not .I think Tulisa had guts to try and take back some power from her abuser.

catsareevil · 24/03/2012 21:15

I know that posting links to the daily mail is frowned on here, but this article does make some interesting points:
daily mail

I'm aother one who sees this as a publicity stunt.

KarmaK · 24/03/2012 21:18

She's clearly very manipulative. She makes a sex tape of her own free will. Lies profusely about it. And then releases a self-serving video and manages to get people to believe she is now some kind of hero. Hilarious.

BasilFoulTea · 24/03/2012 21:49

I don't know whether she made the sex tape of her own free will.

But it didn't get put on the internet of her own free will did it?

catsareevil · 24/03/2012 21:52

How do we know how it got onto the internet?

KarmaK · 24/03/2012 21:54
