Have we a thread on this yet?

www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/oct/04/facebook-hate-speech-women-rape?newsfeed=true

I am really shocked.

OP posts:
Tortington · 08/10/2011 23:01

i kinda give up with feminism tbh., there are so many inconsistancies on mn that go unchallanged by the highly influential feminists - stuff i have challenged singularly.

and the rest speaks for itself - reductive reasoning - i must not have an opinion, i must, be drunk or attention seeking. i mean its really difficult when people just wnt say - 'ok custy, see your point...etc' but its about delivery as i started with.

you can say that you dont agree without accusing someone of being drunk or attention seeking or just posting they haven't got their own mind and want to defend their friend .

you see the feminism topic to me is a topic where you know you are going to get flamed unless you agree with the matriarchy. shame really. so many topics have won me over the years, not this. i have t enter into competitive stories or prove myself in some way - jut a bit rubbish, a chance for gossip, note me down on a fake spreadsheet - whatever, not for me, take me at my word or dotn. but dont infer that i have to legitimise myself this way, its cruel actually

Tortington · 08/10/2011 23:08

you see, i haven;t actually posted on anything rhubarb has said. merely the feminist response to it, the apologies that should be forthcoming etc..

merely by being rhubarbs friend my psots have been what i see as being attacked.

do you not see the complete irony of it all? how my opinion as a woman has been reduced....by feminists? how i have to almost say ' oy, hold on a minute, don't be presuming i dont know, i have no knowledge.

Prolesworth · 08/10/2011 23:12

You tipped up on this section tonight and posted that the MN feminists are all bullies (now deleted) and a bunch of other unwarranted, aggressive and weirdly incoherent stuff (much of which has been deleted) and then whinge that your point of view hasn't been respected and that the howwid feminists have been cruel to you?

KRITIQ · 08/10/2011 23:13

I've not been here long. I don't think I've encountered you before, so there's no history there for me. I am getting the feeling that you have a certain pov regarding feminism and you are seeking evidence to back that up - specifically reasons why you can say you were driven out by feminists or forced to reject feminist ideology. On this thread, you seem to have picked and picked, imho to provoke a reaction, even a mild one will do. That was about all you got, but enough for a decent flounce I suppose.

Seen this plenty of times elsewhere. It just comes across as rude, that's all. But, hopefully you got what you wanted and can skip along your way.

LeBOF · 08/10/2011 23:18

Being a feminist doesn't mean you have to agree with everything any other woman says, or there could be no discussion on mumsnet. I might be wrong, and haven't scrolled back, but all I remember of your entrance on this thread was to finger-wag at people who Rhubarb had felt upset by. I do understand why she felt upset, but I believe she has over-personalised a disagreement with her posts as an attack on her character. I also recall a dark hint at some kind of comeback to this whole sorry debacle at the forthcoming Christmas meet-up, so I'm not really buying the injured tone about the sisterhood here, sorry.

Come on, we are better than this, surely? Can't we discuss things more effectively at a better hour of the day tomorrow when feelings aren't running so high?

Tortington · 08/10/2011 23:23

howwid

nicely reductive there.

Tortington · 08/10/2011 23:25

come back at the meet up= wtf? oh this is truly strange bof, hardly anyone here is going to the meet up as far as i know.

what come back?

this is now officially out of hand. really upset by this now

LeBOF · 08/10/2011 23:30

I think you might have changed your name since you first posted on the thread, but it was at the end of your first post, if it is still there. I'm sure it will take the heat out if things if you find it and can clarify- nobody wants anyone to be distressed, I'm convinced of that much.

right really upset now cheers

giyadas · 08/10/2011 23:36

why be like that Custardo? Nothing I've read warrants your reaction

The post is still there. It's a bit ambiguous, but hopefully Custy can clarify that she is not intending to continue a row there. Can we not do the virtual equivalent of shaking hands and agreeing to differ? Nobody needs this.

Tortington · 08/10/2011 23:38

its like you simply cannot disagree on this topic.

now from reductive - like custy is pissed or something to custy is threatening?

truly truly upset about this and really how dare you. how dare you suggest that.

i have always been of the mind that no-one will bully me into not posting. have just deleted a huge post to that effect - that i wont post anymore. but i refuse

you wont bully me into not posting. you are being very unfair now. very unfair. god im so upset

Rocking up and calling us all bullies is "disagreeing" is it? Saying we're not proper feminists because we're too chicken to 'take on the regulars' is just offering another opinion is it?

giyadas · 08/10/2011 23:41

But BOF's post ^^ up there just said why can't we agree to differ?

Tortington · 08/10/2011 23:46

dont worry only a face n a screen and all that. the threatening custy.

wow glad you dont see anything to warrent my reaction makes it ok then - my reaction must be... not normal - what with the reductive reasoning behind her answers - custy threatens people now.

its ok feminists you win - you absolutley win. you only want to hear your view - i;m really really upset.

so you win, i didn't think i could be hounded from anywhere. but i am. and you can pat yourselves on the back at your good deed.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/10/2011 23:48

Well - this is a very long thread, so it may be I have forgotten a post - but as far as I was aware, no-one had said that rapists had noticeable characteristics, ones that people should be able to see, so they should know to steer clear of them. Rhubarb said that there are definable characteristics, but being able do define something doesn't mean you can see it from the outside. I suffer from depression - it is a definable characteristic, but you can't tell by looking at me that I suffer depression.

My impression is that people saw the mentions of definable characteristics, and decided that this meant 'definable and visible and if you didn't see them then being raped is your own fault' - which Rhubarb has said clearly isn't what she meant or what she believes, and then Rhubarb was leapt on for that mistaken belief.

Also, fwiw, I'm not Rhubarb's friend, and I think it is wrong to accuse someone of disbelieving rape victims and being a rape apologist. I know that no-one has used the exact phrase, 'You, Rhubarb, are a rape apologist' - she has read the comments aimed at her, and has read between the lines, in exactly the same way that others have read between the lines of her statements, and decided she believes rapists have visible characteristics that should ring alarm bells for women.

Uppity · 08/10/2011 23:48

No one is trying to bully you into not posting.

It would be nice if you didn't come and try and lay the law down though and had as much consideration for other people's feelings as you expect them to have for your's.

Tortington · 08/10/2011 23:49

yes actually proles. yes. calling someone names is bullying its bulying when you are 3 years old and it is when your 40 and just becuase you don't think so doens.t make it so.

you called me drunk - reducing my opinion. i have been called other things - and finally now im threatening.

but no, becuase you all say so, thats ok, nothing happening here, custy is deluded, pissed up, irrational - maybe its her time of the month or somethng, shit is it a full moon?

LeBOF · 08/10/2011 23:49

I really hope that in the cold light of day, something can be salvaged from this. I suspect that right now is not the time though, but I'm sure nobody wants to leave it at this pointless hostility. I know I don't.

giyadas · 08/10/2011 23:52

Confused No, I didn't see anything to warrant your reaction, neither did I see anything to warrant your last post. I wasn't trying to win anything, and I haven't done anything to hound you away, in fact I expressed how much I liked your other posts. But you've ignored every olive branch, why?

giyadas · 08/10/2011 23:53

post before last post, custardo, I can't keep up

Prolesworth · 08/10/2011 23:53

If you dish shit out don't be surprised when it gets chucked right back at you.
