Went for routine smear at drs this morning. It was horrible. Nurse said she saw a lump so brought in a gp to look. I very nearly passed out on the bed and went into a cold sweat, hyperventilating. Gp came in who said yes there is a lump. Obviously got referred. The nurse and GP was lovely. GP said she didn't know what it was but she's not a specialist and it could be so many things. Nurse was kind and apologising for the shock I was in

Background

I'm 33
Clear smear 3 years ago with no HVP present
No irregular bleeding

Fit and healthy female I can run 10ks with no issues.

Only issues I have is after sex and when I'm on period it can feel like my cervix wants to fall out. GP looked at cervix for this 12 months ago and said she couldn't see anything

I'm so worried. I've been goigling for three hours straight. Texting relatives. I've been sick and I keep violently shaking

I've two chikdren who I need to keep my head up for and my husband is being so kind and helpful and has come home from work but I can't stop shaking

I know no-one knows if I've got cancer but I've got 2 weeks to wait like this.

Dr was nearly crying with me. She said it was at the top of my cervix.

Nurse said it could too be so many things and it could even be hormone related

I am Reay shaking again now

Also I've had one sexual partner all my life and I'm DH one sexual partner who he's had intercourse with.

I know this means little really but I need to stop shaking.

I've tried to get in private but it's a ten day wait at private

Please can someone talk to me. The Dr was nearly crying with me and that's reay scared me. Maybe she was crying because it's bad or becuase I looked so terrified. She said she didn't know and these things can come back normal. Or if it is bad it's early and can be treated.

Nurse said its good my last smear was HPV negative 3 years ago

My friend had this recently, very similar age to you. They couldn't ID what it might be so she was on the 2 week pathway. Scared to death. Used to ring me in tears most evenings bless her.

Went for a biopsy, they put the needle in and it went pop. Pus everywhere. It was just a massive spot/boil. A bizarre place for it but they cleaned it out and got her some antiseptic gel & no issues since.

Hopefully it's something equally easily treated for you.

Terrifiedshakes · 12/04/2024 14:29

I can't remember if it was one lump or lots of little lumps

Thank you suncream
.I'll keep reading what you have written

It's really really unlikely to be cancer. Honestly OP. I don't blame you for being worried but you've kept up to date with your smears. You've done everything right. Chin up.

MuscariFan · 12/04/2024 14:32

I had this at my last smear. They're not my favourite sport, but have never 'bothered' me. Last time I went, I nearly went through the ceiling and the nurse couldn't complete the examination.

I was referred for a colcoscopy. Appointment came through quickly, and I had a polyp removed, which was confirmed a week or two later as benign.

I wonder if it is a hormone related thing, as this is my first smear since beginning HRT?

Anyway - it wasn't especially pleasant, but it's done and dusted now and no long term effects.

Zonder · 12/04/2024 14:34

I had this. It was a polyp. Please try not to catastrophise until you know what is happening.

Terrifiedshakes · 12/04/2024 14:36

I took a morning after pill over Xmas and it cooked my cycle up for the month completely. I'm wondering if that's linked. Maybe, maybe not.

It was just such a shock. I've never felt that close to passing out before and I've never seen a Dr had to stop herself from crying before but she did seem like a genuinely lovely love all round and a sensitive soul. And I was very, very scared.

Same here. The nurse went rushing off to get the GP. Was very unnerving. Also put on two week pathway. Turned out to be a polyp.

FleetingPurple · 12/04/2024 14:38

Gp was more likely crying out of empathy for your distress, could have triggered a trauma of her own or something like that.

Terrifiedshakes · 12/04/2024 14:38

I am the biggest cotastophizer in history. I do this every day about things. I'm no longer here cotastophsing about what I was worrying about this morning, even though I've focused on it for about 3 months now. That worry gone and now I'm on this worry.

The GP wasn't crying

Terrifiedshakes · 12/04/2024 14:40

I've read Poylps are not at the top of cervix. They said this was at the top of cervix.

OP posts:
Terrifiedshakes · 12/04/2024 14:42

No she wasn't crying but her face was distorting quite strongly as in a want to cry.

OP posts:
Monkeytapper · 12/04/2024 14:42

Why was the GP crying?

Villagetoraiseachild · 12/04/2024 14:43

Hi Op, one of my friends had this and she is a doctor. She found a bump herself and was in a right state until she got to a walk in and it turned out to be a cyst. They are very common apparently, but she had never heard of them in her medical training.
So I understand your distress. Please take some deep breaths.
Hug to you.

FleetingPurple · 12/04/2024 14:44

Sorry I meant re stopping herself crying.

Surely cervical polyps can.

Oneearringlost · 12/04/2024 14:46

OP,
🌷
It could be SO many innocent things.

  1. Cervical Ectropian, where a small bit of the cervix turns inside out, almost always innocent.

  2. A boil, as mentioned above

  3. A cyst on the vaginal wall, usually benign.

They have to refer you to exclude anything sinister, but it's more than likely something absolutely innocent.

Remember, all things are possible, but not all things are probable.

Easy and understandable to catastrophise when you're worried and in the dark though.

I've been doing smears and fitting coils for 25 years, as a nurse, and the vast majority of things I've had to refer, by far, are nothing sinister. It's appropriate the referral was done though. It sounds like you got good, appropriate care.
I'm sure the doctor was not nearly crying as she thought what she saw was a death sentence; more likely she was just moved by your distress.
Good luck, OP.@🌷

Terrifiedshakes · 12/04/2024 14:47

I could have read anything
I've been googling for a while now. Some helps, some does not. Cervical cancer stories don't help as they can begin with no symptoms like myself.

OP posts:
Oneearringlost · 12/04/2024 14:47

Yes, most definitely could be a Cervical polyp.

Oneearringlost · 12/04/2024 14:48

Don't google, you'll terrify yourself completely unnecessarily!

PurpleReindeer2 · 12/04/2024 14:49

Hi OP. I know it's so stressful and your mind automatically thinks the worst. However, it is much more likely to be something that is not cancerous and is easy to treat. I had similar and mine was a polyp. It was relatively easy to remove and I've had no problem since. Try and think positively. Sending lots of best wishes xx
