As promised, a new thread for those of us following GI.

There's a separate thread for recipes now - thanks to those of you doing the cutting and pasting of recipes .

I've lost 2 lbs this week, so that's goodbye to the 6lbs I put on in my 2 day "breadfest" !

Well done Puff! Your weight loss is inspirational. Bread chapter closed.

I haven't weighed myself this week as I did stray slightly over the weekend. However the stark realisation that there's only 9 weeks left until I have to put on a swimsuit soon made me reach for the green tea! I'm holding on as long as I can to buy a new cossie as I would dearly love to lose another stone before then.

Oh, to be in my green zone on holiday>>>>>>sigh

Saker · 17/05/2005 22:33

Does green tea really increase metabolism or is that just a myth?

emmamama · 17/05/2005 22:47

Not sure Saker, but it stops me wanting coffee which is a good thing as caffeine is a bit of a no-no. I do feel extremely virtuous drinking green tea too.

Saker · 17/05/2005 22:52

I just realised how much milk I drink in tea today and thought perhaps I ought to substitute a few more herbal/green teas.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 18/05/2005 09:23

Just thought I'd post some info in case anyone is interested.

Usually, I'm a bit sceptical about taking supplements, but as this was recommended by a bona fide dietician I'm going to give it try.

One of my friends is Type 1 diabetic and at her last meeting with the dietician (at St Thomas's Hospital in London), the dietician recommended a supplement to take which reduces/stops carbohydrate cravings.

It's a natural supplement - an amino acid called L-Glutamine.

I get stodge cravings at a certain time of the month, and thought I'd give this a try.

emmamama · 18/05/2005 12:27

Puff, can you buy these readily? Let us know if they work as it doesn't matter how much willpower you have, when it's your hormones you're fighting a losing battle. I'd say anything that helps must be worth a try. Esp. if it's from a professional.

p.s. here might not be the place to ask but did you get your you know what done?

PuffTheMagicDragon · 19/05/2005 10:05

Not yet emma, still plucking ( geddit?) up the courage! Feel better knowing I can maintain my modesty a bit.

I can't seem to get hold of this L Glutamine stuff - not sure what to try next to find it.

Cautionary tale........

I've been doing this diet for a while now and was beginning to feel that the critical success factor was that I liked the food I could eat and I was now mature enough to have a sensible approach to eating.

WRONG!

Yesterday I was looking after DS for the morning (unexpectedly) and we'd run out of porridge/allbran so I quickly reached for a fig roll and headed out....got to the play centre and needed to select something suitable for DS for lunch so chose a Panini with Mozerella and Roast Veg. It arrived and was huge so I had half and he had half (because I concluded it would be a shame to waste it). Got to work, went straight in to a meeting and some bright spark had ordered in a buffet of sandwiches and cakes. By this time my blood sugar was all over the place so I ate....

1 Crayfish sandwich
4 mini jammie dodgers
2 choc chip/choc base biscuits
2 slices of flapjack with toffee and pecans
crisps

Conclusion...I need this diet as much as ever to control my cravings for rubbish.
Back on track today.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 22/05/2005 20:03

Thanks Saker!

robin - I've done the same thing myself - it's like if I have a taste of bread I'm hooked again and can't stop scoffing!

I had a hard day on Friday as it was dh's birthday. Made him a cake and iced it and managed not to eat a slice of cake. However I think I might have well of done for the amount of licking of fingers and spoons that went on Managed another 1lb this week. I am not finding it too hard to stick to GI principles most of the time but I do find it hard to limit portion size. Also the worst thing about eating really nice quality wholegrain bread is that you want more of it .

PuffTheMagicDragon · 23/05/2005 12:11

Well done saker!

HI guys this is my third week and I really love the diet. I usually get intense sugar cravings this time of the month but am resisting although am more hungry than I was.

I have found it so much easier though and healthier than any diet I have done before. Although I know one slip off the wagon and I will need help to get back on. I am not weighing myself yet as I will get depressed and need to go down a few sizes first.

lilibet · 24/05/2005 12:13

Hello

I've been reading thru your threads on here and you have convinced me! I've done everything esle to loose weight bar chopping a vital body part off and now I'm going to give this a go.

Can I ask a few questions please?

Is there a way of calculating the GI of shop bought foods? I'm thinking pasta sauces etc?

Which are the best crispbready things?

And if I post what I eat on here everyday for a week or so, will someone check on me and make sure I'm not making any stupid mistakes?

lilibet · 24/05/2005 15:58

Where are you all??

PuffTheMagicDragon · 24/05/2005 17:26

lilibet, I'll try to come back and post a bit more tonight - in the middle of dinnertime etc.

Have lost 2lbs this week - gone through the 5 stones barrier - hurrah .

OP posts:
Saker · 24/05/2005 18:36

Wow - you have done so well Puff.

Lilibet - you can find out GI values from the GI database - link at the bottom of the thread. However it is Australian I believe so not all our foods are on it. I don't mind checking what you eat. However I'm not as experienced as some of the others as I have only been following the diet for 6 weeks or so.

CountessDracula · 24/05/2005 18:37

oooh just discovered there is a GI lunch place opening right next to my office!! think i will try it

lilibet · 24/05/2005 18:41

Let me know what's on the menu?

CountessDracula · 24/05/2005 18:46

will do. It is being kitted out at the moment, will find name and try and do a link to their website

Saker · 24/05/2005 20:45

I have been looking at the research on green tea. Does seem there's a bit of evidence it raises your metabolism and also causes you to preferentially burn fat. You need to drink about 3-4 cups a day.

lilibet · 24/05/2005 20:51

I will buy green tea then!

Am I ok on diet soft drinks?

Today I have eaten,

fruit for breakfast (I can't do breakfast - best I can manage is osme fruit at about 10 o'clock sat at my desk)

Hoummus with some wheat crackers, with added whatgerm and bran, and a salad for lunch

Peanut butter on toast (multi grain bread) for a snack

Veggie casserole and brown rice for tea

Comments/advice very welcome

PuffTheMagicDragon · 24/05/2005 21:23

Sounds good lillibet, just keep an eye on the quantity of hummus and peanut butter, plus the rice (I usually stick to 50g dry weight). You may need to fit in another small snack if you are not eating anything until 10am. I've kept going with this diet by reversing a lifelong breakfast skipping trend!

I eat the Finn Crisp crispbreads, I think they are a bit higher in fibre than most and taste better, but that's my personal preference.

I think it's hard to work out the GI of a lot of processed foods eg sauces in jars etc, so I've tried to avoid them.

Bread....bit confused. Anyone help with a defintion or better still an actual loaf name and brand that's ok. Had been merily eating ryvita but apparently they are Medium GI so have to be eaten with other foods that can counteract...is this right?
Thanks
