PuffTheMagicDragon · 17/05/2005 20:15

As promised, a new thread for those of us following GI.

There's a separate thread for recipes now - thanks to those of you doing the cutting and pasting of recipes .

I've lost 2 lbs this week, so that's goodbye to the 6lbs I put on in my 2 day "breadfest" !

Puff, did you ever find those supplements that your friend was recommended? How is she finding them?

Puff · 07/06/2005 17:19

Haven't spoken to her emmamama, but I did buy them from Holland & Barrett - have started taking them today - will let you know what I think in a couple of weeks!

lilibet · 07/06/2005 20:12

Still trying very hard!

But did have an ice cream today

Saker · 07/06/2005 20:18

Well done Lilibet (except the icecream of course ). I'm having a very hungry day. Have tried to overeat GI foods though would like a big carbohydrate dose .

Puff · 07/06/2005 21:41

Well done lillibet - a little ice cream ain't so bad!

Saker, do you think you're having enough of the ok carbs?

Saker · 07/06/2005 22:12

Well I have to admit that I thought I would try the thing of not eating any rice / pasta / bread with my evening meal this week so had bean salad, mixed veg salad, green salad and fish for tea. So have only had one bread roll at lunchtime in terms of "nice" carbs today. Unless porridge counts this morning? So perhaps that's a bad plan if it just leads to me eating more and this evening I have had two peaches, an apple and two more bowls of bean salad . Maybe some pasta with tea tomorrow...

Puff · 07/06/2005 22:39

I've just looked back at my Rick Gallop book too, which mentions the importance of protein for staving off hunger pangs - he recommends protein at every meal (shows a pic of the GI meal plate which is 50% veg 25% protein and 25% pasta/potato/rice).

I need to go back to trying to do this, because it does work. I have protein at breakfast (nuts in muesli), but I'm not always eating protein in the other meals.

Saker · 07/06/2005 23:10

I will bear that in mind, cottage cheese is good for protein.

TracyK · 08/06/2005 09:06

low fat cottage cheese or normal stuff?

anorak · 08/06/2005 09:33

TracyK, I like chickpeas mixed with chopped tomatoes, peppers and cucumber with a little finely chopped red onion makes a nice salad. The juicy vegetables should always be the main thing proportionally. You can add herbs and the dressing of your choice (we like oregano and olive oil) I often add Marigold veg bouillon to my salads to improve the taste. We call it 'magic powder' in our house, even simple sliced cucumber or tomato tastes great with a sprinkling of it and negligible calories.

Saker · 08/06/2005 09:38

Tracy, as low fat as you can get (usually about 1.5% I think). Usually I chop two or three dried apricots and mix in with it to make it more intresting or you could add chopped fresh fruit. (Or you can buy flavoured cottage cheese I think.)

robin3 · 08/06/2005 11:16

Bit of pastrami, prawns or crispy bacon is allowed and a little goes a long way in cheering up a salad. Other thing is a tiny shaving of parmesan or fresh tuna steak fried in a little soy sauce...cooks in seconds. OR grilled haloumi cheese.

If you haven't tried bulghar wheat....try it for dinners. It tastes really nice and gives you the carbohydrate you need to get through the night. Makes a veg stew/kedgeree or a salad (like couscous). Have to be careful not to eat too much but that an new potatos have been the answer for me.

lilibet · 08/06/2005 12:25

Who said it was little, puff?

I need non meat meal inspiration? Anyone like to post their favourites? I made the corn and red pepper bake out of AWT the other night and we weren't keen on that. Loved the tomato tart tho'.

Saker · 08/06/2005 13:18

Robin3, I have only had bulgar wheat about once - it was fine but I sort of forgot about it. I will have it with my salmon tonight.

Puff · 08/06/2005 13:21

lilibet, I'll try and post some stuff on the GI Diet Recipe thread later.

robin3 · 08/06/2005 13:51

Saker...put a little stock powder in it and herbs/toasted nuts/lemon juice/sauted veg/spices....whatever really. Yum

Saker · 08/06/2005 21:03

I had the bulgar wheat with a little bit of red pepper pesto mixed in and it was really nice. It has got more bite than rice. Thanks for reminding me about that . Plus I don't feel as starving tonight so it did help.

Puff · 08/06/2005 21:15

lilibet, which GI books do you have (don't want to duplicate recipes you already have)?

melbob · 08/06/2005 21:54

lilibet have a look at \link {http://women.timesonline.co.uk}and go to the section on diets they have recipes there. (why dodiets have o be under women's stuff?!!

melbob · 08/06/2005 21:56

Sorry this

lilibet · 09/06/2005 09:15

Helen Foster and AWT

Which does make me sound pathetic as there are tons in there!!

Puff · 09/06/2005 09:30

No, they are the best IMO.

Ok, will try to find some more veggie recipes tonight.

robin3 · 09/06/2005 15:05

It's official....I'm a comfortable size 14. Just been shopping and tried 3 different shops to make sure. Don't remember the last time I was....maybe when I was a student. Tucking in to my greek salad now and determined to keep going until my flabby arms and tum are all gone.

Saker · 09/06/2005 16:42

Well done Robin3 - I hope you bought something new.

Lilibet, you might not have looked at this recipe because it's in the meat section of AWT, but the lentils with the sausage patties are gorgeous. They do have bacon in but I'm sure you could take that out and increase the veg a bit.

Puff · 09/06/2005 17:36

Well done robin3 !
