PuffTheMagicDragon · 17/05/2005 20:15

As promised, a new thread for those of us following GI.

There's a separate thread for recipes now - thanks to those of you doing the cutting and pasting of recipes .

I've lost 2 lbs this week, so that's goodbye to the 6lbs I put on in my 2 day "breadfest" !

robin I eat oat bread or rye and limit myself to a slice with lunch for an open sandwich or two for breakfast sometimes with ricotta cheese and sugar free jam and sometimes with two teaspoons of peanut butter. (you can get these at tesco they do duchy oat bread organic)

I eat rye crispbreads but only ocassionaly and have made a great lentil spread to go on them from AWT book.

I try to eat a really good breakfast and make all sorts of things. It has really made a positive benefit to me.

lilibet · 25/05/2005 20:03

Could someone plese give me nice snack ideas? I'm waiting for the Helen Foster book to come and I need something other than peanut butter and toast!

Saker · 25/05/2005 20:24

Some examples of snacks I have:
low-fat or fat-free yoghurt (probably you should have sugar free as well but I can't bring myself to eat that)

cottage cheese (possibly with fruit or a bit of chopped dried apricot but not too much)

wholemeal scone (there is a recipe for this in the Rick Gallop book - I will post it if you fancy this, there are also recipes for pecan brownies or cranberry muffins, which could be another snack - they all use sweetener though so depends how you feel about that.)

fruit or veg such as apple and strawberries, tomatoes, raw carrot etc but not banana, mango or melon

In terms of bread, I am unsure about which brands are good. Often the ones with flakes don't seem that high in fibre or that nice to eat. I have a breadmaker and usually make a batch of rolls using wholegrain stoneground flour. I only eat one a day so they last a while.

lilibet · 25/05/2005 20:34

I'm starving!!!!

PuffTheMagicDragon · 26/05/2005 18:21

lilibet, can you overcome your aversion to breakfast and eat some muesli in the morning - I can recommend a delicious one, if you don't want to faff about making your own (will post what it is later).

I think this is what might be causing the hunger problem.

OP posts:
Saker · 26/05/2005 18:49

I have to admit I'm hungry quite a lot of the time these days on this diet. I also get a bit hypoglycaemic feeling sometimes especially in the afternoons. I like the food but I can't say it's that different to other diets in that I get just as hungry.

I am eating plenty as well , probably too much.

lilibet · 26/05/2005 21:51

This morning I had porridge - I can only eat it made with water and with added salt tho'. I love it but I know that it doesn't appeal to most people.

Same lunch finishing off the humous - a small tub did me three days with the biscuits and sald and then for tea I had the courgette, basil and sun dried tomato omeltte thing from AWR - it was gorgeous

Need my Helen Foster book

PuffTheMagicDragon · 26/05/2005 23:51

I still get hungry sometimes, but not as much as on other diets.

I keep a stash of emergency minestrone soup in the freezer for when hunger strikes (usually in the evening).

OP posts:
lilibet · 27/05/2005 09:19

Off to a party tomorrow night - I'm driving so at least don't have drink to worry about.

Waht do I aim for on the buffet table?

PuffTheMagicDragon · 27/05/2005 09:27

I think the best thing to do is steer clear of anything made from white flour, and then eat the rest in moderation, but steer clear of crisps.

OP posts:
Puff · 31/05/2005 11:29

Stayed the same this week, but not too unhappy as I've had a week off the diet.

Normally I wouldn't advocate buying The Sun newspaper, but apparently there's a GI Diet section all this week - I don't think it will say anything we don't know already, but there might be some new recipes.

robin3 · 31/05/2005 14:26

In need of a bit of encouragement.

Having sworn I wouldn't sucumb to weighing myself every week I did a week ago (3 weeks after last weigh in but not the full month from the last). Anyway I'd gained 4lbs! My clothes had been getting looser so I was gutted. Next day did it again and I'd lost a lb but was still gutted. DP (who's a fitness trainer in his spare time) also really hacked me off by saying 'you need to get more active...do more exercise'. WHEN I PROTESTED....I work full-time and spend my evenings and weekends rushing around doing practical things.
Anyway I ignored his advice and weighed myself again the following day....had lost another 4lbs so back to 1lb less than a month ago. Still not brilliant but liveable with.
Point of this post was firstly to ask...how can it fluctuate so much?????
Secondly, if I stop weighing myself all together how do I keep up the momentum?
Your advice greatly appreciated.

Saker · 31/05/2005 19:54

I lost another pound when I weighed on Saturday so still getting there slowly. Finally under 10st which is about the lowest I have been in 8 years.

It is hard Robin3 - I find it hard to stay motivated if I don't weigh weekly but then if I do weigh and I haven't lost I get demotivated equally. I think fluid levels can have a big effect - a litre of water weighs 1kg (ie 2.2lbs) so if you are more dehydrated or well-hydrated some days then you will get a different weight. If your clothes are getting looser you perhaps are losing and just retaining a bit of fluid (time of month etc?). You could measure your waist every three or four weeks. I haven't got any good suggestions, just say I feel the same really.

I have felt less hungry and been a bit better this week, but it is hard when you are the main meal preparer in the house. I made the children a lovely rice pudding tonight and can't resist a few tastings (only to check temperature, sweetness etc of course ). My dh has been doing the diet with me and weighs less than I do and is losing more rapidly. But I pack him up a nice lunch and make his tea ready for when he gets home, he has no temptation at any stage really. Sorry completely off at a tangent.

Saker · 31/05/2005 19:56

Also meant to say I bought a really nice fresh soup in Waitrose - it is made by Tideford - organic courgette, lettuce and basil and is v. low calorie (22 in 100g) so ideal for filling up at hungry times.

Puff · 31/05/2005 20:03

robin - I think I've mentioned this before, but I tend to lose well one week and then only a bit/stay the same the next. I've come to accept this is the way the diet works for me.

My weight fluctuates wildly when I eat bread or pasta, of any kind really - whether it's wholemeal/wholegrain or not and irrespective of portion size. I know if I steer clear of stuff containing wheat, my weight loss is steady.

It might be worth doing a food diary, just to see if you can track the weight fluctuations and perhaps see if there is a link to something you are eating.

Hang on in there - you're doing great!

Puff · 31/05/2005 20:03

Well done Saker !

lilibet · 01/06/2005 12:34

I did very well at the buffet - apart from one or two little bits - mainly had fresh salmon, green salald, pata sala, carrot salad, lovely wholegrain bread but there was some pepper slices folded round mozzarella and I prbably had a few to many of those - but they were really gorgeous!

My Helen Foster book has come now and the recipies in it look lovely. I'm not going to follow the plan but will stick to the principles best I can.

anythign good in The Sun? (never, ever thought that I would type that sentence!!)

Puff · 01/06/2005 16:48

Well done lilibet!

I bought The Sun for the first time ever yesterday , and I've bought today's. I haven't had a chance to look at them yet, but will impart any pearls of wisdom or decent recipes I find!

Puff · 01/06/2005 22:13

Hmmm, have read The Sun's GI Diet and am uninspired tbh. Nothing interesting to report - my foray into the newspaper has now ended!

Saker · 01/06/2005 22:28

I bet that took all of 3 minutes

Puff · 01/06/2005 22:29

About 2.5 I think !

vitomum · 01/06/2005 22:52

think this culd be the diet for me as i have had some (moderate) weight loss success on it. Although this has been using only the v basic principles (brown rice good / white bread bad) mainly gathered from Now and Heat magazines read in doctors waiting rooms (well i might have bought a couple actually). But i would like to increase my understanding more as on the days when i have started off on porridge, brown rice etc i have definitley fended off the post lunchtime crash in energy that i have always experienced. would also like to loose weight. Can anyone recommend a good book . website for getting more info?

Puff · 01/06/2005 22:54

vitomum - I think most people would vote for Helen Forster's "Easy GI Diet".

vitomum · 01/06/2005 23:04

thank you puff. will prob go and get that.

lilibet · 02/06/2005 12:36

Back to the weighing yourself problem. I weigh myslef almost daily but tend only to 'note' my Thursday weight as that is my 'weigh in day'.

I started this last Monday at X stone 11. I gradually went down till on Monday, one week in, I was x stone 8 (woo hoo), but then on Tuesday I was 9lb and yesterday and today (weighing day) I was 10lb. So after 10 days and with no alcohol at all I have only lost one sodding pound.

I have porridge for breakfast, lunches have been tuna and bean salad, or pasta salad, or 'good bread' with low fat philly and salad. Tea's have either been out of the books or last night I had salmon cooked in foil, with veg and new potatoes.

Am rather pee'd off but I shall continue - I am more awake in the mornings but that could be down to no booze. I'm not hungry between meals and am not doing my usual trick of eating 5 or 6 slices of bread and butter when I get in from work before tea. (yep, i did that - and sometimes ate spoonfuls from the chocolate spread jar at the same time)

Would welcome advice and suggestions tho'
