PuffTheMagicDragon · 17/05/2005 20:15

As promised, a new thread for those of us following GI.

There's a separate thread for recipes now - thanks to those of you doing the cutting and pasting of recipes .

I've lost 2 lbs this week, so that's goodbye to the 6lbs I put on in my 2 day "breadfest" !

Believe me I sympathise. Not sure if I'm going to get past my plateau. Am planning not to weigh myself for a month but buy a pair of trousers that are tight and try them on every week.

colette · 03/06/2005 13:25

I have following the g.i. and have been lurking on the threads on a regular basis

Lilibet are you weighing yourself at the same
time of day ? Just in case it makes a difference I weigh myself before breakfast , and am only losing a pound a week. The great thing is I know I can keep this up- I am eating food I like.

piffle · 03/06/2005 13:36

I found that when I quit alcohol it took 14 days to register any decent kind of weight loss!
Very frustrating and enough to send you for the wine thinking it will not make any difference anyway!
I've lost 2 kgs overall after 3 mths of doing this, I have had days off, my motivation is as much for health and energy as for losing weight, although to get below 60 kgs would feel great.
I have just had AWT courgette sundried tomato and basil frittata, very filling, dead simple to make and very nice with a watercress salad!
Tonight we're doing his thai steamed salmon which is out of this world yummy with stir fried veges.
I think when buying sauces like fresh pasta sauces it is easy enough to deduce, anything with cream will be worse, GI or no GI. Tomato based sauces with 100% GI ingredients are our fave, the arrabiata one particularly.
I also use a lot of bulgur wheat and chickpeas in salads to make them a little more substantial for a change etc.
Am on a two day total semi detox just fruit, veg and lean protein!

Puff · 03/06/2005 17:37

lilibet, try to weight yourself just once a week if you can (I know it's tempting to do more).

I've had to cut out bread and pasta altogether because the wheat completely bloates me out and I either pile on pounds or don't lose - sneaked in some bread and pasta last week and felt bloated and didn't lose. When I stick to replacing bread and pasta with beans, pulses, rye crispbreads, and a little pumpernickel bread, I lose weight reasonably easily.

vitomum · 04/06/2005 11:17

lillibet, i have found that if don't eat any proper carbs at dinner (Bread pasta potatoes rice)it definitely speads up weight loss.

Saker · 06/06/2005 13:07

Managed another pound this week. I can't believe it is still coming off , I never have got past this weight (apart from when going in the other direction ) - feel very pleased. I have resolved to keep going until I go on holiday at the end of term.

anorak · 06/06/2005 13:29

Hi all. I've been using this diet for a few months now. I lost about 10lb initially, and because I'd acheived a landmark goal of getting below 11 st I've had a bit of a break. I work better with diets if I have breaks from them.

I stuck to mainly GI food for a while but with the odd cheese toastie here and there and one or two treats. My big downfall is my wine. I drink far too much of it. But I've maintained my weight just below 11st.

Anyway, after another very boozy weekend I've decided to go for the next big push and see if I can lose another half a stone before my birthday (9th July). Just cutting out my wine should make a huge difference! I feel really positive about it now and glad to declare what I'm aiming at here - it always helps if you've told someone as you don't want to report lack of success!

robin3 · 06/06/2005 13:37

Glad to report I appear to be loosing weight again....obviously a month long blip. Recent succes may be down to the fact that I was alone 24/7 for 4 days with my boistrous 18 month old. Harder to keep moving when at work.

Well done Saker!

Good luck Anorak!

Find this thread really helps me to keep going....ideally have 7-14 lbs to go.

Saker · 06/06/2005 14:49

Well done robin3 !

Good luck Anorak.

Puff · 06/06/2005 14:59

Well done saker and robin .

Good luck anorak!

Have taken myself in hand and getting back on track after 10 days of faffing about, although I've not put on.

Will weigh in tomorrow as usual.

Have also joined Majorie Cod's thread until 25th June as I need someone to beat me about the head before I go on hols - want to shift 6lbs by then.

Saker · 06/06/2005 19:51

Puff, it must be hard to keep the momentum going after you have been doing it a while. I guess you need a break from it every now and then. Good luck starting up again.

melbob · 06/06/2005 22:26

Hi Dh amd I started GI weight loss today using Helen Forsters book. Stuck to genius plan all day and read it properly (we know it would have made sense to have read it before!) in it she says you should add calories if you have more wight than an 11st women to loose and believe me I do (so does DH) I have added calories with granary bread and hummus as they are low GI. Does any one know if this is the right thing to do?

Puff · 06/06/2005 22:28

melbob, as long as what you are adding are low gi then I'm sure it's fine.

Puff · 06/06/2005 22:30

Thanks saker .

I think I do need a break every now and then - it's a long haul!

melbob · 06/06/2005 22:36

Thanks Puff and well done on your weight loss. Reading your threeads has been part of my inspiration. I have 6-8 stone to loose depending on which book you consult. So day one down several hundred left to go

Puff · 06/06/2005 22:45

Thanks melbob .

Good luck with the diet, and you are being really sensible - it's important to add enough calories in when you are looking at longer term dieting.

Puff · 07/06/2005 10:32

Stayed the same this week - fair enough - would not have expected to lose.

The diet "holiday" is over, back to business - want to lose 6lbs in the next 18 days before hols.

desperatehousewife · 07/06/2005 10:45

hello, (whispers....) can i join in please?
Lost a stone on GI last year, but since put it on and a further stone. Yuk. Anyway, today is the start of the new me. I am going to try and be really focused - I feel so vile at the moment, all my clothes are tight and I look pregnant - which doesn't help because I actually do want to get pregnant! But I need to lose 2 stone if I can beforehand. I am going to weigh myself every tuesday morning and my aim is 2lbs a week.

TracyK · 07/06/2005 10:51

Question re tinned chickpeas - is it just me or are they quite dry? any tips to juicy them up - or is that the way they are meant to be?

desperatehousewife · 07/06/2005 10:57

lemon juice...?

TracyK · 07/06/2005 10:58

well i've tried olive oil and leaving them sitting in it for ages but they still seem dry. what brands do you use?

Saker · 07/06/2005 11:01

wouldn't eat them just as they are but mix with some beans or veg for a mixed salad and make a dressing.

Puff · 07/06/2005 11:28

Welcome desperatehousewife .

Tracey - I know what you mean about the tinned chickpeas - I find them ok in cooking and making hummus.

Not sure what to suggest apart from going through different brands.

TracyK · 07/06/2005 11:31

should I just add them to cooking rather than making them the main ingredient ie chickpea/red onion and olive oil - just hide them in curries/stews etc? I felt very virtuous making the chickpea salad - but no-one really liked it - including me!

Puff · 07/06/2005 11:40

I think perhaps the tinned ones get overcooked before being canned.

Not sure how long freshly made ones keep (if say covered in water) in the fridge.
