Having always been chunky since I was about 17, now I am really at breaking point. I have started so many healthy eating plans in the past and never get beyond the first week until now.

I don't really want to do a 'diet' as such, just cut down on the calories and excercise sensibly. I don't think I could or (want to) cut any food groups out so so far I have been just making healthier choices. More fruit and veg, not snacking on biscuits/ crisps etc. For quick and easy meals, I have been using the weight watchers prepared meals which are suprisingly tastey.

I am 5ft 8 and weighed 13stone 13lbs two weeks ago. Meaning I am nearly obese according to the body mass index. For the past 2 weeks I have been watching what I eat and going swimming twice a week. I now weigh 13stone 7lbs which I am pleased the healthy eating/ fitness plan seems to be working although I am still suffering from cravings and need motivation from you nice mnetters!

My waist is around a size 12 which is fine by me but all my fat seems to collect on my thighs and bum, meaning I have to buy size 18 jeans just to fit over my legs and then they just gape and look horrid around my waist. Nothing fits comfortably on my bottom half, I am so out of proportion.

I have 20 month old ds who keeps me busy but I do feel that having eaten all his left overs and snacking everytime he does for the past 20 months has not been kind to my wobbly bits!!

So that's the story so far.... anyone want o join in or share their stories??

Ponymum, I found the same as Alice that I lost weight gradually once I stopped BF. Before stopping I hadn't really lost anything for ages.

Caramelwaffle definitely agree that less mess and clutter = less eating. Always feel invigorated with a clutter-free house

Mousey84 - have ordered the book from Amazon Adding to my knowledge, or adding to my clutter?

Is anybody watching the BBC1 programme "10 things you need to know about dieting" ?

It is very informative.

So far it advises you should;

Eat when hungry

Eat from a smaller plate

Eat smaller portions (be aware of portion size)

Eat foods as soup instead of solids. Your stomach stays expanded for longer, thus you
feel fuller for longer

Be aware that if you skip meals your body is "hardwired to crave fatty foods"

Be aware that eating protein will make you feel fuller for longer (due to a key hormone PP-something-or-other sending out messages to your brain)

Eating low fat dairy foods helps "wash out" fat from your body

Be aware that if you eat foods from one colour group, you will naturally consume less

Be aware that excercise goes on burning fat even after you have finished the session (up to 24 hours afterwards)

Keep active day to day i.e. walk up stairs instead of taking the lift

Time to buy a decent blender methinks

I have been wondering why I often feel so hungry after a large solid meal.

alicecrail · 28/05/2009 08:46

Good morning everyone

Caramel it's funny isn't it, how half an hour after eating a big meal you are hungry again. I do make quite a bit of soup in the winter, but not so much in the summer, perhaps i ought to start.

I have lost 2lbs this week, but i think that is because i have been ill with a flu type thing and stomache ache, and no food tasted of anything. Definitely not of what i have eaten as i have eaten quite a lot of crap the rest of the time

caramelwaffle · 28/05/2009 11:18

Good Morning

No change here. I have however written a food diary most days. After totting up the calorie count I have found that on average I have been consuming around 3200 calories a day!

Consuming lots of "healthy food/drink" has not meant consuming "less food/drink".

I have been consuming far too much alcohol for weight loss (and at one stage was not even counting it as part of my daily consumption !)

Two glasses of wine adds up to a lot of calories.

Good luck everyone.

Oh crap. Have slightly put on. It has been a very hard week as I am still recovering from the operation, so am unable to go for walks or even pick up DD. Resting on the sofa is not good for losing weight. Also I have been really hungry all week, which is so annoying. I will start off the day thinking, right it's vege soup / Weight watchers meal tonight, then end up agreeing with DH that we need to eat burgers and chips instead! TBH I think the only reason I have lost at all in the last few weeks is because they starved me for two days in hospital on nil by mouth! Maybe I am making up for it now. Must get back on track though - I was doing so well before.

I had a really bad weekend though We went to FIL's for the weekend and drunk lots of wine, ate loads of yummy crisps, shepherds pie (with seconds) rhubarb crumble, roast beef with all the trimmings and strawberries and cream

Pleased to be going in the right direction again, and hope this will continue. I have been keeping a graph since October last year. In the overall picture I have slowed down my weight loss in the last month. Understandable I suppose, but now I really want to pick up again on the walking and the healthy eating. The chart I keep has monthly goals so this thread is good to keep me focussed on a weekly basis as well!

nannyogg, is you are looking for more inspiration I have been lurking on this thread and finding it quite helpful. It is quite active and everyone is posting what they are eating eat day, with lots of talk about the Food Focus thing (which I must admit I haven't investigated myself yet).

Ponymum · 04/06/2009 12:22

Sorry about typos . Didn't get much sleep last nght. Should be if you are looking for inspiration, and what they are eating each day.

alicecrail · 04/06/2009 19:57

ponymum I have signed up to Food Focus today, looks really good and the best bit is it lists childcare as a form of excercise

Ponymum · 04/06/2009 22:53

alicerail so does that mean that I can count as exercise all the time that I am supervising DD playing with her toys while I am messing around posting important updates on Mumsnet?

alicecrail · 05/06/2009 08:40

Yes! I put that i do childcare 8hrs a day (i look after her full time but DH does quite a bit morning/evenings) and it reckons it burns about 400 cals!! That can't be true?

thesockmonsterofdoom · 05/06/2009 10:05

I am after my birthday blow out I have now got back to my starting weight. Starting a new job in 2.5 weeks, would be great if I could be a bit motivated before that so I start off in good patternds.

thesockmonsterofdoom · 05/06/2009 14:10

OMG I got weighed at boots today as I have got some of those alli tablets, there scales reckn I weigh 12st 11 which is a stone iover what my wii fit says, wii fit must be right otherwise dh weighs about 8 stone which would surely make him not far from dead. I am not happy.

alicecrail · 05/06/2009 16:24

When i got weighed at the hospital i was 10st13 and at home i was 10st5. Remember that you have outdoor clothes on, shoes, belt etc - makes a huge difference.

Crap - put on nearly half a kg. It seems that stopping BF has had an effect on the weight loss. But I have also been very slack on the food and wine. Had a girlfriend over Wed night when DH was away for work. We ate: a tub of guacamole with flatbreads, a bottle of pink bubbles , a big bowl each of cheese tortellini with pesto, parma ham and pine nuts, and a huge slice each of sublime double cream lemon cheesecake. Oh, and another half bottle of wine. She also left a box of chocolate truffles and I ate two last night even though I wasn't hungry and didn't really like them... what's that about?

Verdict: must try harder.

This afternoon I am going to prepare things for a picnic to take to the horse trials at Bramham tomorrow. I am thinking green salad and a vegetable frittata. (NOT pork pies, bread and hummus, and cake!)
