Having always been chunky since I was about 17, now I am really at breaking point. I have started so many healthy eating plans in the past and never get beyond the first week until now.

I don't really want to do a 'diet' as such, just cut down on the calories and excercise sensibly. I don't think I could or (want to) cut any food groups out so so far I have been just making healthier choices. More fruit and veg, not snacking on biscuits/ crisps etc. For quick and easy meals, I have been using the weight watchers prepared meals which are suprisingly tastey.

I am 5ft 8 and weighed 13stone 13lbs two weeks ago. Meaning I am nearly obese according to the body mass index. For the past 2 weeks I have been watching what I eat and going swimming twice a week. I now weigh 13stone 7lbs which I am pleased the healthy eating/ fitness plan seems to be working although I am still suffering from cravings and need motivation from you nice mnetters!

My waist is around a size 12 which is fine by me but all my fat seems to collect on my thighs and bum, meaning I have to buy size 18 jeans just to fit over my legs and then they just gape and look horrid around my waist. Nothing fits comfortably on my bottom half, I am so out of proportion.

I have 20 month old ds who keeps me busy but I do feel that having eaten all his left overs and snacking everytime he does for the past 20 months has not been kind to my wobbly bits!!

So that's the story so far.... anyone want o join in or share their stories??

Can I belatedly join too? (sidles up cautiously) I started seriously trying to lose weight in the summer when my high blood pressure still hadn't gone down after the birth of ds. I was 13 st 7 and am now 11 st 13 but seem to be having trouble getting any further. I've never posted on a weight-loss thread before but am feeling the need for some added motivation!

fraggletits · 25/03/2009 20:06

Hi Goldberry welcome, I am finding posting here really motivating already and it's only day 1 hope we are all going to do really well with this....summer is looming after all!

Have really watched my eating today for the first time in a long time and it hasn't been too bad. No mindless snacking on junk, weighed my pasta for dinner, it was a much smaller portion than I've been used to but I have got to get it into my head that I'm not pregnant or breastfeeding anymore so there is just no need for a double man size portion anymore!

I've been dipping into my old Rosemary Conley low GI book. Really want to get into the exercise dvds but it's the easter hols next week....for a month , that means either lots of running around on purpose with the kids or I'll have to wait til they're in bed, but before DH gets home.....

AMumInScotland · 25/03/2009 20:06

If you're doing a "not dieting but losing weight by cutting down a bit" thread, can I join too please? I've managed to get down from 11st 10 back at New Year to 11st 3 now, but would like to shift a bit more. I haven't joined a weight loss thread before, as I don't plan to do "dieting" but a bit of mutual support and gentle reminding might help keep me on track...

fraggletits · 25/03/2009 20:47

Hi AMIS - welcome too - i'm like you, I just don't have the time/willpower to follow a strict diet. The only 'proper diet' things I'm going to do are;

  1. using spray oil wherever oil needed
  2. low fat mayo in sandwiches (no spread)
  3. skinless/fatless meat
  4. More veg, less carb at dinner.
  5. Snacking on fruit

And then trying to trick my mind into believing that junk and huge comforting portions are NOT treats.....they just make me fat and miserable

AMumInScotland · 25/03/2009 21:08

Thanks - I'm mostly just going for smaller portions and avoiding snacks, which seems to be working so far. I don't really think diets work, not in the longterm anyway, so I'm trying to get my head round the idea that I'm going to have to change my eating habits, permanently, if I'm going to get and keep this weight off. I reckon strict rules, counting calories, cutting out food groups etc are just not sustainable, not for me anyway.

fraggletits · 25/03/2009 21:24

cutting down alot on the wine will also help i'm hoping

Hope you don't mind me crashing the party ladies. Good luck with your weight loss. I sooo need the support too.

thesockmonsterofdoom · 26/03/2009 07:11

Op has dissapeared, not crashing the party if you are on the guest list
I have my worst morning for snacking this morning, playgroup, I normally have a bag of crisps and then abput 20 biscuits when the tea comes (I make all the teas so feel like I deserve a treat)so this moprning I have decided I can either have 2 biscuits or a bag of crisps. that will be my treat for the whole day so I had better enjoy it if I do.

savageisfat · 26/03/2009 07:20

Welcome everyone, I'm so pleased to see how many of you have joined in and shring your tips etc. Great to know I am not alone and I really hope we can help each other along.

I feel a bit of a traitor to you all now as after 2 weeks of healthy eating and excercise, I went out for dinner with a friend last night and ate a huge portion of gorgeous Italian Chicken with chips and a chocolate sundae. Feel a bit guilty but oh it was so nice! I hardly ever go out for meals (only second time since having ds) so I am hoping that with it being such a rarity that I won't be tempted for a long time! I went out with the full intention of ordering a sald but I just thought, I haven't been out for so long that I guess temptation took over! Strictly back on track today though. I also have arranged with my friend that I met with last night, to go to aquafit every monday too.

I feel confident that this time one night of scoffing fatty foods hasn't demotivated me or derailed the entire diet, whereas previous times, as soon as I've been tempted I've just given up.

morning everyone! Hi Savage - I can't order anything remotely salad-like either if I go to a restaurant!....same with a takeaway - I actually tend to go for the fattiest thing.......treat mentality

Hi plusone - welcome, this thread is on a roll (so to speak)

I've had my 2 coffees with skimmed milk and 1 slice wholemeal toast with cottage cheese this morning. I'm not really a breakfast person so that's about all I can manage.

Going to try and do Rosemary Conley - FAT ATTACK dvd this morning after I take DD1 to nursery and put DD2 to bed.

Have a nice day ladies - chat later

nannyogg · 26/03/2009 08:33

Morning all!

Hi Savage, your meal last night sounds yummy.

IMO it's definitely ok to have what you fancy now and then, otherwise eating just becomes a chore, and not something to be enjoyed.

So far today I've had cereal with a handful of dried fruit, a glass of apple juice and a cup of tea. I'm going to do half an hour on the wii fit later. I need to lose half a stone to move down from obese to overweight, so that's my first goal.

Hi Goldberry, AMumInScotland, Caramelwaffle and plusonemore. Have a good day everyone!

savageisfat · 26/03/2009 08:41

Thanks for the support ladies! The one night of treats actually means I feel more motivated really.

Welcome plusonemore! Nice to have you here. x

I think the important thing is not to go overboard with thinking "food = treat" or conversely "food = terrible sin". So, if you get a chance to go out and enjoy yourself with friends, don't feel bad about having something you will enjoy. It's not meant to be about punishing yourself for being heavier than you'd like. It's not the occasional nice meal out that makes us overweight, it's the regular "more than we burn" most days/weeks that has the effect, and so it's getting that down to "less than we burn" most days that will do the trick in the long-term.

And to do that we have to be honest with ourselves about where the biggest culprits lie - so, an occasional meal out isn't the problem, but if you are eating out every weekend, then you need to develop a strategy for not going overboard with your choices. A single glass of wine isn't that much, but 2 or 3 glasses most nights soon adds up. A full-fat latte and a cake when you meet a friend you haven't seen for ages isn't a problem, but as SockMonster says, a big heap of biscuits every time you're at playgroup is something you need to watch.

I think that psychology is very important too - certainly the idea of "I've fallen off the wagon, might as well give up completely" is often one that scuppers people. You have to turn that round to "Well, that was a lovely treat, but now we focus again".

For me, I think one of the major reasons anything like a diet doesn't work is that as soon as I think "I'm not allowed that" my stubborn streak kicks in big-time with "Who are they to tell me what I can't have!" and then I eat it just to show who's in control. (Er, except I'm not in control, else I would stick to the plan ). So I have to make sure what I think is "Yes, I want that, but I also want to lose weight, so I am choosing not to eat it", which reinforces the idea that this is something I am choosing to do because it's important to me.

fraggletits · 26/03/2009 10:36

Yes it's all about learning control. Recognising when you might eat junk mindlessly and being aware of it, like I can be good in the morning and lunchtime but then kids teatime & leftovers....nightmare.

I've got a night out on saturday with friends I haven't seen for a while and there's no way I'll have one small wine and a salad. I'm going to eat and drink what I like and have a good time...but like AMIS says, i'm determined not to then think 'oh well, ruined it all now might as well have a bad week too'. Because anything I've lost this week will just go straight back on and it'll be that little bit harder to find the motivation again.

MaggsS · 26/03/2009 10:57

Hi all,

Have to agree with what you have all said. A little of what you fancy in moderation is fine and making yourself feel miserable isn't going to work.

It has to be a new approach. Not a diet but a healthier way of eating.

I also believe for me I have to exercise too.

It's hard to find the time with 3 DC's but I am determined to do something even if it's a walk round the village with DD2 or swimming once a week.I also have a Wii fit I must dust off

It's great to have loads of support and I really feel this time it is going to work.

The big 40 is looming!!!!!!!

plusonemore · 26/03/2009 11:16

has anyone got any good tips for not giving in to treats / extra helpings? I have considered putting horrible photos on the fridge but dont want everyone to see them!!!

caramelwaffle · 26/03/2009 11:43

Good morning everyone.

This is all so encouraging. It seems as if everyone is recognising where their problems with food lie.

One of my major issues has been to always skip breakfast and then be ravenous later on. This morning, even if I did not "want" to eat, I have decided, I actually do not want to be fat - more.

So this morning I ate;

2 Manderines
1 Banana
1/2 apple

and am preparing a large jug of fruit/herbal tea. I cannot drink anything containing caffeine, so this is a great alternative.

Have a great - and healthy - day.
