Having always been chunky since I was about 17, now I am really at breaking point. I have started so many healthy eating plans in the past and never get beyond the first week until now.

I don't really want to do a 'diet' as such, just cut down on the calories and excercise sensibly. I don't think I could or (want to) cut any food groups out so so far I have been just making healthier choices. More fruit and veg, not snacking on biscuits/ crisps etc. For quick and easy meals, I have been using the weight watchers prepared meals which are suprisingly tastey.

I am 5ft 8 and weighed 13stone 13lbs two weeks ago. Meaning I am nearly obese according to the body mass index. For the past 2 weeks I have been watching what I eat and going swimming twice a week. I now weigh 13stone 7lbs which I am pleased the healthy eating/ fitness plan seems to be working although I am still suffering from cravings and need motivation from you nice mnetters!

My waist is around a size 12 which is fine by me but all my fat seems to collect on my thighs and bum, meaning I have to buy size 18 jeans just to fit over my legs and then they just gape and look horrid around my waist. Nothing fits comfortably on my bottom half, I am so out of proportion.

I have 20 month old ds who keeps me busy but I do feel that having eaten all his left overs and snacking everytime he does for the past 20 months has not been kind to my wobbly bits!!

So that's the story so far.... anyone want o join in or share their stories??

Have been MIA for a while, sorry. Have lost another pound but am not happy with myself as I can eat really well for a couple of days and then just pig out the next evening. Can't figure out why I am sabotaging myself (like Plusonemore I guess?)

The one bright thing is that I have kept up with the running program, now about to finish week 7 and am running for 25 minutes straight.

Congrats to those doing well!

Sorry for the late weigh in. Well done everyone on the losses. How are we all feeling today??

I really need to get back into my swimming and excercising. It's been so long since I did anything like that and I actually quite miss it.

Hope everyone is doing well. Not much to report here. Had a bit of an up and down week with regards to food but still lost a lbs so can't be too bad!

OP posts:
AMumInScotland · 15/05/2009 11:25

PlusOneMore - I don't know about "just one week", but have you tried keeping a really detailed food diary for a few days to see where you could cut back? I tried at one stage counting up all the calories I was getting (not to limit them, just to find out) and was startled at how much more some of my meals were than others. That helped me to be aware of some of my choices and to cut back without feeling bad.

OnlyAPhase - do you know why you're "pigging out"? Are you denying yourself things you like, then reacting against it, or is it a habit (eg crisps with tv)? Anything you can do to spot what the pattern is will help you to get out of it. For me there's a whole psychological thing if I feel like I'm "not allowed" things, because I'm so stubborn I'll instantly want them more just to spite "them", whoever they are! So I have to keep my head right while I'm trying to lose weight - to feel empowered by it rather than "obedient". So for me it has to be "yes of course I could eat this, but I'm choosing not to because I'm going to shift this next pound, and won't I feel good about that"

That may not be how your head works, but if you can understand what your thoughts and feelings are when you're over-indulging, then you have far more chance of counter-acting them.

Apologies for late weigh in. 12st 5lb - 1lb off. And I'll start using the gym that I've been paying for from Monday

plusonemore · 17/05/2009 06:56

yeah think i will start the food diary again, but feel i need something to kick start my metabolism. not going to do one week (didnt realise it was tablets) but am thinking bout doing the 2 bowlscereal thing- anyone tried? a couple of things i didnt realise but came across while looking for miracle answer on google!:

if you are dehydrated your metabolism slows down (i dont drink nearly enough water- 1 small glass and 3 cups of tea?)

the more muscle you have the more fat you burn

so......new plan-

  1. do exercise videos- different one each day incl pilates 3x wk
  2. food diary, try 2 bowls cereal for a bit see if that helps
  3. cut down (but not out!) on wine consumption
  4. drink more water!!!!!
  5. and stop having 'just one bite / just one bit / a little wont hurt'

any more ideas to get things going?

savageisfat · 17/05/2009 20:16

I've eaten so much today it's revolting, I litterally think I may burst

I haven't even been hungry but just got bored!!!! I hate Sundays, I always eat waaaayyyy too much and today just sat on the floor doing play doh and finger paints with ds I couldn't even be bothered to clean up after us so it's all still laid out on the dining room floor!

Oh dear, I need more kicks up the bum I think!

Hi, can I join? I have been trying to lose weight since my DD was born in September last year. I have finally started to have some success in the last few months but still have a long way to go. Apologies first - I weigh in kg and struggle to understand stones and pounds. I am using a conversion website to translate, so hope this makes sense: I was 96 kg (15st 2) after DD was born, now 79 kg (12st 6). My target is to end up somewhere in the 60s so that I am never over 70 kg (11 st) again.

When I was younger I was 55 - 60 kg (around 9st) but have steadily put on weight as I got older. After I met DH it started to go horribly wrong (why?) and by the time I got pregnant I was the heaviest I had ever been at 84 kg (13st 3). I then had a terrible pregnancy with severe SPD and ended up in a wheelchair then on virtual bed rest - so ended up with ANOTHER 2st at the end of the pregnancy! The sad thing is I used to be a real "action girl" type with hill climbing, horse riding, mountain biking etc. DH wishes I still was, and I really want to be that person again as that's the life I want to lead.

I have read the thread and you all sound really supportive. I could do with some help to keep this journey going in the right direction so would love to tag along with you.

plusonemore · 17/05/2009 21:16

boo ponymum!
nice to see you here Sounds like you are doing really well already- got any tips?! :O

Onlyaphase · 17/05/2009 21:24

Hi Ponymum and welcome. I think you've summed up what a lot of us feel - when we met our DHs we were all somewhat thinner and more active! Good luck and glad you could join us

Savage please don't burst, you will have even more mess to clear up from the dining room floor then

Plusonemore I think your suggestions sound great. No ideas from me to add to it though I think that if you drink more it will definitely help. Maybe drink some water/tea when you feel hungry to see if you are really thirsty?

AMuminScotland no I don't really know why I pig out. I know what my trigger foods are (carbs) and the danger times....mid afternoon, late afternoon and suppertime. I honestly think it is something to do with the feel of food in my mouth - I might have one piece of toast, then feel I have to have another, and another. Once I start eating it can be difficult to stop. Like in a trance, then I wake up and realise how much I've eaten.

The busier I am the less I eat, and if I can distract myself for 10 minutes after I've eaten one decent helping, then I won't go back and eat more. Any helpful suggestions from anyone as to how they overcame this?

Ponymum · 17/05/2009 22:53

Hi plusone! I must admit I am a bit amazed how much I have lost now that I write it down. It doesn't feel like that much as I am still in such 'fat' clothes. (But then at my fattest I kind of just hung around the house in size 24 pyjamas. )

I feel that I need a bit more structure and discipline now. The weight loss in the last 7 months has happened with just paying attention to the basics that I have picked up over years of attempting diets. I did WW many years ago and do think they teach good stuff mostly. Like if you are going to have a little snack, put the nuts /crackers /whatever (who am I kidding, I mean crisps) in a little dish instead of eating out of the packet so you don't forget when to stop.

My biggest problem is 1. I am a foodie and love to cook elaborate fattening stuff, and 2. I need a large amount of exercise in my lifestyle which has been missing lately. Time for some focus.

nannyogg · 18/05/2009 07:54

Hi again everyone.

Sorry I've been AWOL. Not been doing too well unfortunately. I've been a bit under the weather and generally having a bit of a rough time. DH has had his hours reduced at work and we've had a lot to organise. The food stuff has taken a back seat, but I have been going to keep fit on Wednesdays and I'm really enjoying that.

I'm back now and ready to start again. I'll weigh in again on Thursday. Welcome ponymum

alicecrail · 21/05/2009 07:38

Morning all - am weighing in extra early today as we will have no electricity for most of day. I've lost a pound, but feel upbeat and optimistic about things in general. We've booked a holiday for the beginning of June, and I spent Monday trying on summer clothes (summer hasn't quite hit Up North yet, so they were still packed away). Anyway, none of them really fit, I was so angry with myself that I have been positive and strong around food since. Yippee!

I knew I'd be up this week as it was my mum's birthday back at the weekend and we were all out for a lovely Italian meal. I was actually up 2 pounds but I've managed to reduce that to just the one now. It was worth it to go out and enjoy the meal and the company without thinking about my weight.

My first official weigh in since I joined you lot!

I had my appendix out 2 weeks ago and I saw my GP yesterday - she said I need to rest for another 2 weeks as there are still some problems that need to settle down. That's a bummer as I fear it means my weight will go backwards if I can't do my walking and pilates for a while. Well I will just have to cut down further on the food intake to compensate. (Yeah, right ).

Also I am in the process of weaning off BF to FF. I am a little afraid that the miraculous weight loss over the last 6 months is associated with BF. Did anyone notice a big change in weight when they stopped BF?

alicecrail · 21/05/2009 12:58

I didn't lose any weight whilst bf, only started to come off once i stopped.

Ponymum · 21/05/2009 13:06

Ohhh!! Well that's encouraging, alicerail. I hope I have the same experience as you.

caramelwaffle · 21/05/2009 13:43

Still the same. 12st 5lb. But to be honest I hav'nt really tried this week - no excersise (except massive house clearing) and eating whatever I want.

I do find however, as the house is getting clear of clutter and everything tidied away, I eat less. I think less clutter = less stress = less eating, so.....more time to finally get to the gym (that I am already paying for monthly)

"I shall be
