I've been lookinf around for the big day and you lot are a motivated bunch aren't you!

I'm not going on a frenzy before 2009, but know I won't make commitment beforehand.

Is there anyone else waiting for the new year?

If so, what method are you thinking of using?

Hello everyone.

On day three here and it is going quite well. Sticking to three healthy meals a day. Had fresh tuna with salad one night and made a huge lamb couscous dish containing tons of veg that has kept us going for three meals so far and is still going strong ... loads of lamb and very little meat so quite economical and dd loves it ...

Preparing some veg soup for freezer for lunches next week. And have also signed up for an organic fruit and veg box delivery so we will see how it goes. It's a bit pricey but have gps to eat up any leftovers plus will eat less red meat ...

The only thing I'm really finding difficult is cutting down on coffee (am ttc and also it plays havoc with your blood sugar levels apparently) ...

Here's some info on 5-a-day if anyone's interested:

www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publichealth/Healthimprovement/FiveADay/FiveADayGeneralInformation/DH_4001494

Was surprised to see that juice only counts once however many glasses you drink - also that dried pulses count for one portion a day (didn't think they would qualify as not "fresh" but there you go ...)

Wd be interesting to know if the five-a-day information is the same in France or Spain as in UK ...

1400 cals is fine. Its actually a good amount as you'll be able to lose weight steadily and won't feel too deprived.

Well done, Countingtheflocks. The first 3 days are always the hardest.

Well, day 1 of my LBD diet was really hard. Its quite a drastic change from all that over eating!
I'm afraid to say that I did not stick to it 100% and ended up eating some extras due to serious hunger pangs! It wasn't all bad as I only ended up having a chicken drumstick (no skin) and about 2 tablespoons of fruit crumble plus extra fruit to snack on.
I logged all my cals onto foodfocus and am still below my recommended cals.

I also went on a 30min v.brisk walk.

tibni · 03/01/2009 21:39

Well done Wintersun - good eating and exercise.

When I lost the 2 stone I used foodfocus and found it really useful. I am going to see how my general weight loss / exercise goes this time as I am now working part time so have less time and only really have a few pounds to lose and toning up to do.

Planning gym again tomorrow (as long as dd wants to go swimming to the family SEN swim with dh and ds,ASD)

mixedmama · 03/01/2009 21:41

Well done guys.... my day has been ok altho just ate 2 packs of crisps... I dont even like them that much but just cos they are in the house. No exercise today so planning some kind of marathon session tomorrow.

Summerfruit · 03/01/2009 21:41

Just been on the foodfocus website, and it looks great and so simple tu use...will also advise to use it !

bessiebighead · 04/01/2009 00:40

Great to see everyone's been busy! Been at MIL's (or is it M?sIL, pedants??) and checking in to keep me on the straight and narrow.

at Countingtheflocks ... I think the wheatgrass would definitely make the point!
That sassy water looks lovely and i have everything except the mint in already, so will definitely have some after my next shop. I think I may have missed something ? reading late at night? are you headed to France or Spain!?

OOh don't want to die of flu - that DM - always have our best interests at heart! Sorry to hear about your mobility restrictions, Riven. It must be incredibly frustrating, and well done on taking steps to counter its effects. The four mile walk is great! 5pm nibbles are tough. I go with the sliced kiwi fruit and a white tea. It hits the spot, for me.

Hello undervalued! I've read good things about lighterlife. Great job, making the change. Confidence is tricky, especially if you?ve been dealt a tough hand for a while. There's almost always a trade off though, so I'm sure you've done amazing things (though you don't recognise them yet) whilst putting your self to one side. Glad you?re on board!

I love the idea of the picture albums mixedmama and tessieb. Thanks for the tip. I keep all my photos on computer, so it's worth having something tangible printed up. It will be a nice job and an eye-opener going through all my old photofiles.

If I were an inch smaller then I could join the five-twos. Dh is 6?4? which makes portion sizes an issue for me, as I get fooled into eating the same amount as him. I?m pretty much where you are tessieb, and 9 stone seems a lifetime away at times. But it?s so heartening to hear that you?ve been there mixedmama and within the space of eight months, radically and sensibly changed.

Good work at the gym, tibni. It must feel good to feel your strength coming back. Glad to hear that the foodfocus site worked for you, as that?s my main guideline at the moment. It seems quite simple, but very useful. I had a look a the govt based change for life website, and it seemed a lot more of a faff to get started; though I?m sure it?s effective also.

Mixedmama, I?m going to go back and read your post from Saturday morning, tomorrow morning. It will get me moving! I think I?m going to drop hints to fam about the strictly dvd for my birthday. It?ll give them several months warning! Can you get rid of the crisps, especially since you don?t enjoy them, or are they for someone else in the house?

Lol at cannelloni beans, Wintersun. That?s quite a nice image. Good on you for the walk and staying under your cals, despite the wobble.

Did you go for a swim tessieb? I did what I could of an old yoga video, yesterday, and it was very tough, a sun salute combo completely knackered me ? but made me tingle all over by the end. Ds kept crawling under me in down dog. It amused him greatly.

MissisBoot, is the xmas cake finished yet? Get rid of it! Far too tempting! Do your neighbours need some? Your sea bass sounds very tasty, though!

And Hello hercules1, Silent Terror!

Wow long post, BBH! Hope you had a nice time at MILs.
How are you getting on?

Are we going to have a weigh in day?

My diet for today is

orange juice and melon for breakfast
soup, salad, baked sweet potato for lunch
vegetable and cauliflower bake for dinner

I'll try to do a walk or dvd today but dh has come down with flu so I'm trying to get everything done and look after him and kids today.

Summerfruit · 04/01/2009 09:52

I'm starting tomorrow (cant face starting today as it's sunday!) I'm not going to do any particular diet, only back to basic and control portion..and I'm going to try to make it as less boring as possible !

The hardest for me is watching the children eating their dinner (I'm a childminder) and resisting the temptation of finishing off their plates !

My starting weight is 11st7
My target weight is 9st8

bessiebighead · 04/01/2009 10:10

Yes, that was rather long. I'll try to keep things brief as it's a bit of a wade through!

MIL's was nice. I braved a pub lunch and went for a chicken salad. I didn't find out the cals etc, but think it was ok-ish. Didn't order any of the usual deserts. Back to Rosemary Conley today tho! And about to head out for long walk with ds.

Eek! Manflu. I don't envy you Wintersun! Hang in there today.

Should we make Mondays the weigh-in for those that want to?
I think quite a few people are starting tomorrow.

OP posts:
MissisBoot · 04/01/2009 11:51

Monday weigh in sound good to me.

I've had a good few days of healthy eating and was hoping to start RC's diet tomorrow but haven't got everything so am going to be making educated substitutes

Food plan for today is

Yoghurt
soup and fruit
roast chicken, veg and celeriac & parsnip mash

A neighbour is coming over this afternoon to help tuck into the cake - my will is going to be tested this afternoon though as dh is making rockyroad squares with dd!

tessieb · 04/01/2009 13:47

Hi everyone - you all seem to have made a very good start! It's lovely to hear how everyone is doing and it certainly helps get me motivated.

Bessiebighead - I didn't go swimming today. Instead, I put away the Christmas tree and all the decorations, then I've been giving the living room a good clean (especially places I couldn't get too for a few weeks due to the Christmas stuff). I've got a Davina dvd so think I will do that this afternoon.

I'm pleased with the start I've made. I'm not doing any particular diet as I find that often backfires on me as I think about food more - and for me they never last! I'm drinking lots of water (aiming for 2 litres a day), being aware of portion sizes and eating sensibly (though I'm not banning anything as it would only make me want it more!. I'm also aiming to exercise a lot more which isn't difficult as I do absolutely none at the moment! I'll try for 3 times a week at least.

Now the other big change, I'm starting to keep a food diary, logging what I eat, exercise, how I feel, progress I'm making etc. I hope that will help me to continue to be motivated and to keep going.

I'll let you know if the food/exercise diary idea works!

SilentTerror · 04/01/2009 14:15

Hello to all!
yesterday..porridge with skimmed milk
Poached egg on toast
Chicken curry and small amt rice(homemade)
1 glass white wine
1 Topic bar
Did 20 min fast walk in early evening though!

tessieb · 04/01/2009 14:20

SilentTerror - you've still got to have little treats occassionally - good for you. I'll still have the odd glass of wine and chocolate if I want to. It's the amount and frequency we all need to be aware of!

I want to make this a way of long-term healthy eating and don't want to be too restrictive and bann favourite things. Why is it that chocolate, wine, crisps etc are so high calorie?!!!!!

Welcome, kormaisforlife. It's just too easy for a few pounds (or more!) to creep on. Sorry to hear about your underactive thyroid - a friend of mine suffers with this and puts weight on easily. Are you taking any medication for it?

Good luck for Jan 8th!

glinda · 04/01/2009 14:48

Hi all, Can I join in? I need to lose 3 and a half stones . The full story is that I lost almost exactly the same amount last year and regained it! In fact, I do the same thing most years
Come on ladies help me make this year different.

Countingtheflocksbynight · 04/01/2009 14:48

Hi Bessie, WinterSun and thank you for the motivation everyone.

I logged on here feeling a bit down following a rare family outing to QuickBurger yesterday (continental equiv of McD's) (dh's idea) .. hate the salads and they are just as calorific so succumbed to a burger. We were on the way back from a drive and it was unplanned...Trying to make up for it today. Should have resisted harder. Still, determined not to let any failures put me off the long term goal this time.

Considered not posting this as bit of a howling error on day 3 of diet but whole point of this I guess is honesty with oneself and others ... so thanks for support.

Monday weigh-in sounds good to me too.

[Digression > Waves to Silent Terror from walking thread. Tessie b - don't want to hi-jack this thread (need as much motivation as possible from both!!!) but we are walking here if you or anyone else is interested ..
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/sports_and_exercise/674362-Anyone-interested-in-joining-a-power-walking-thread- for-New]

Summerfruit - eating one meal at tea time with dc followed by another at supper time with dh has been my downfall too. One tip (from here) is to only eat the dc's veg.

undervalued · 04/01/2009 14:56

Spot on Bessie, I feel you know me!! Thanks for your thoughtful comments.
You are all soooo motivated, makes a girl proud!
I have my first meeting on Thursday, so should start Friday. I am very excited, as if it's time for me to regain control - of my weight anyway You gotta start somewhwere....
Good luck all, picture your skinny selves....

tessieb · 04/01/2009 15:30

I've just done a 30 minute boxercise workout (Davina dvd). Feel pretty tired, but keep thinking of all the fat disappearing!!!!

Countingtheflocks - so, you had a burger - don't worry, these things happen. Well done for not letting it put you off your long term goal.

SilentTerror · 04/01/2009 15:47

Hi Counting!(waves)
Agree Tessie re the treats.I know if I cut portions abit and exercise more,I will be fine.
Am currently 10 stone 9 and need to be below 10,ideally 9.5 if possible, but would be happy with 9.8/9.9.
Am only 5ft 2 and petite except for big boobs so a few pounds shows, but don't want t o look haggard.

tessieb · 04/01/2009 16:35

I'm 5'2 as well, but am over a stone heavier than you - weighed in at 11 st 12 today! I really need to lose 2.5 to 3 stone!

Don't worry about the burger, Countingtheflocks. Don't let it demotivate you. You haven't ruined your diet. You could just eat a bit less and exercise a bit more for the next few days if you're worried about it

Well done on your workout tessieb! I have that dvd and find it quite good.

My day went as yesterday but minus the exercise

I was good with food though couldn't stick to that lbd diet 100%! Its darned hard on the weekends!

I had some extra chicken, fruit and a couple of dates.
2 dates are 133 cals I didn't know until after I ate them.

I didn't go over my allowance so thats good.

Good luck everyone for this week. Remember to drink lots of water, get as much sleep as possible and move more

Summerfruit · 04/01/2009 20:52

Cheers for the tip, coutingthflock, I shoul only have their vegs and a big glass of water to fill me up too ! What I'm dreading on giving up is the wine to be honest ..I like having a couple of glasses or 3 every evening..another of my downfall !

Someone suggested we should do weight in every mondays, I think it s good idea !

Good luck to every ladies who are starting tomorrow and to all the courageous who have already started !!!
