Will going from around 10st to 9st make a big difference?

Hi,

I’ve been on a weight loss journey. I’m 5ft 5, I started at 12st 9 and I am now 10st 3 so I’ve lost nearly 2 & a half stone. I was a 16 jeans size and now a 12.

I originally thought that if I got down to 9st I would love my body and look and feel slim but with just over one stone to go, I still have lots of fat to lose from my legs, stomach and arms (bingo wings) and I’m struggling to see that one stone will get rid of all of that!

Do you think it would? Will I see a dramatic difference in my body from 10st 3lbs to 9st? Or should I be aiming for closer to 8st?

I know about skinny fat and have just started at the gym this week to try and build some muscle to ‘tone up’ aswell as lose weight. Been doing strength training and a bit of cardio.

Is anyone 5ft 5 and around 9st? If so, what clothes size are you if you don’t mind me asking? I really wanted to order a load of new clothes for when I’m happy in my body but don’t know whether to go for size 10 or 8.

Thanks for any replies
xxx

I’m 5ft 4 and 8st 9. I prefer to be a few lbs lighter as my frame I small but I wear a size 8 top and 10 bottom.

If you don’t mind me asking, how were you eating / exercising to achieve that weight loss? And what age range are you in?

I'm late 40s and it's taken me 6 months. I've gone low carbs high protein, and generally reduced calories. Don't eat bread, pasta, rice any more. I do 7-10k steps a day and strength training a couple of times a week. There are really good Low carb Bootcamps on here if you are interested (meal suggestions etc)
Don't get me wrong, I'm still fat in places :-) I wouldn't say i have a great body, I need to tone more, but I can wear what I want and feel comfortable

Sdpbody · 03/08/2025 20:43

I’m 5ft4 and 10s2.

I look unwell at 9 stone as my bum and hips are always larger so it mainly goes from my arms, shoulders and face so look quite gaunt.

How low-carb are you @YourFairCyanReader? Eating below a specific number or just avoiding the white stuff? I’m avoiding bread, pasta etc but don’t know if it’s enough to make a difference or if I need to actually go keto.

KPPlumbing · 04/08/2025 07:45

I'm 5ft4 and was once briefly 10st4 and felt chubby. Whereas at 9st I'm a slim size 8/10.

Yes, you'll see a big difference losing that extra weight.

I have also lost some weight this year (just 1/2 a stone, taking me down to 8st9, but Ive gained muscle, and have lost a significant amount of fat).
Ive also eaten "low carb", by which I mean barely any bread, pasta, white potato or white rice.
I eat a bit of brown rice, quinoa, bulgur wheat and sweet potato. I also eat porridge, chia seeds and lots of veg and salad to make sure I get enough fibre. I then make sure I hit my protein goals of 1g of protein for every 1lb of my body weight.

This thread is fascinating just to illustrate how utterly different we all are. Everyone has a different build and their bodies distribute fat in different ways. Everyone is happy at a different weights. I’m 5’4” and 11st 12lbs if I were to go down to 9 stone I would look properly ill. I’m currently above my top bmi (floating around 28) and feel great, doing weight training etc. But even 25 years ago pre peri I had to fight my body to get down to a bmi of 25 (10 st 12) and I was a size 12 (very briefly). But I’m not at all slight or slender. Go for what works for you OP.

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 04/08/2025 08:37

I was 10 stone 7 post partum and got back to 8 stone 7.

Took me from a size 12 jeans to 8-10 depending on the style. 8 for mom jeans and 10 for skinny styles.

Even at that weight though I'm not toned and still have fat around my middle and knees. I'm 5ft 4

childofthe607080s · 04/08/2025 08:49

9.5 is my sweet spot that is quite easy to be stable at , leaves me with plenty of energy , I try and fail to focus on weight training but do get plenty of exercise

despite being lighter and I think more toned than you I am buying size 10 or 12 (tops) as a rule but I don’t like tight fits

january1244 · 04/08/2025 08:53

This thread is spurring me on! I’m 10 stone, 5 foot 6. I am an 8-10, but look chubby around the middle and arms and face. I’d like to get back to my weight pre second baby, which is about 9 stone 6. At that weight I’m a 6-8, and feel it’s a good weight for me. Glad to see there’s a few of us in the same boat, just trying to get those last few lbs off, and that it will make a difference!

I’m doing the high fibre plan, lots (and lots) of veg, and lots of whole grains, seeds, wild rice etc. I’ve lost 3 stone, but seem to be making some bad choices now through tiredness, like a glass of wine in the evening, picking at crisps, eating a pudding etc. little treats each day that add up that I should be cutting out. Anyone have any tips how to stop this?

I just dont eat any bread, pasta, rice, potatoes. Not any biscuits or cakes obviously either. But when I stopped eating carbs with meals, it seemed to reset me and I no longer crave them. I used to have toast then want more, feel tired and want pizza etc- It's easy now as I don't particularly want them.
It's quite easy at home if you have e.g. bolognaise sauce or chicken curry with veg where everyone else has pasta and rice.
The low carbon boot camp threads on here are good - when you do that for a month you cut out even fruit initially, so you really are not having any sugar.
I don't go hungry, three meals a day, lose a pound or two a week.

HostaCentral · 04/08/2025 09:14

At 5'5" my ideal weight would be just above 10 stone! I am currently 11 3, and have been for some time, but post meno went up to 11 11, which was too much. Lost a bit recently by just watching what I eat. Clothes are consistently 10/12. My main issue is massive tits, and belly fat. I need to start weights.

Weird isn't it, different body composition. If I went down to 9 something, I would be gaunt and underweight, and probably go wrinkly!! As you get older, I think a bit of extra weight is actually preferable.

Thank you, that’s exactly what I’m doing so fingers crossed it works as well for me 🤞

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 04/08/2025 10:39

@HostaCentral I'm the same height as you and currently 9stone 8lbs. There's no way I'd fit into size 10 clothes. My boobs are far too big! I need to lose at least another half stone to be at a comfortable weight for me.

ETA: I think lots of people on here must be very toned. One poster is 5'6" tall and is a size 6 at the same weight as me! I can't believe an inch of height would make that much difference, so she must be extremely toned/pure muscle

HostaCentral · 04/08/2025 12:47

@AnnaQuayInTheUk This illustrated the body composition entirely though. I am a 32HH boobage probably accounting for some 1/2 stone in weight. My legs and bum, non existent. So tops can be anything from size 10 to size 16 depending on stretch or drape. Bottoms size 10 to 12.

My frame is small, small bones, bit I do have excess fat, but it's also not firm fat, so squishes in a lot 😅. Also shirring is my friend.

So, I'll stick to my goal of 10 3, where I was slim, but still curvy.

Spottyfish · 04/08/2025 13:15

I need to be 9st for a size 10 to fit. I’m a 12 or 14 at 9st 9.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 04/08/2025 13:30

@HostaCentral it sounds as though you know exactly what weight suits you best. Unfortunately I still haven't got to mine! Or maybe I have but didn't realise it. I'm 58 and am worried about looking too gaunt/old if I lose too much weight.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 04/08/2025 13:30

Spottyfish · 04/08/2025 13:15

I need to be 9st for a size 10 to fit. I’m a 12 or 14 at 9st 9.

doggydaft · 04/08/2025 13:53

I'm 5 ft 4 and weigh 9st. I wear a size 10 top and generally an 8 in trousers, sometimes a 6 if m&s or next.
At 10ish stone I was a solid size 12 so that last stone made a big difference to my size.
I'm 53 and have big boobs (30H) but am quite small waisted, I do have a round tummy though. Have always had that even as a much younger woman.
9st seems to be my sweet spot as I went as low as 8st and looked gaunt, bony and quite unwell.

Boohoo76 · 04/08/2025 17:55

I’m fitting into size 10 denim shorts at 10.13. For dresses it depends on whether they have any stretch as I have a big rib cage. If they have some give, I wear a 10. If not, I need a 12.

henlake7 · 04/08/2025 18:34

Alot depends on your frame, body composition and fitness level.
I'm also 5'5 and am currently 10st but I know I feel and look better at 9.7 at least. I have abit of middle aged spread going on and that only seems to shift once i hit 9st something.
I'm aiming for 9 st just to see but TBH I can get into size 8/10s as I exercise alot so im happy with that.
(A couple of years ago I was 17 st and a size 22 so I'm just grateful to be where I am!).

JanetSnakeholeMacklin · 07/08/2025 07:03

So glad I found this thread. I'm 5ft 4, 10 and a half stone and a size 8-10. I've recently lost a lot of weight and wanted to lose one last stone to get to 9.5 but it doesn't want to shift! I've barely lost anything in the past 2 months. I work out a lot and do martial arts as well, but I still have too much fat, especially on my upper arms, thighs etc. I also have a lot of muscle, which probably explains why I'm not a bigger size, but it helps to know that one more stone will make a big difference.

Gripejuice01 · 07/08/2025 07:21

That last half stone is often tough to shift. Low carb and high protein is the way to go.

MumOf4totstoteens · 07/08/2025 11:56

I’m 5ft 2 gone from 11 stone 8 lbs to 10.12 I’d like to be around 9.7 I think the issue is when you get close to your goal, you need to work out. When I used to train a lot, I’d loose like 6lbs fat but gain 3lbs muscle so really only 3lbs loss but I’d look COMPLETELY different
