Will going from around 10st to 9st make a big difference?

Hi,

I’ve been on a weight loss journey. I’m 5ft 5, I started at 12st 9 and I am now 10st 3 so I’ve lost nearly 2 & a half stone. I was a 16 jeans size and now a 12.

I originally thought that if I got down to 9st I would love my body and look and feel slim but with just over one stone to go, I still have lots of fat to lose from my legs, stomach and arms (bingo wings) and I’m struggling to see that one stone will get rid of all of that!

Do you think it would? Will I see a dramatic difference in my body from 10st 3lbs to 9st? Or should I be aiming for closer to 8st?

I know about skinny fat and have just started at the gym this week to try and build some muscle to ‘tone up’ aswell as lose weight. Been doing strength training and a bit of cardio.

Is anyone 5ft 5 and around 9st? If so, what clothes size are you if you don’t mind me asking? I really wanted to order a load of new clothes for when I’m happy in my body but don’t know whether to go for size 10 or 8.

Thanks for any replies
xxx

Weight loss looks so different on everyone and sorry to break it to you but you might never be 100% happy with your body.

I’ve been a size 4 all the way to size 14 and where I feel more “at peace” is size 10. I’ve always hated my legs as I’ve got muscular calves and in an ideal world I wanted long skinny legs. I’ve realised I’ll never have that as even at a size 4 my legs looked disproportionately bigger compared to my upper body which frankly looked skeletal at that point. My legs were still chunky in comparison.

Ive made peace with my body now and know how to work on my good bits and workaround my not so good bits. I’m 5ft 5 and size 10 and weigh 9 stone 9lbs. I’m ok with this weight and have a relatively flat tummy, slim arms, face but my legs are still chunkier than I’d like but that’s the way it is as I’ll never have long legs 🤣

What did help me to make more peace with my body shape is that when I started working out I started to look toned instead esp my legs that respond very quickly to exercise so my legs don’t look fat but just muscular these days.

Also some people just look different at different weights even the same height. My SIL must be at least 10kg lighter than me and is the same height as me and doesn’t look skeletal. When I was her weight I looked malnourished and boney. She still looks very healthy at that weight.

RayKitty · 03/08/2025 16:15

I’m the same height as you and have ranged from 11 stone to 7.5 stone. I feel best at around 8.5 stone, I’m a size 6-8. It does depend on what percentage of fat and muscle you are though as to how you’ll look at that weight.

PinkCrab · 03/08/2025 16:15

I’m 5ft5 and 9st10 and wear a size 8. Going from 10st4 (when I worse size 10/12) to this made an enormous difference. I’ve previously been 9st6 and can’t imagine I’d have been comfortable another half stone lighter again, I think I would have been about size 6 at that point and started to look a bit gaunt. But I do a lot of weightlifting and running so my body type reflects that somewhat.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 03/08/2025 16:18

As someone who is 5 foot 4 and goes between the two fairly frequently- yes, you’ll notice a massive difference.

YourUglySister · 03/08/2025 16:30

I’m your height and weigh around 8 stone 12 but looked my best at 8 stone 5. Lots of people will eye roll but at this kind of size even half a stone makes a big difference to how you look and feel. I exercise a lot but also work a lot of hours on shifts so sleep is an issue and I haven’t been taking care of my diet lately so need to get back on top of it.

Fundays12 · 03/08/2025 16:32

I am 5ft 5 and and currently have at about 10st 3 and look and feel flabby. I plan to get back to 9st 4 as the difference in how I look and feel is amazing.

HexagonSun · 03/08/2025 16:33

I’m 5’4 and 10.2 stone. I used to always be around 8.5/ 9 stone before I was pregnant (3 years ago).
I still fit 90% of the same clothes and my waist hasn’t changed much because I don’t really store fat on my stomach, which is just a genetic factor, so I don’t think I’m noticably much bigger. I do have much bigger thighs now.
I don’t mind how I look now, but the ~1stone of extra weight makes a huge difference to how I feel, when I move I hate that I feel so much slower and heavier. Maybe because most of the weight is on my legs! I would love to get back to around 9 stone just to feel stronger and lighter.

I think if you want to, then it’s worth sticking with your 9stone goal, as long as it isn’t at odds with your mental and physical health.

Edited to say at 8.5stone I’m a size 10, and at 10.2stone I’m a 10/12. So really not much in it clothing wise for me.

pitterypattery00 · 03/08/2025 16:33

I'm 1cm taller than you. My 'normal' is around 9.5 stone, which for me is around size 10/12. At my lightest as an adult I was around 9 stone and a small size 10. But that weight just isn't sustainable for me (was a result of a hugely stressful period in my life). Currently I'd estimate I'm over 10.5 stone - haven't weighed myself but am definitely the heaviest and fattest I've ever been in my life. My body is very different to how it looks at 9.5. Want to lose that stone, but no aspirations to be lower than that.

Fuzzymuddle33 · 03/08/2025 16:35

I’m 5ft 4 and all my adult life was around 9 stones and very happy with that.

i crept to 9st 7lbs and was still fairly happy

im now 10 st 5lbs despite eating healthy and exercising 3 to 4 times a week (always done tbat) and I feel very wobbly

in 48 years old so blame the menopause but would love to get back to 9st 7lbs so yes tbat stone will make a massive differnce

i carry the weight in my thighs and arms so it’s noticeable on me … sometimes wish I carried it around my middle!!

Liliwen · 03/08/2025 16:37

I’m 5 foot 4 and 8.5 stone. I was 9.5 stone but lost a stone before the summer. It’s made a huge difference for me. I would say 10 stone to 9 stone will look very different for you too.

I still have a flabby belly though. I just wear high waisted stuff. I’m almost 40 and have had 2 kids and think it’s prob there for life. Maybe it would be better if I lifted weights but I cba

Wexone · 03/08/2025 16:37

same height as you currently hoovering around the 10 stone mark. to get to 9 stone 6 lbs makes a huge difference for me. my clothes fit better I am not bloated as much. it drives me wrong when I hit the 10 stone mark. I will make an effort to drop by Xmas

Mountainviewatsunset · 03/08/2025 16:53

I’m 5’5 and I look my best at 9 stone. Anything lower actually looks too thin. Was a size 6-8 at that weight.

but it’s tricky to judge weight. Im closer to 10 stone now and a size 10. Have a bit of a menopausal paunch but otherwise toned. While I want to lose the weight ( which is menopause related) I still look good.

I am quite muscly though, which maybe makes me heavier.

however I know people about my height who are 9 stone, and they feel overweight!

Spottyfish · 03/08/2025 16:54

Hello fellow 5ft 5”, 9-10 stoners. I am quite chubby at 10st, by 9st 8 my face is slimmer, my collar bones and arms look more defined.

By 9st 4 my bum and boobs are starting to shrink. Ideally I’d like to be around 9st6. A size 12 fits me loosely and I feel slim. The difference between 9st and 10st is massive for me.

Unfortunately middle age is constantly trying to push me above 10st.

girljulian · 03/08/2025 16:55

It will make a big difference. My “normal weight” is 10 st 7, ie my body needs loads of convincing to get lower than that. I’m a size 10-12 at that weight (5’5). My lowest adult weight, when I was 21 and had an eating disorder, was 9st 1. I looked terrible — my head looked too big for my body, I was incredibly skinny everywhere except that my arms still looked the same as they do at 10 st 7. Bodies are weird!

TheShyMumX · 03/08/2025 16:56

I wouldn’t even contemplate actual weight. I’m 5’3 I weighed about 12 stone (77kg) and I was a size 12 I now weigh 9st9lb (61kg) and my size 12 still fit albeit a bit loose and baggy on my arse now that’s disappeared! And I gave brought some size 10 clothes that do fit but I wouldn’t say are the most comfortable
at 12st I wouldn’t say I looked fat but I definitely look skinnier now. Honestly I’m surprised I’ve lost as much as I have and don’t particularly look any different, I think everybody just carries weight differently

TipsyPeachSnake · 03/08/2025 16:56

YourFairCyanReader · 02/08/2025 09:21

Massove well done on your weight loss!

I lost 2 stones and am now 9st, similar height to you. I'm now a size 8 and feel confident wearing anything really. I'm just in the process of buying new clothes, swimwear, bras etc, chucking away old ones, and determined to maintain this weight.

If you don’t mind me asking, how were you eating / exercising to achieve that weight loss? And what age range are you in?

Theteenandme · 03/08/2025 17:00

Another one saying yes. Im 5'3". I felt healthiest when I was about 9 and a half. Going down to under 9 would have been small for me.

I didnt get rid of the bingo wings though because I wasnt exercising.

TipsyPeachSnake · 03/08/2025 17:01

Liliwen
I’m 5 foot 4 and 8.5 stone. I was 9.5 stone but lost a stone before the summer. It’s made a huge difference for me.

@Liliwen How? What did you do differently on a daily basis?

BUMCHEESE · 03/08/2025 17:03

I'm a similar height and 9st, I'm a large 8 or small 10. The only annoying thing is size 10 is often a bit big and 8 too small. Depending on the shop.

I feel flabby at the moment as not doing any exercise and I'm putting weight on my tummy. 18 months ago I was 8'6 and more toned and I loved that, felt really good. BUT my boobs were absolutely shit! And I would be fine at my current weight if I was more toned.

Antigonestoyspade · 03/08/2025 17:03

Well done on your weight loss @Sparkles100000 !

I'm between 5ft 5in and 5ft 6in and am just under 9st (generally between 8st 12lb and 9st), which is ideal for me. I have been nearer 10st and agree with PPs that it makes a huge difference. At the weight I am now, I'm a size 6-8 and I can wear pretty much anything and feel/look amazing. I'd obviously never say that IRL but am saying it here as encouragement!

Good luck!

TipsyPeachSnake · 03/08/2025 17:06

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 02/08/2025 10:57

I'm 5'5" and have gone from just under 12 stone at the beginning of the year to 9stone 8. I still have bingo wings and bags on my inner thighs. I suspect they will stay even if I got down to 9 stone.

I'm 58 and I think that makes a huge difference. I used to be able to lose weight and tone up at the same time. Now, post menopause, no matter what I do with toning, cardio etc, I can't get a toned body.

Are you on or ever used HRT? I’m around same age and just joined a gym hoping to tone up, why is it so difficult?

pinkbackground · 03/08/2025 17:06

I’m 5ft 6 and I’ve gone from 14 stone to 9 and a half stone. I still have plenty of wobbly bits and that’s to do with toning (or a lack of it!), rather than weight loss. I feel better though so I’d say go for it and see how you feel.

brogueish · 03/08/2025 17:07

Yes it will make a difference. I’m 5’4 and a half and look and feel my best between 8.5-9 stone. Below 8 I look gaunt. I’m currently 9.5 stone and feel quite doughy. Exercise makes a big difference though too.

Keydaff4 · 03/08/2025 17:11

I’m 5’4 and 10 stone (140lb) I got down to 132lb at the end of last year just naturally from running 2/3 times a week. But I got injured and now just go to the gym for weight training twice a week. I think i was beginning to look too gaunt at 132lb although felt great/fine. I think my natural weight is 140lb as I weighed this before I had a child and feel better than ever just going to the gym and intuitive eating.

Now I’m getting super toned and still have some curves. I’m a size 10 bottom and 8 top. At 132lb I was a 6/8 bottom and 8 top

I think you could work hard to loose weight and get to 9 stone but it would just creep back on to your natural weight. Get to a point where you are comfortable in what you are eating/not worrying about what you are eating and enjoying working out

LarryUnderwood · 03/08/2025 17:14

I've been on a similar weight loss journey to you OP. 5'5", was around 12st 3-4, now around 10st 3-4. My happiest weight was when I was around 9st BUT I was in my late 20s and now I am late 40s. For that reason I'm aiming for about 9st10 as my goal weight as I think my skin will not be as 'bouncy' if I lose more than that. Size wise though, the lighter I am the more difference a small amount of weight makes. Going from 12st to 11st didn't seem to do anything except make my jeans less tight. Then from 11 to 10st4, suddenly I had to buy new clothes as everything was hanging off me. I'm a solid size 12 now, 14 top if something is fitted as I have large boobs. I know that at 9st I was size 8 bottom and 10-12 top (and that's 2000s Topshop sizing not 2020s M&S 🤣.). Much as I would love to be that again, I think it would age me.
