Will going from around 10st to 9st make a big difference?

Hi,

I’ve been on a weight loss journey. I’m 5ft 5, I started at 12st 9 and I am now 10st 3 so I’ve lost nearly 2 & a half stone. I was a 16 jeans size and now a 12.

I originally thought that if I got down to 9st I would love my body and look and feel slim but with just over one stone to go, I still have lots of fat to lose from my legs, stomach and arms (bingo wings) and I’m struggling to see that one stone will get rid of all of that!

Do you think it would? Will I see a dramatic difference in my body from 10st 3lbs to 9st? Or should I be aiming for closer to 8st?

I know about skinny fat and have just started at the gym this week to try and build some muscle to ‘tone up’ aswell as lose weight. Been doing strength training and a bit of cardio.

Is anyone 5ft 5 and around 9st? If so, what clothes size are you if you don’t mind me asking? I really wanted to order a load of new clothes for when I’m happy in my body but don’t know whether to go for size 10 or 8.

Thanks for any replies
xxx

I’m 5”4 and started the year at 14stone, I’m now 11.5 stone and the last half a stone seems to have made the most difference so I’m expect the next two stone to be a big difference 🤞

5128gap · 03/08/2025 17:17

I'm 5' 4.5". Currently 8 stone 11, size variable as I have a 24" inch waist and 37" hips and bust. At 10 stone 3 I was a size 12, with waist of 29 inches. So for me, the extra loss has meant losing belly fat, the most dangerous type, so big health plus. I also look much better and can wear what I want without worrying about trying to hide my midriff roll and protruding lower stomach.

Pressthespacebar · 03/08/2025 17:18

It did for me, even from 10 stone to 9 and a half was a massive difference, it’s like the last stone was all on my belly 😂

JLou08 · 03/08/2025 17:19

I've been at both weights, I'm also the same height. It's a big difference, I was very slim at 9st. I was wearing size 8-10.

Ontheedgeofit · 03/08/2025 17:23

I think you will notice the difference but depending on how much loose skin you are talking about you may have to come to terms with that. You can build muscle to ‘fill it’ but you may have to bulk up a lot for that to happen. Good luck.

stitchy · 03/08/2025 17:26

It's hard to say because people 'wear' weight so differently. I am 5ft 5in too but at 9st and below I start to look ill, my head looks too big for my body.

I am about 10st 1 now which I'm happy with but would like the purely psychological boost of being under 10st. I run a couple of times a week and am happy to aim for strong and healthy and if that's 10st I'm OK with it (but 9st 8lbs would be my ideal)

Boohoo76 · 03/08/2025 17:29

I’m 5.4. I was 12.13 and a size 12/14. I’m now 10.13 and a size 10/12. I don’t want to go lower than 10 stone as I think I look better at a size 10. At 9 stone I would be an 8 and that is too skinny for me.

spoonbillstretford · 03/08/2025 17:29

Well done on your weight loss. Just by contrast as someone who has always done weights and cardio, I've lost two stone and am just at the top end of the healthy BMI range for 5'7" which is 11st 6lbs. My goal is 11st and I'll see how I feel, I don't have bingo wings or loose skin, am in size 10 clothes comfortably now, my height to waist ratio is 0.44 (between 0.4 and 0.5 is healthy). Not bad for 49.

TheHandmaidsSnail · 03/08/2025 17:29

Yes it will make a big difference, good luck if you decide to go for it

HeyWiggle · 03/08/2025 17:31

I’m the same night and heading for 9 stone 3 as I look a bit gaunt below that

spoonbillstretford · 03/08/2025 17:32

And while I was lighter in my 20s before I had kids, I was typically this weight aged 16-19. To get there again at last 30 years later after many years of trying to get near normal BMI feels amazing.

Hellohelga · 03/08/2025 17:33

OP how old are you? I’m late 50s and although my bmi in lower part of healthy range and I go to the gym regularly, I still have flabby bits that resist toning up. Legs and arms have improved but thighs, bottom and belly are still a bit flabby. I look ok with clothes on but naked I’ve got a definitely mum bod.

FebruaryUsername · 03/08/2025 17:36

Your body composition makes a huge difference to your size. I'm 5'5 and 10st, and typically I wear a size 8 (or a 10 at most), however I have a reasonable amount of muscle and lowish body fat percentage. There is a huge difference between a 'skinny fat' 10st and a lean 9st.
Well done on the weight loss, keep it up!

Tinytimmy123 · 03/08/2025 17:41

For those of you who are struggling with losing (particularly) lower body fat...thighs, knees, ankles (cankles, fat below knees) but also sometimes upper body and arm fat ...consider if you have lipoedema (lipedema for USA). It is suggested 10% of women have it, but due to the poor recognition of womens health complaints it is really only getting the recognition it deserves now, so the numbers may be alot higher.

Not to be confused with Lymphoedema but can in extreme cases be a comorbidity to Lipoedema.

It can be exacerbated by significant hormonal change eg puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Whilst it can lead to extreme deformity this isnt always the case but people report that difficulty losing weight, easy to bruise, fluid accumulation and poor muscle definition are some of the symptoms.

Thankfully theres loads of info out there now, Google search, youtube videos and lots on tiktok will be more informative.

Mammut · 03/08/2025 17:46

I’m 5 5 and went from 10 to 9 stone. I’m mall built but have short arms and legs. I wear a size 8 and look very slim.

Outside9 · 03/08/2025 17:47

In short, very much so!

Waunder · 03/08/2025 17:51

I’m 5’4 and have gone from just under 11 stone and hovering between 7 stone 12 and 8 stone, I noticed it more after getting under 9 stone. I have had to up my calories a bit now because my family are giving me grief for losing weight. I do strength train 5 x a week though and walk around 6-8 miles a day so have retained quite a bit of muscle. Get walking and do some pilates or strength training, you could stay at the same weight but look completely different when lifting weights

TennisLady · 02/08/2025 09:01

I’m 5ft 5 and I’m usually around 10 - 10st 2, I work out a lot including weight lifting and I’m 8 on top and 10 on bottom so probably depends on your body composition.

I'm same height and was 10 st 2lbs for years (sadly not anymore but I'm working on it!) And I was a size 12 top AND bottom! Never got anywhere near a size 10 bottom. Definitely body composition i.e. muscle mass/bone density etc plays a part.

BurBurBarBar · 03/08/2025 17:58

I wouldn't go mad ordering clothes until your weight has settled! Ive lost 5 stone - about a third of my bodyweight - through making big lifestyle changes. I hadnt actually intended or thought it was possible for me to lose this much, but I found a new fitness and eating routine that I enjoyed and lost more than I thought I would.

I used to be an 18 or so depending on shop, then was a 16, then got a load of size 14 clothes last summer and winter thinking I would get any smaller. They are now hanging off me and I am in the process of replacing them with size 12s, in some cases buying the same clothes but smaller off Vinted.

TheBlueRobin · 03/08/2025 18:06

Interesting reading. I'm 5ft 4 and started at 85kg, now at 75kg with the aim of getting to 66kg (about 10.5 stone ish) as I remember feeling good at that weight. Currently a 14/16 and want to get to a 12 if I can.

I thought after losing 10kg I'd feel a lot different and clothes do feel loser but makes me realise how much my body tolerated to begin with as I still don't feel that great.

My Mum was a similar height and struggled to get above 9 stone and looked very gaunt as she got older.

MrsSunshine2b · 03/08/2025 18:11

I'm 5'3" was 10st 1, now 9st 8, and aiming for 8st 7.

Pre-pregnancy I was 7st 12, my body has changed and that would be too thin now.

Sparkles100000 · 03/08/2025 18:19

I’m the OP. I’ve just read through all of these replies. WOW! I didn’t expect so many people answering me. Thank you so much. It seems the majority of people definitely think 10st to 9st will be a big difference. It’s really spurred me on the get that last stone off!!

Im 41 for peoples who’s asked. I have in the past been slim but I didn’t have proper digital scales then, so not sure really what I weighed.

Im definitely going to be focusing more on clothes fitting rather than scales especially now I’ve started the gym.

Keep the replies coming though! I love to see other people’s weights, heights and clothes size as well as people’s weight loss.

Someone also asked how I’d lost weight. I’m on weight loss injection Mounjaro which I pay for myself through an online pharmacy and I’m calorie counting and doing lots of walking plus now started the gym xxx

Liliwen
I’m 5 foot 4 and 8.5 stone. I was 9.5 stone but lost a stone before the summer. It’s made a huge difference for me.

@Liliwen How? What did you do differently on a daily basis?

I ate less food. I didn’t really hit the gym but I would like to because I feel a bit scrawny and Im not strong at all. I did do a lot of steps - walking and running.

Thisaintascene1 · 03/08/2025 18:24

It’s hard to say because everyone is different. I am 165cm and currently 100kg but feel my best about 80-85kg. I am a size 14 at that weight usually, currently a size 18. I train for on average 8-9 hours a week, do around 9k steps a day and compete in Olympic weightlifting, but also ran two half marathons last year. I am technically/BMI obese but have been technically overweight almost my whole life - I have a broad frame, 36G boobs that I’ve had since high school and massive (bony even at this weight) hips. I am an hour glass shape and most clothing in my size I have to get tailored in at the waist. At my lowest adult weight of 65kg, finally in the healthy weight range, I look so unwell looking back at photos and I felt horrendous (tired, weak) at the time, and my hair was falling out despite always tracking my nutrition (as I do now too). I was in size 10 jeans at that point at that weight. I am working to get back to the 80-85kg at the moment, but I have thyroid issues and it’s hard, but I know I am too heavy even for me and I can feel it as I’ve got older. But just wanted to share the perspective of someone that is heavier but is fit and active (BMI doesn’t mean much for those of us with muscle and with boobs!).

OP, weight training is incredibly beneficial for mental and physical health, but you also might see the scale go up as you gain muscle. Many people do and that’s okay. Muscle and fat weigh the same but muscle takes up less room, so you may feel better in yourself. I encourage everyone to focus on what your body can do and how it performs rather than how it looks.

RB68 · 03/08/2025 18:36

SOunds like you need to work on toning up rather than weight loss for the forseeable - bingo wings and fatter legs will trim if you are young enough and do the work. If you are older they are unlikely to go away without surgery on say belly or arms. I am currently down just over 4stone and I know these things are not going to change
