Will going from around 10st to 9st make a big difference?

Hi,

I’ve been on a weight loss journey. I’m 5ft 5, I started at 12st 9 and I am now 10st 3 so I’ve lost nearly 2 & a half stone. I was a 16 jeans size and now a 12.

I originally thought that if I got down to 9st I would love my body and look and feel slim but with just over one stone to go, I still have lots of fat to lose from my legs, stomach and arms (bingo wings) and I’m struggling to see that one stone will get rid of all of that!

Do you think it would? Will I see a dramatic difference in my body from 10st 3lbs to 9st? Or should I be aiming for closer to 8st?

I know about skinny fat and have just started at the gym this week to try and build some muscle to ‘tone up’ aswell as lose weight. Been doing strength training and a bit of cardio.

Is anyone 5ft 5 and around 9st? If so, what clothes size are you if you don’t mind me asking? I really wanted to order a load of new clothes for when I’m happy in my body but don’t know whether to go for size 10 or 8.

Thanks for any replies
xxx

I think it’s true that some people have heavy bones. I remember when my kids were little the girl was a million times heavier to lift that the boy but visibly they looked the same weight

Mumofoneandone · 02/08/2025 10:06

It will make a difference. I'm your height and just shy of 11st. My weight gain is health related, so need to try and loose it, but it's really hard as I can't exercise. It feels really uncomfortable, especially as I'm carrying the extra weight round my chest/tummy area.
Depending on the company, I'm usually a 10 or 12 in rtw. I wear a lot of dresses as they are more comfortable and I think flattering on my figure.
Edited to say, well done on your weight loss so far. I would very much look at weight loss as being about health and feeling better, rather than about fitting a certain dress size.

MostlyGhostly · 02/08/2025 10:13

I’m 5’5 and 10 stone, carrying all my weight around my middle, with skinny legs and arms. really want to get to 9 stone as my body shape means that I struggle to get clothes to fit, but just can’t stick to anything that works. I’d much prefer to be 9 stone and I think would feel a lot better. Before I hit early 40s I was always 8-8 and a half stone and looked so much better/ healthier, 10 years on it seems like an impossibility to get anywhere near that.

bluebunnyjacket · 02/08/2025 10:52

I have found my people! I am currently 10 stone 1lb and I feel disgusting. I am happiest at 9 stone but I seem to settle around 9 stone 6 naturally (if I'm not eating like a pig as I have been recently).

There is a huge difference in my body between 9 stone and 10 stone,

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 02/08/2025 10:57

I'm 5'5" and have gone from just under 12 stone at the beginning of the year to 9stone 8. I still have bingo wings and bags on my inner thighs. I suspect they will stay even if I got down to 9 stone.

I'm 58 and I think that makes a huge difference. I used to be able to lose weight and tone up at the same time. Now, post menopause, no matter what I do with toning, cardio etc, I can't get a toned body.

TheAmusedQuail · 02/08/2025 11:02

I got down to just under 10 stone from my previous lowest weight of 11 stone. (My aim was to get below 10, just... because I'd never managed it before).

At just under 10 stone, I was too gaunt. Yes, I got rid of all my tummy fat, but my face, neck and legs were scrawny.

I've now put a stone back on (I know, I know) and am going to have to diet (Mounjaro) it off again. But I think on reflection, half way between the 2 is better. Enough to not be haggard, but also to reduce tummy fat a bit.

I think a lot of it depends on your age. At 25, being your lowest weight might be good (although I had a very long horsey looking face at 25 when I was slim) but as we age, it isn't as flattering.

MistressRoydon · 02/08/2025 12:16

Congratulations on a great weight loss - you must feel so much more comfortable on the hot summer months. I agree with posters about age being a factor- 30 years ago I got down to 9 stone 2 at 5 foot 4 and felt fantastic but wasn’t fit or toned so now when I look back on photos I didn’t look that great in a bikini - yo-yo dieter since the. with intermittent big losses and now post MJ 9.12 down from 12 stone 5. I have decided not to go any lower because I’m older and the saggy bits are noticeable- any lower and I think my face will really be compromised. But as I now exercise a lot my abs and waist are noticeably better than when I was 9 stone 2. Go to where you feel
most comfortable !

HansHolbein · 02/08/2025 13:01

I’m just under 5’5 and I’m 8st. My goal was 10.6, still flabby, then 9, not quite right. 8 is perfect for me.

Blondebrownorred · 02/08/2025 13:11

I'm 5ft 4.5 and weigh 9 stone 9. I'm size 8 with abs. I'm a powerlifter though so have a lot of muscle. I also run and do pilates. I wouldn't want to weigh 9 stone.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 02/08/2025 13:15

I'm 5"4 and feel best at 8 stone. It makes a difference losing another stone.

Gripejuice01 · 02/08/2025 18:27

I’m in my sixties. I maintain my weight of nine stone by eating low carb, tons of lean protein, fruit and veg. I don’t starve myself, have treats ccasionally but not always. It’s a way of life now really.

NewbieYou · 02/08/2025 19:12

At 9st I’m a slim size 8. At 10st 3 I look chubby. I am 5’4.

somewhereintheworld · 02/08/2025 08:30

I was about 10st 5lbs and have gone down to 9st. The difference is phenomenal and for the first time in years I feel really slim and pleased with my body. I had to buy a whole new wardrobe because nothing fitted me any more as well which was great! So I say yes getting to 9st will make a huge difference to you.

I love this! And well done on your weight loss! Xxx

It definitely depends on your body composition. I'm 5'5 and woul probably need to amputate a limb to weigh less than 10st 7. I'm a size 12 at 11st 10 and just seem to weigh really heavy. My dad was the same.

Girlintheframe · 03/08/2025 08:24

I’m 5 foot 5 and sit around 9stone 4. At a stone heavier it is a big difference on me. However I still have a lot of fat especially around my abdomen. I was going to the gym for around a year (4 xs a week) and lifting heavy but circumstances have forced me to stop for now. I did see some changes but nothing massively significant but I felt so much better going. That may be because I’m post menopause and struggle to gain muscle. In clothes I look slim but naked I’m far from my ideal. It really is all about body composition

Sedgwick · 03/08/2025 12:58

I think another stone will make the difference you are hoping for. I am 5ft 5 and feel slim at 8st 12. At this weight my waist is 29 inches. I am late 50s. My tummy is the last thing to reduce and at 10 st or 10 1/2 stone I still have rolls of tummy and my boobs are big. As others have said it depends on your body type. I am small boned.

JRM17 · 03/08/2025 15:38

I'm soo jealous of how much ur body has change with a 2.5st loss. I've lost almost 4.5stone and have gone from a 18 to a 16. It's so disheartening, I'm 5'7 and have gone from 16'8 to 12'4 and am still wearing the same jeans, yes they are a little less tight but I still can't get the next size down. Well done on the progress and I'd say yes keep going.

How is that even possible??
Must be so disheartening!

Totally possible. You need to lose more weight to go down a size, on average, when you’re bigger. The smaller you get, the e fewer pounds you need to lose to see a difference. They call it the kitchen roll effect.

RebeccaRedhat · 03/08/2025 15:46

I've lost more than 4 stone 8n the last 14 months, now weighing around 8st 7 - 8st 10 and it has been in the last stone I've lost my chunky thighs.
Im.watching my teenage daughter grow and I can see she is gaining weight on her legs, whilst her top half is still tiny so I think that's our way!

Coolingclan · 03/08/2025 15:48

Im 51 5ft 6 and 9 stone, I am a size 10. I get lots of comments on my nice figure, however clothes hide that I am a little bit flabby round my stomach. I started at the gym 2 months ago as I want to be healthier and hope this will make a difference to my stomach as well. My diet consists of 70% healthy choices and 30% cake so I know I need to improve here to really see a difference. The rest of me just needs a bit of toning.

JuliaAL · 03/08/2025 15:49

I'm a little bit taller than you and I went from 12st 12lb (size 16/18) to 10st 7lb (size 14). I've recently dropped to 9st 12lb and I can really see and feel the difference in my clothes and I'm more like a size 12 now. (Years ago i went down to 9st 3lb but that was far too skinny for me)

Poffigirl1 · 03/08/2025 15:53

Ice recently lost nearly a stone after feeling comfortable at 10st 6. I'm 5ft 4 and fitted into size 12 and sometimes big size 10. Only when I lost the weight did I realise how round I looked before. I cycle a lot and I really didn't look good in lycra, a bit like a sausage in too tight skin. 🤣 I think I was healthy before but now I feel as if I have more energy, I'm faster at running and cycling and I don't suffer from heartburn. Now I properly fit into size 10 without having to hide my middle. I would say that the last few pounds are really hard to.lose though. I'm maintaining a calorie deficit and cycling 100 miles a week and I'm stuck at 9st 9.

RhiRhi78 · 03/08/2025 15:55

I’m 5 foot 3 but can’t get out of a size 12 no matter how much weight I’ve lost since I had kids. Before children, I was a size 10 at 9 stone. Recently I got down to 8 and a half stone - my lightest since I was a teen - and I was still a size 12. I think it’s because I’ve got an hourglass figure and a 28gg/h bust!!!!

lifeisacat · 03/08/2025 15:59

I’m 12 stone 12, and my target weight is 10 stone. I have been told I should be 9 stone but haven’t been that small since I was 12. I never loose from my boobs.
I have found weight lifting to make a difference to my dress size than my weight. I’m a size 14 down from a 16/18 but have only lost about a stone so far.
min happy with my body but more worried about my health. Try to focus about how you feel rather then a number, I found the mind set change has helped. I also tend to go on measurements rather than weight.
