Will going from around 10st to 9st make a big difference?

Hi,

I’ve been on a weight loss journey. I’m 5ft 5, I started at 12st 9 and I am now 10st 3 so I’ve lost nearly 2 & a half stone. I was a 16 jeans size and now a 12.

I originally thought that if I got down to 9st I would love my body and look and feel slim but with just over one stone to go, I still have lots of fat to lose from my legs, stomach and arms (bingo wings) and I’m struggling to see that one stone will get rid of all of that!

Do you think it would? Will I see a dramatic difference in my body from 10st 3lbs to 9st? Or should I be aiming for closer to 8st?

I know about skinny fat and have just started at the gym this week to try and build some muscle to ‘tone up’ aswell as lose weight. Been doing strength training and a bit of cardio.

Is anyone 5ft 5 and around 9st? If so, what clothes size are you if you don’t mind me asking? I really wanted to order a load of new clothes for when I’m happy in my body but don’t know whether to go for size 10 or 8.

Thanks for any replies
xxx

I'm 5'3 and just under 10st - I find 3lb either way makes a huge difference, so a full stone will definitely have an effect.

Unfortunately your body will retain fat where it wants to & there's nothing we can do about it.

My body will let my ribs protrude & boobs disappear before I lose an ounce off my thighs. It's v frustrating but that's how my family are built.

I agree. I lost a stone from 10-9 stone, I’m 5 3 and my legs still seems huge but my top half is looking a bit skinny. Nice toned shoulders but bones sticking out. I don’t want to lose more there but I know if I keep going to try and lose more on my legs it will just go from my top half. Aiming to work the muscles more instead and see if that helps xx

I think one stone makes a massive difference. I am 5’4’’ and weigh 9 stone 4 but I am very small framed and carry it all on my stomach so if I could get to just under 9 stone it would make a difference to how I fit into clothes. Just five pounds or so makes a difference to doing up your jeans! Good luck you have done really well.

Lafufufu · 02/08/2025 09:08

Im 5"3 10 to 9 is dramatically different for me.

So is 11-> 10 i am currently 11 and know I'd feel a lot better at 10 but im in a plateau

Hi, thanks for replying. Yes I totally get what you are saying. I do, do tape measure measurements of different parts of my body and take photos so I can compare that way. I did that since I first started weight loss. And I was thinking the same thing, if I’m building muscle, the scales may stop going down as much but my body could be getting smaller xxx

It's not just looking smaller. More toning, particularly if you focus on your core, tends to give better posture which has a massive impact on how good you look imo

spoonbillstretford · 02/08/2025 09:10

Checking your waist to height ratio would be a starter for ten@Sparkles100000

Then perhaps for six months focus on maintaining but getting fitter and building muscle mass, then see how you feel after that.

1apenny2apenny · 02/08/2025 09:11

It’s the kitchen towel affect, the slimmer you are the bigger difference the pounds make you look and feel. I agree with others though start building muscle. It will not only give you a better shape but it will enable you to maintain weight more easily as muscle needs fuel.

unsevered67 · 02/08/2025 09:12

I’m 5 ft 4 and around 8 stone 12. I still have chubby legs and candles, and I am slim rather than skinny. But I’ve been 10 stone previously and I look much better now. I have a bit of a waist (post menopausal) and it’s much easier to find clothes to suit .

EatMoreChocolate44 · 02/08/2025 09:13

Well this has depressed me. I'm 5ft 2 and 9 stone 7 and I always thought I wasn't overweight. BMI is in the healthy (though top end) range. I wear mostly size 10, occasionally size 12. I do run 3 times a week but I love chocolate. I look ok in my clothes. Ideally I'd like to be 9 stone but at 3 inches taller than me OP I think you don't need to loose that much unless you want to be skinny. I am 44 though and reaching perimenopause so I'm happy with my weight as it's likely to go up over the next few years. 🙈

FluffletheMeow · 02/08/2025 09:14

I'm 5'5" and just over 9 stone. I wear a 10. Or an M&S 8. 😉

RantzNotBantz · 02/08/2025 09:15

I would say yes.

For me (went from 83Kg to 65Kg) there was a sudden point where 1Kg made all the difference.

Due to particular circumstances I had dropped to 63Kg , caught sight of my naked bum in the mirror and thought ‘nope, too thin, I’m losing shape’

The less weight you carry the bigger the % of your body each stone or Kg represents.

(currently 168Cm, 67.5 Kg and M&S size 10)

Screenager · 02/08/2025 09:17

If you go to the gym you may find that your body shape changes more than the weight. I fluctuate between 9 and 9.5 stone and the only difference I see is on my belly.

I am muscular everywhere else, size 8 on top and 8/10 on bottom. 5’5

YourFairCyanReader · 02/08/2025 09:21

Massove well done on your weight loss!

I lost 2 stones and am now 9st, similar height to you. I'm now a size 8 and feel confident wearing anything really. I'm just in the process of buying new clothes, swimwear, bras etc, chucking away old ones, and determined to maintain this weight.

JaninaDuszejko · 02/08/2025 09:21

Your weight is in the healthy range of BMI. Don't worry about losing more weight.

Concentrate on exercise, do a mix of cardio (150 mins a week minimum) plus weight bearing exercise at least twice a week. That will make you feel better than trying to hit a theoretical ideal weight.

VeryStressedMum · 02/08/2025 09:24

I'm 5'5 and about 9st 4lb ish
The clothes size depends on the shop, 10, 12 or small
From 10 st 2 to my current weight was about a clothes size from 12 to generally a 10 I think I look very slim but not skinny. However if I lost more I would start to look too thin.
I carry weight quite evenly all over my body, which I think helps as I don't have one part of my body which is bigger than another.
I still have some fat on me as my weight isn't so low that all fat has gone. I think I need to build more muscle so I look better

I lost a stone last year from cutting out all sweet stuff (so no more biscuits, chocolate, cake etc) and lost a stone in a month - I was 10.5 stone and now I’m 9.5, I’m taller than you (5’9) so wasn’t big to start with but the difference is amazing. I’m not sure if it’s the actual weight loss or just cutting out crappy sugary foods but I have so much more energy and just feel loads better and all my clothes fit really well (& had to size down on my jeans) Seeing as I was quite slim to start with I was surprised how much better I feel - and now I never want sweet things. Currently in Italy and don’t even want any gelato!

Oh god

whyamisuddenlygettingolder · 02/08/2025 09:24

It’s so interesting how bodies are so different - I’m 5ft 5 and 11st 3, and I’m a size 10! But I go to the gym a lot, so I guess have a fair amount of muscle. I think I’d look ok but very slim at 10 stone, and at 9 stone I’d not look good at all. I think just go with your gut and your tape measure, and stop when you’re feeling happy - comparison can’t really tell you anything.

Jk987 · 02/08/2025 08:24

It depends. Sometimes if you’re at the lower end of a healthy weight, your boobs disappear and your face can look drawn. Maybe 10lb is the magic number? See how you go!

Yes I can definitely tell I’ve lost from face, boobs, collar and neck areas. They are all great now but I need the arms, legs and stomach to catch up! Xxx

Another one here who noticed a big difference between 10 and 9st. Well I’m saying 9 - I haven’t got to that milestone, hovering around 9st 5lbs. But from 10st 5lbs it’s a noticeable difference!

I don’t tend to exercise much, was going running before the school holidays but don’t do any toning exercises which I know would help.

Ive mainly gone with the calories in/out approach and what a difference, so much easier than other diets I’ve tried.

Looking forward to hitting the 9st maybe when schools go back and I can get a better routine, but even at 9st 5 I’m much happier with my body (top heavy so always felt podgy around tummy/arms/back but that one stone did help a lot to smooth things out a bit).

EveryDayisFriday · 02/08/2025 09:27

This is really useful to me, I'm 5'4 and 1lb off my original goal weight of 10st7.

I've been anywhere from 13st to 15st5 all my adult life so have no idea what my ideal weight would be. I'm an hourglass and would like to keep my curves so I'm happy to be at the fuller end of healthy BMI.

I'm now aiming for 9st7, another stone off to see how I look and feel.

luckyluckyluck3 · 02/08/2025 09:27

I’m about your current height and weight. I was last your desired weight about fifteen years ago. I looked better but I’m happier and fitter now. It’s also a relatively easy weight to maintain.

Cheesetoastiees · 02/08/2025 09:35

I’m 5.5 and have always weighed between 8.5 a 9 stone (except during pregnancy). I do have a small frame though and have always worn a size 6-12 (mostly 8-10) depending on the shop 😂

It’s what you’re happy with, natural frame and where can still eat a good healthy varied diet.

RavenPie · 02/08/2025 09:38

I’m shorter than you and trying to go from just over 11 stone to hopefully under 9 stone. I’m currently about 9.5 and I can really tell the difference from 10. 10 stone to 9 stone makes a difference.

Alltheyellowbirds · 02/08/2025 09:45

Sparkles100000 · 02/08/2025 08:23

It’s crazy because I’ve seen other people at 10st 7 and they look slim and great and I’m lighter but look so much bigger. Thank you, I’ll stick to my 9st goal and hope I do also notice a big change xxx

That’s to do with body composition. Two people at the same weight can look vastly different if one has a higher percentage of muscle and the other one has a higher percentage of fat.

i think you’ll see a difference with your strength training.

Doitrightnow · 02/08/2025 09:46

I was 10.5 stone post pregnancy and now 9st and I look and feel very different, imo.

TakeMeToAnIgloo · 02/08/2025 09:48

I've had similar weight loss, but have only got down to 9.5 stone. I'd really like to get to 9 stone, but the last pounds seem impossible, even though I've cut so much out already, and am exercising daily. I don't do enough weights, but am trying to increase them.
But the clothing size is much smaller than the last time I was at this weight, as I've done it through running as well as cutting calories. So my body fat percentage is significantly lower, and that does help. But the difference between 10 stone 3, where I was for ages, and 9 stone 7 has been noticeable. Still not where I'd like though - it's noticeable over my collar bone, smaller boobs, ribs, lower thighs/knees, arms, wrists. I'm still persistently quite fat around my middle/waist, and somewhat upper thighs. So that means clothes don't really fit properly - 10s are too big in some places, but 8s too tight at the waist.
And saggy skin across my tummy, bingo wings that actually wobble all the time, loose skin under my chin and neck. Those have definitely increased as I lost the last stone or so as well - so the differences you notice if you keep going might not all be good!

Now if anyone could tell me how to lose another 7 pounds to get to a mid-range BMI and hopefully an OK waist size, that would be good! And how to get rid of the rolls around the middle, and the saggy skin everywhere....
