Hi

As my user name says this summer the Ryan Air seatbelt did not fit.
Yesterday I had to sit on a wooden deck chair and I found myself trying to Google what the weight limit could be

So tomorrow I start a diet.
So many threads on Mumsnet are for people much smaller than me
I'm 18 stones and 5lbs.

Please feel free to join if you are seriously overweight, please don't join if you are just averagely fat.

@Petra42 it's nice when people notice! Not that anyone in my house says anything much. I don't weigh myself as I know I have a competitive temperament and would be very easily put off if the scales weren't right. Also it's a long haul - sometimes I need to eat out (last night for eg) and the menu's not ideal but I don't want to be rude.

@Jaq27 it's so stressful when work dries up - I quit my full time teaching job (I had to in order to keep my sanity) and had a lovely 0 hours contract at the school covering courses/illness etc but with all the education cutbacks everything is in house/courses are not allowed as much and I have had no work at all. Looking at a few other options at 61...

Well done on the portion sizes - I'm finding it's becoming a habit to eat a bit less. And it's always so lovely when grown up kids come home but the alcohol consumption definitely goes up!!

CakeFace1234 · 17/10/2025 18:51

mumwith yay to the seatbelt. Must have been a relief to feel the click. I think pizza is fine as long as it's not a stuffed-crust deep pan!
Jaq I really hope the work situation picks up for you both; what a talented couple you are. Getting out is a good way to try to combat low mood. Sounds like you had a lovely time with your DD and partner. I know what you mean, when guests come over, it really is a buffet-style breakfast situation rather than rice crispies or cornflakes.

Petra That sounds really positive and I think sourdough is much nicer, once you get used to the taste, healthier apparently and more filling normal toast. Glad you're being a bit kinder to yourself. And 20k steps - that's about 10 miles isn't it. That's fantastic.
I lost 2 lb, over two months, so a painfully slow loss but in the right direction.

Jaq27 · 20/10/2025 10:35

Thanks for your kind words @CakeFace1234 and @Mumwithbaggage xx
I need them badly.
Been very low the past few weeks. I hate not achieving anything (such as weight loss!) and also not earning any money or doing anything useful with my brain.
Your words were very understanding so just wanted to say 'thank you' and that you've made me feel heard.
Good luck with the job hunting @Mumwithbaggage -- it is daunting to have to think about interviews and career changes at our age.
I get especially panicky with Christmas around the corner and both of my adult children (21 and 23) will be here expecting good old mum to put on the luxury spread and drinks and special prezzies like the the good old days of wine and plenty ...!
I have no weight loss to report, only gains, but glad to have this board to come to for support.
Good luck with your weeks everyone x

Mumwithbaggage · 25/10/2025 23:22

We mustn't let this thread drizzle off. It's a great place of support, losing or not.

Jaq27 I fully get what you mean about providing the shiny presents and all the extras from bank of mum. I currently have zero income and about £1000 of bills to ay, most of them council tax on my late dad's property (which we owned as he was too old for a mortgage - currently costing us 3k a month for martgage which dh is paying) - double because it's unoccupied. We're trying so so hard to sell it and having no benefits at all from anything the council tax pays for but if I don't pay it affects my credit score. Please god someone wants to buy it soon!!

CakeFace1234 · 31/10/2025 18:12

Just returned from break, seatbelt did up so bit relief. Was a lovely trip. Have put on 2lb but that's not bad after a break. Was so lovely not to cook and clean. From tomorrow, 1st Nov, I will be more focused on making healthy food choices.

I agree, Christmas is such an expensive time of year. Children do seem to get more expensive the older they get.

mumwith I hope you get a buyer soon for your Dad's property, that must be hard being in your position.

Jaq27 hope you are feeling a little better . Look after yourself.

@Jaq27 definitely keep using this thread as a sounding board. I use mumsnet a lot but this thread is one of the supportive ones.

@CakeFace1234 excellent news about the hols and the seat belt scenario!

Not much has changed for me although my size 18 jeans are feeling slightly looser/before they were depressingly feeling tight, and i think my belly is getting smaller. My aim is to be a 14/16 whereas im currently an 18! Half term has been difficult foodwise because I couldnt follow my usual healthy food routine but back to normal next week. Im still trying to be much kinder to myself.

Interestingly with the weight loss injections, although im so so envious of all the celebs doing it (see Amy Schumer/Marcus Mumford), my friends seem to have now stopped, for cost reasons and also side effects like hair loss, BO and extreme nausea.

Hello everyone! I’ve been looking for a chat like this for a while so would love to join if that’s ok? I need like minded people to speak to and be inspired by x

Jaq27 · 03/11/2025 16:32

Hello @Hastyjen2703 and @AutumnMagpies and welcome. This is a good place to vent about the lonely weight loss path or share success. I've found it very non-judgy.

Thanks @petra and @CakeFace1234 I will be here regularly to check in and see how everyone is doing.
@Mumwithbaggage GAAAHHH that sounds horrible and so frustrating ... especially with Christmas round the corner and everyone thinking about spending £££ they haven't got :(
Here's hoping you sell your dad's house soon x

I'm afraid I have fallen off the weight loss wagon big time. We went away for a week to visit friends and family. It was a road trip from Sussex to Suffolk, then York to Newcastle, then Durham then down to Stratford on Avon. Lots of meals out, most days sitting in the car and lots of wine.
So I am UP 4lbs since I joined the board ...! and yes, I know it's all my own doing.

I am checking in and want to get back on track.
Weight:
12 stone 9lbs ... started here on 12st 5 :(
Target:
10 stone
BMI: Don't even want to think about it. Probably over 34 but don't want to check because I'll cry.

I think what's given me a lot to think about is I met up with a friend I hadn't seen for about 10 years. She was so slim and so glam!!! She's 65 but you wouldn't know it.
I'd been walking on the beach so my hair was a scraggy mess and I was wearing baggy old cargo pants (which were wet cos the waves caught me). I felt like an old scruff who'd given up. And we used to go out clubbing together in our younger days!!!!

Well. Carry on the good work everyone. I hope to report back with a loss next week x

Mumwithbaggage · 04/11/2025 09:31

Welcome @Hastyjen2703 !

Hello to everyone else. @CakeFace1234 such a relief when the seatbelt does up! That was the only thing I was stressing about last time I went away.

@Jaq27 I hope you enjoyed your road trip - some lovely places in there. I think we have to accept that any weight loss journey is long term and there will be little wins and losses. I have absolutely now idea how much I weigh (apart from definitely far too much!) because I know if I put on a pound I'd be heartbroken and would head to the fridge to stuff my face. I'm just learning to be kind to myself - took me long enough. I'm not there yet. Just keep getting back on that bandwagon, we've all been there lots of times x

I'm on a major guilt trip at the moment - dh is working so many hours (at 65) and I'm not working. Wouldn't be such an issue if dad's house had sold (another viewing this afternoon so everything's crossed - we've reduced the price). So am doing some long overdue diy to try to be useful. At 61, I have no more years of being a primary school teacher left in me!

@Petra42 that's definitely a win with the jeans!

We all put in lots of hard work some or all of the time and it's demoralising when the results aren't quick but this is such a lovely supportive group!

I'm off to Zumba Gold (for over 50s) - hate all those big mirrors in the room as all I focus on is my horrible stomach. I'm definitely the tallest and biggest person in there so I feel I stick out like a sore thumb. But hey, it's fun and I'm the only one in there focusing on what my stomach looks like in the mirror!

Jaq27 · 14/11/2025 09:47

Hi all! Checking in.

Start Weight (original original ): 13st 5
Weight today: 12st 7 (was 12st 4lbs before I went stupid dammit)
Goal: 10 st
Current BMI: 33.1 😭

so stupid losing the same weight again and again. Have a nurse check up next week so that’ll be depressing too.

hoping the house sale has moved forward @Mumwithbaggage I know what it’s like to feel you aren’t contributing to the household. I’ve put out loads of feelers but nothing for me to do since June. DH has a few bits of work come in which covers the food bills.
Son got a job though!!! So at least one of us will have a salary in December 😂

best wishes to all x

CakeFace1234 · 15/11/2025 09:07

Hi All,
Just catching up -
Jaq27, We are far more critical of ourselves than others, your friend would have just loved catching up with you and not noticed the windsweptness. A walk on the beach, in Autumn though sounds invigorating! This week's pre-diabetic session was about mindfulness. Being in the moment, taking in and appreciating nature; the sounds, the smell, the visuals - a bigger picture of life, and not focusing on details. I think a beach stroll sounds perfect for that.
Congrats to your son though - a job! He must be so chuffed.

Mumwith well done on the Zumba! sounds like fun and remember that everyone is focusing on their own bodies in the mirror oh - and if they remembered to turn the oven off before they left and if they locked the front door Just enjoy moving to music with others.

Petra well done with the jeans. It's a lovely feeling when you notice small changes.

Have a good week all

I lost 2lb
CW 13.12 - in the next stone bracket so that is a plus
GW 10

Mumwithbaggage · 15/11/2025 22:45

Hi everyone!

Nothing happening with the house - some interest but they have properties to sell. I go between thinking this horrible situation will go on forever and entirely blanking it out.

The stress of it is causing me to drink wine. Not great for weight loss but pretty necessary in an utterly shite house selling position!

All 4 kids and partners are home this weekend for two of their birthdays tomorrow (one was yesterday, the other next week). Doing a Greek feast for 10 so I'll try not to have too many carbs but sometimes it's about enjoying the lovely moment.

CakeFace1234 · 20/11/2025 10:10

Hi All

Mumwith I would find that situation stressful too. It is using up a good chunk of worry in your mind until it is resolved.

Hope your celebrations went well and You had a much-needed distraction.

Did a random weigh in this morning and lost another 1lb. Feels good. Still can't really tell overall, although I did noticed that bras don't dig in at all now, no red marks when I take them off so something must be happening up top.

Hope everyone is well.

Jaq27 · 21/11/2025 12:00

Hi all!

Congratulations on the losses @CakeFace1234 ! Well done.
I have to admit I do like to walk along the beach on my own as I have a good ponder and even talk to myself like a mad old bat as I stumble across the shingle😅Glad to hear the pre-diabetic meetings are helping. And yes - son's job is very exciting and even more exciting is he will be able to start paying us 'keep' and we need that right now.

Hey @Mumwithbaggage so frustrating about the house ... and I know what you mean about tucking into the wine when you are feeling stymied/low. Brains just seem to need that 'hit' don't they? I feel it too. I haven't earned any money since June and the savings we've been surviving on are now looking pretty thin
:(
Still got some irons in the fire, and hoping something turns into a solid project for us. Maybe after Christmas ...

So I have weighed in at 12.6 today
Going in the right direction.

Had DD to stay this week and it was DH's birthday so ate and drank stuff I wouldn't normally have, so I'll talk the 1lb loss as a mini victory.

Have good weekends everyone x

Mumwithbaggage · 23/11/2025 17:27

Hi everyone

Hope you're all keeping warm. I've been a bit rubbish the last couple of weeks and remembering to book classes at the gym (need to bang on time or the spaces disappear pretty quickly) and feel a bit lethargic because of it. Dd2's 30th birthday today - not that she's even in the country 😂- so tomorrow is a good time to start again. I have a class booked.

@Jaq27 here's hoping work picks up very soon. This house thing has really affected our money for the moment and it's amazing how quickly money disappears. Things can only get better.

@CakeFace1234 bras that don't dig in is a big win. So much more comfortable!

Have a lovely week everyone - we might be moving in small steps but at least we're moving x

WafferThinMint · 24/11/2025 14:50

Oh dear! A shameful weekend of gorging on white bread, back here to try yet again.
18 stone 10 lbs, 5'9", BMI 38.7.
Goal weight 11 stone 7lbs
Breakfast: 5% Fage Greek yogurt, 1 satsuma, cinnamon and sultanas
Lunch: avocado, mackerel, cottage cheese and cherry toatoes with milled nuts, flaxseed and Q10
Dinner: will be chicken in spicy yogurt sauce on a bed of kale, spinach, green beans and cauliflower.
Drinks: water, green tea, tea and pomegranate juice.

CakeFace1234 · 27/11/2025 10:02

Hi all,
Jaq definitely take the 1lb loss as a mini victory. Your current weight is a dream weight for me by next Spring. I think think the older we get, the more stubborn fat is. Hope you enjoyed your family celebrations.
Mumwith well done on booking the classes. It's so much harder to get out to exercise when the weather turns. But our bodies thank us for it. My bum is definitely firmer since walking uphill on the treadmill 3-4 times a week.
Waferthin Your diet sounds so healthy and actually, also really yummy. Lots of anti-inflammatory foods in there.

I'm still stuck on the same weight for the last week which is strange as I haven't snacked at all and going to the gym regularly. Hopefully by this time next week, things will have gone down a little. The Christmas meals start next week.

Have a good week all.

Jaq27 · 27/11/2025 12:14

Hi @CakeFace1234

I know those weeks! You do everything 'right' - eat healthy stuff, exercise, portion control and the stubborn scales just stick on the same number :(
Keep it up - our SW team leader said that sometimes you get the 'double-bounce' after week 2 and get a bigger loss.
Thank you for your kind support as we approach Christmas ... always a challenging time to keep on track.

I don't weigh in til tomorrow but I'm hopeful I've dropped another lb.
Your 'dream weight' on me is an Obese BMI, as I am just over 5 ft tall.
If I was only 5 inches taller I'd be merely 'overweight'.

The BMI chart suggests I should be 7 -- 9 stone. Can't see me ever losing 3-5 stone as I approach my 60s.
I get depressed when I look at the BMI chart in truth, as I will probably never achieve a 'healthy range' and I hate that.

Will check in tomorrow. Have a good day x

Jaq27 · 28/11/2025 12:32

Happy Friday!

Start weight 2024: 13st 5lbs

Weigh in today: 12 st 5lbs
Target weight: 10st -ish

Slowly taking off the weight I put back on this year, so I'm nearly back to where I was in April 2025 (12st 4lbs).

It's a slow old slog especially when I'm losing the same bloody 5lbs ....

Hope the classes have been good @Mumwithbaggage

Have good weekends everyone x

CakeFace1234 · 23/12/2025 12:27

Haven't weighed as ignorance is bliss me thinks. New Year, new me, hopefully and the bonus will be just getting through Christmas without too much carnage on the scales.

Just popping in to say have a Happy Christmas everyone.

xxx

Mumwithbaggage · 31/03/2026 22:05

Hey! Anyone still around? How are you all doing? x

CakeFace1234 · 07/04/2026 15:37

Hi there, not as good as I should be. I think when the pre-diabetic weigh ins stopped, so did I! It was keeping me accountable to a degree. I have put on 8lb since my last meeting so back on the band wagon.

How are you doing? Anyone else around?

xx

pottytrainingdd · 07/04/2026 16:57

Hi! Went completely quiet as life well and truly blew up. I started with an online coach in January at 114.4kg (around 18st, just under a stone lighter than when I last posted on here) and I’m currently 106.4 (16st 10.5ish). Slowly chipping away at it.

Hope everyone is well x

Petra42 · 08/04/2026 07:32

Hi @CakeFace1234 , I gave up checking my weight as was feeling better. However I think ive let myself go, not so much weight, just anything and everything really.
