Hi

As my user name says this summer the Ryan Air seatbelt did not fit.
Yesterday I had to sit on a wooden deck chair and I found myself trying to Google what the weight limit could be

So tomorrow I start a diet.
So many threads on Mumsnet are for people much smaller than me
I'm 18 stones and 5lbs.

Please feel free to join if you are seriously overweight, please don't join if you are just averagely fat.

I'd love to join in!
57 years old, weighed pushing 21 stones at my heaviest and I too had to use a Ryanair seat extender last year. I have thought it was likely for years but it finally happened in 2023.
When Michael Mosely died, all the talk of his 5:2 diet piqued my interest and my dh and I decided on a whim to give it a go.
I started using Nutracheck to calorie count and do 800 calories twice a week and 2000 for the other five days.
At the same time. I started doing Walk at Home videos on YouTube three times a week and generally walking more.
Since June 17 I have lost just under two stones and have dropped two sizes in jeans.
I still weigh over 15st so have a long way to go but for the first time probably ever, I feel I might just do it!

Completely forgot about this thread!
Hope all are well and still going (haven't read it yet).
I am plodding on - still fasting, still walking about 6-7 miles a day. Have switched morning exercises to weights and now dk them every morning.
Currently weigh 12st 11.7lb.

Mumwithbaggage · 07/06/2025 17:15

@Katypp wow! Fantastic stuff! What do you think makes the most difference, fasting or walking? Or is it just sticking to it? I don't think I'd find the time to walk that far every day. How many steps is that?

The walking is a commitment but I think it's about finding time to fit it in really. I haven't got young kids so that helps massively.
We walk for about 45 mins-1 hour every morning at about 7-7.30 and again after dinner at night. It usually ends up being about 15,000 -17,000 steps depending on what else I've done that day. As I say, not having kids to get to bed or get up makes this possible.
We usually do a longer 6-12 mile walk at the weekend.
Sticking to it helps. I really try to keep at it. Before, if I had a bad day I would give up and go wild, but I have managed to rein myself in and just carry on as if I haven't just eaten loads of chocolate or whatever 😚

Wow. That is incredible, well done! From a start of around 21 to now 12 st 11. You must feel sooo much better.

I did my first park run today. Came in under 45 minutes (just over 7k steps for that). On the drive home, I said I wouldn't do another as I found it so hard but I think the amnesia is starting to settle in so may try again - my thighs do feel a bit firmer!

I bet you feel fab after that, i would!
Park run does pique my interest, I must admit, but I would just walk, not run.
I am 58 and absolutely terrified of twisting my ankle/knee so would not dare run, not that I've ever run in my life.

CakeFace1234 · 07/06/2025 23:46

I was never a runner, I tried about 6 months or so ago but it was too hard. I thought I'd try again if I lost a stone. I was invited along this morning and accepted although the others ran the whole thing; one lapped me. It was quite a flat course which helped and I did a combination of jogging/walking although my jogging speed is probably a fast walking pace for others. There were loads walking the whole thing though, the run Marshalls were very encouraging.

Katypp · 08/06/2025 00:13

Quite tempted to give it a go now!
Apparently our local park run is one of the more 'challenging' in the area, typical

I volunteer at our local junior event. Walking is positively encouraged at ParkRun. They have specific volunteer roles to support people who walk the whole thing.

Weigh day today and I e lost 4lb! I'm aware it's my first week so it'll probably slow down to 1 or 2 a week but it's given me a boost to keep going.

I definitely didn't do asuch walking as I intended to do I'm going to try to be a bit more consistent with that this week.

Hope things are going well for everyone else x

Fantastic! Well done you must feel grand.
How are you planning to lose the weight? Calorie counting?

Jaq27 · 13/06/2025 14:40

Hi everyone,

Glad to see so many positive updates.

I've back on my better eating routine. Lost 1lb this week.

Height; 5ft 1
SW: 13st 1 (probs more but I was too scared to get on the scales)
CW: 12 st 3 (still struggling to lose the 4lb 'cruise weight' I put on in April)
TW: 10 st

In really good news I have started my June BP measurements and it's now coming up as 'Slightly raised' and also 'Healthy'!!!
This is a HUGE achievement for me as my BP was 'Very high' back in January. So health wise I'm going in the right direction, even if the weight loss is a slow burner.

Enjoy the weekend everyone x

Jaq27 · 13/06/2025 14:49

Hey @Mumwithbaggage how's the prep for DS's wedding going? Did you find anything lovely to wear? Been thinking of you x
It must only be about 3 weeks away now. How exciting.

Mumwithbaggage · 14/06/2025 22:59

Hi @Jaq27 yes I did thank you - got a floaty dress from Needle and Thread and I'm really happy with it. Keeping up with the classes and using my little kitchen dumbells. I certainly have more energy and more of my clothes fit better.

Very excited about the wedding now - less excited about driving to the station to pick up dh and the partners of two of my daughters at midnight tonight after they've been in London for a boozy action packed day!!

How's everyone else doing? I love hearing about the successes on here!

Mumwithbaggage · 14/06/2025 23:00

@Jaq27 well done on the BP readings. That's fantastic X

Dollyparot200 · 16/06/2025 11:41

Weighted myself again today I was 95 kgs now 93.4 so losing slowly happy with progress need to keep on with it, still lowfat because of gallstones

CakeFace1234 · 17/06/2025 12:42

Gosh, everyone is doing so well.

I have plateaued and know it's because, I started to slip with carbs but reading your updates has motivated me to get back to it.

I did another park run Sat I had an identical time! I am going to try running with music next week to see if it helps distract from the constant, this is sooo hard, my calves hurt, my fingers are swelling and it's too warm for this. Also, I am going to do some free weights to try and tone up a bit.

ApocalypseNowt · 18/06/2025 18:50

I'm not counting calories, tried it before and it's not for me. I'm just doing stuff like swapping cheese sandwich & crisps for lunch for eggs on toast (1 slice wholemeal) or a bowl of mushy peas. Having fruit & yoghurt for pudding instead of sugary crap. And moving more!

Just trying to get into healthier sustainable habits. Still have the odd glass of vino here and there - I'm not banning 'treats' completely as that's when I fall down.

Another 2lbs off this week so 6lb down in total. I still look like a potato but al least I'm heading in the right direction:)

Well done! As someone with high BP myself this is really encouraging.

HealthyWeightBy40 · 20/06/2025 08:32

Hi everyone, checking back in. It sounds as if you're all doing really well Smile

I'm on week 3 of slimming world and after a tough first few days (the sugar withdrawal!) I'm getting the hang of it and feeling good about it. The main rules are low sugar, low fat, very little bread (you can have a small amount of wholemeal bread or other high-fibre carbs each day, the rest has to be counted). Unlimited fruit and veg, lean protein and carbs like pasta, rice and potatoes. So I'm actually feeling really full which makes it totally manageable. For the first time in my whole life I'm managing to limit my intake of treats like chocolate, ice cream etc - I can still have them but obviously can't overindulge. So it feels sustainable. Obviously it's really early days but I'm feeling confident about sticking with it.

I'm 5'8 and my starting weight was 17st10.5, BMI 37.8. I found it difficult to set a target weight because I don't know how I'll look/feel as I get closer to a healthy weight, but my main target is to have a BMI in the healthy range so I decided to aim for BMI 23.5 which would be 11st0.5.

I lost 2 lbs in the first week and 3.5 lbs in the second, so 5.5lbs so far. (Current weight 17st5.) I understand you usually lose more at the beginning so I'm not expecting that every week! I'll be happy with 1.5lbs a week on average. I have a family wedding in August followed by a holiday so I'm hoping to have lost a stone or more by then and to feel a bit more confident and comfortable in my wedding outfit and swimsuit etc.

My blood test results show that I have high cholesterol, which was not a surprise and is extra motivation to keep up with the healthy eating and weight loss. The nurse advised me to book another blood test in 6 months so that's another mini goal and I'm hoping to have reduced my bad cholesterol by then.

Life is busy, I have two young kids, we ate out for Father's Day and we're going to a theme park this weekend, but I'm feeling able to make reasonably sensible choices and not feel as if the whole plan is out the window if I end up having a small dessert or one or two less healthy meals.

CakeFace1234 · 20/06/2025 19:27

Healthyweight that sounds like a great plan. I know someone who did very well on Slimming World, it was a system that really suited her. Aiming for a stone by August seems achievable and realistic.

Have a great day at the Theme park, you should have a high step count to offset the impact of any treats.

Hope everyone is okay. I do think that when you carry extra weight, the hot weather hits harder.

Jaq27 · 25/06/2025 12:33

Hi all,

Hope you are doing well.

Even though I've been counting what I eat or drink for the past 3 weeks the scales are firmly stuck at 12st 4lb. Been walking a lot more too. Seems very unfair.

Hey-ho. It's a lonely road this weight loss journey. x

In better news I completed my latest blood pressure diary and got a text from the surgery saying I was now 'within the normal/healthy range'. Hurray. So at least that means no medications for me.

Husband is away this week visiting his Ma in Newcastle (she has advanced dementia, now in a care home) so the dinner choices have been a bit random. Loads of fruit. Pesto pasta. Steak wrap with salad.
I've actually not got much of an appetite lately (unusual for me!) which somehow makes it even more frustrating that my weight is the same week after week.

Hope you're all OK. @Mumwithbaggage hope your son's wedding went well x

Mumwithbaggage · 26/06/2025 09:59

How frustrating for you @Jaq27 though you are obviously so much fitter if your BP is that much improved. Any chance you've built muscle and lost flab?

Was in a multi storey carpark with a suitcase last week (hotel while picking up dd who has finished at university) and the lift wasn't working. Made it to the third floor without needing my inhaler. That's progress for me. Baby steps. Of course I'd love to look gorgeous in wafty clothes but having more energy and feeling less like an old woman is good.

The registry wedding is tomorrow then the big celebration next week. My head's too busy right now as there are lots and lots of other real life things happening too - birthdays, graduation, daughter with broken foot (luckily not the one that's a bridesmaid), late dad's house to get back on the market once I've decorated the newly finished kitchen this weekend before it cripples us any more financially, find some different paid employment (not easy at 61!)...

But for now, thank you! I intend to fully enjoy the wedding and the company of our gorgeous children x

Jaq27 · 01/07/2025 15:14

Hope the wedding went well @Mumwithbaggage ! Enjoy the celebrations this week.

..... and .... MY SCALES HAVE MOVED AT LAST. For the first time in weeks.

I have lost 2lbs!!!

CW: 12st 2lbs
TW: 10st 2lbs (still Overweight but I'd be happy if I got to this)

Not sure what I did different last week except I ate more??? Funny.

I think a PP mentioned that you sometimes don't lose weight if you don't eat enough. Anyone else heard of this?

Probably my slothful post-meno digestive system finally catching up.

Have a good week all xx

Mumwithbaggage · 02/07/2025 23:06

Thank you @Jaq27 and well done you!!

The official bit was lovely. Wish I'd worn a different dress but there are very few pictures with me in apart from group ones where I look OK. Just very close family. Yes, I know it's not all about me!!

Having my eyelashes and eyebrows subtly (hopefully :) )tinted tomorrow - a first for me! Hair cut today AND first ever purchase from Space NK. Such lovely people in there! Not used to pampering myself and I know it's to do with my self esteem. Seriously, I could have cried! Always think I don't deserve it and the people serving/treating me will wonder what an ugly old fat woman like me is doing pretending she can look nicer. It's a me problem and I'm working on it. (Won't go into my childhood right now and how my mum instilled only silly women wore make up!!) Onwards and upwards x

Disclaimer: if you met me in real life you'd totally think I was a rational confident professional grown up.
