Hi, I have just started taking Orlistat today and I can see lots of old threads about it but none recently posted so just wondering if anyone else on here is on this same journey? I have around 5-6 stone that I could do with losing so my doctor suggested Xenical as a starting point. I have Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome too and I am sure my weight at 18.5 stone won't be helping those. Any friendly advice or chat would be greatly appreciated Smile

Lost another pound so thats 10lbs in 7 weeks, I'm happy with the progress, seems slower then others but I'm pleased

Kaylazoey · 07/09/2023 00:23

I’ve also hit the 10lb loss mark today, about 7 and a half weeks in! Definitely slower progress than I’ve seen some people have but I’ve been having quite a few “cheat” days and haven’t been exercising much so I’m super happy with that. Not being massively restrictive has helped me to keep going and has made this feel way more sustainable. Only about 40 lbs to go 😂

was thinking of buying these online? Another stubborn 2 stone to lose which will not shift. What is criteria for docs to prescribe?

I buy online and I think the criteria at most places is your BMI should be over 30.

Yes do lots of research, that’s always a good plan. I don’t think most people lose weight quickly on it but I certainly find it helpful in keeping me on the straight & narrow re my food choices.

Sounds much like my own weight loss and I’m happy to lose slowly but steadily too. For most people it’s not a quick fix.

That’s good progress and I like the ability to have “cheat days” too - or even cheat weeks when I’m on holiday 😜

Hope I can join in the chat, I started Orlistat last Sunday (10 days ago) and all was going fine but I did something very stupid.
I got drunk on Friday evening and I ended up taking a pill before eating a slap up meal of calamari starter, burger and chips.
Saturday I was fine but Sunday I had bad flatulence and opening my bowels a lot. Very orange and oily. I even had a few leaky farts, oh the shame!
(I have name changed by the way)
Anyway, to the point, I haven’t taken any pills since then as I wanted to recover and not risk more accidents but I’m still finding oil in the toilet even today. Any ideas when this might stop?
I’ve well and truly learnt my lesson but I’m eager to get started again

I believe Orlistat stays in your system about 48 hours so you should be ok now hopefully.

Chocolatesaltedballs · 07/09/2023 20:49

Where does everyone buy them online? And are they only taken sparsely when I plan a high fatty meal?

Twiglets1 · 07/09/2023 22:36

You shouldn’t eat a high fat meal on them @Chocolatesaltedballs it could lead to unpleasant consequences. There are lots of places to buy them from, you just need to Google it and make your choice.

Chocolatesaltedballs · 07/09/2023 23:01

I have just purchased 42 tablets 120mg. Will give them a try.

Twiglets1 · 07/09/2023 23:11

Good Luck @Chocolatesaltedballs

ZestyDragon · 09/09/2023 12:29

Its been a slow few weeks but I am down another two pounds which brings me to 16 in total. I find that the affects are not as bad as they were at the start. Possibly because I am eating a low fat diet in general but I even have days when I am a bit constipated. Anyone else?

Mamapearce420 · 26/09/2023 23:29

Hi ladies, my gp prescribed these to me today after I did quite a lot of research and mentioned this thread!
I suffer with chronic pain, incontinence, heart condition and hypermobility elheors danlers. I'm bed ridden most days unfortunately.
With a weight of 26 stone 6 5ft 7. Aged 22. It's time for me to try harder. I lost 3 stone last year in 8 weeks due to fasting but it caused more issues with my vitamin levels and I went anemic. My bust is 46M and my gp has agreed that if I lose 5-8 stone she will consider putting me down for a nhs breast reduction. The healthy weight is 8-10 stone but I'll happily sit at 15 or size 14-16 clothing and actually be able to buy bras in asda ect.
I eat 1-2 times a day medium fat intake.
Had my first tablet after a pub meal - 8oz steak , 5 wings, chips, double 1/4 pounder, scampi and corn on the cob with 2 full fat cokes (it was a cheeky rare outing Nd I didn't want to cook when we got home, it was one meal on the menu)

Usaully have cous cous or pot noodle for lunch (4/5 times per week)

Dinners - pasta dishes, pizza, burgers, pitta bread pizza, pies, roasts, cheese boards ect. But always within 2000 cal per day (using nutracheck) Any fat or oil is drained.

Will have some snacky bits - crips,biscuits,ice-cream,chocolate,tangfastics. (Once a fortnight all in)

Only drink 3-4 litres of water .may have the odd chamomile tea,ice tea or a energy drink.

I was quite active until I hit 17 after a accident at work that left me in a wheelchair temporarily then I had my son at 18 then pumping during lock down meant I snacked more and we had a take away every day for 14 days for the first 14 days of my sons life. I managed to pile on 6 stone in 18 months. I always check the calories but still end up eating it 🤦‍♀️

TheShellBeach · 27/09/2023 09:43

Hello @Mamapearce420 and welcome.
It sounds like you're motivated to make some changes, so all the best to you!

Twiglets1 · 27/09/2023 10:38

Welcome @Mamapearce420

Orlistat is not the best drug for a quick weight loss or a substantial one tbh. I wonder if you have heard of Wegovy? It sounds more suitable for you, hope it's ok to suggest something else. Or Saxenda could be another good option, not sure if you can get it on the NHS but you can get it via a private prescription from places like Boots.

Wegovy may or may not be available through your local NHS (maybe not if it wasn't suggested) but it would be a good idea to research it now for when it does become available.

In the meantime, of course try Orlistat - hope it works for you.

Are you taking three daily and having fewer calories?

Chocolatesaltedballs · 28/09/2023 15:31

@TheShellBeach yeah doing it all. Just nothing happening 😞

TheShellBeach · 28/09/2023 15:49

@Chocolatesaltedballs
Can you give an idea of what you're eating?
Maybe we can figure out what's going wrong.

Chocolatesaltedballs · 29/09/2023 09:20

@TheShellBeach typical day would be

breakfast, porridge usually
lunch, yogurt with fruit
dinner could be varied, potatoes/pasta with meat and vegetables. Had chick curried rice last night. Chips the night before. Dinners don’t always be healthy but I try to allow for this. Maybe this is where I’m going wrong?

tea x 3cups odd biscuit too.
water 750ml x 3

Feeling bloated on them too. Like an explosion is waiting to erupt but nothing

TheShellBeach · 29/09/2023 11:00

I felt bloated on them to start with but that settled down.

You're eating too many carbs IMO.

Can you ditch the pasta, potatoes and biscuits?

ZanteDreamer · 14/10/2023 07:27

Hi, just jumping on this thread. Newbie to orlistat and Mumsnet tbf! Been on orlistat since Tuesday, no side effects yet. Bought some period pants in case of accidents and wear them daily, and have a spare pair plus wipes in my bag which helps me feel more secure about that side of things. I'm aiming for 47g of fat which is spread through the day ( set by my fitness Pal) and log everything. I've got 2 stone to lose and as a 53 year old menopausal lump it's my last resort. I exercise and eat fairly healthily anyway but never been this big. It's really helped reading everyone's comments.

Ruthlessaunt · 14/08/2023 12:15

Yes, I am now on day 4. Been getting headaches and I am on night shift tonight so sorting out everything. Well done on losing 4lb!

Hi, I'm on day 5 and woken up with mild headaches last couple of days. Just wondered, did yours pass? I've not weighed myself yet , will be doing on body stat machine at gym on Monday I hope. Think my face looks a bit less bloated but not sure if I'm imagining it 🤣

Lisa6856 · 16/10/2023 07:52

I love Orlistat. It is basically making me scared to eat rubbish because of the oily poo side effect, with a very urgent need to 'go' it is making me look at food in a different way. If I see a family size chocolate bar, which previously I would have eaten within 2 minutes, I just see it as a slab of fat. It has changed my attitude towards food. I now eat healthy food because I know what the unhealthy food will look like as it comes out and I am disgusted that all of that unhealthy fat was going into my body, into my arteries, around my heart. It has been a visual education in healthy eating. I am losing weight and it's thanks to orlistat - https://healthful-online.com/c2831/orlistat.html

Mamapearce420 · 16/10/2023 10:27

I'm almost 3 weeks in. 1st week loads of oil and a 12ibs lost but then went through a snack mood the 2nd week and put half it back on.
Clean diet this week, had headaches first week. Drank more water and have been fine since. I have more energy some days though. I have a overalls 11stone target with no deadline but preferably within a few years. I'll still be over my weight for my height then but I don't think I'd want to be 8stone-11stone (the 'correct' weight for my 5ft 8 frame

TheShellBeach · 16/10/2023 13:42

I've just come back from holiday, where I paid no attention to dieting whatsoever.

I am gearing myself up to start the Orlistat again tomorrow. I imagine I've regained some of what I'd lost, but have not weighed myself yet.

Oops.
