Orlistat

Hi, I have just started taking Orlistat today and I can see lots of old threads about it but none recently posted so just wondering if anyone else on here is on this same journey? I have around 5-6 stone that I could do with losing so my doctor suggested Xenical as a starting point. I have Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome too and I am sure my weight at 18.5 stone won't be helping those. Any friendly advice or chat would be greatly appreciated Smile

I started out at just under 20 st, ten weeks ago.
I'm down to 17 st 7 lb now.
Since I started Orlistat I've lost 20 lb. That's since 16th July, so six weeks.
My loss is slowing down, but it's steady.
I'm hoping to persuade my doctor to prescribe them.

@TheShellBeach and @Twiglets1 thank you so much. great ideas with the dinner 👍

I’m just so nervous - has anyone built up the dose by doing one tablet a day with dinner to start with maybe?

You could do that. I only take 2 a day when I’m taking them ( having a break currently as on holiday so can’t easily control my fat intake).
It seems like your breakfast is almost zero fat so I wouldn’t bother taking Orlistat with that. Up to you re lunch.

Started 20th July at 13st 4.2, weighed 25th August and 12st 9. Lost 9.2lbs in 5 weeks, I have an under active thyroid and I dont take a tablet with ever meal, also skip some days depending know my work shift (I don't take a tablet if I have an early shift the next day) I'm pleased with the progress so far

@TheShellBeach That is amazing weight loss. Well done!

I haven't asked the doctor for this tbh. I don't think they would agree so I am just going to carry on buying through Boots.

I would love to be at the point where I am worrying about losing a few pounds but it is a way off. However, if I had done that in the first place I wouldn't be here trying to lose 7 stone!

porridgeisbae · 28/08/2023 11:35

@ZestyDragon That's great, well done.

ZestyDragon · 28/08/2023 14:23

That’s good! Maybe I should ask mine for a prescription too 🤔

The reason you have put on weight can’t be anything to do with Orlistat. Maybe you have exercised less than usual or eaten more calories than you think. I would reduce your calories to around 1400 and see if you can lose weight then.

This really isn’t healthy advice, 1400 calories a day isn’t healthy!

They aren't losing weight on 1750 calories so they need to reduce further.

They are on a diet and failing to lose weight on 1750 calories so how much would you suggest they aim for?

I agree with this advice from @Twiglets1 Also, if someone is not losing weight at 1750 calories, are they perhaps really sedentary? I'm disabled and really need to stick to a low number of calories, as I find exercising and walking very difficult indeed.

The other thing that occurred to me though, was that maybe the person having 1750 calories a day is only guessing - so in other words, is actually having a lot more calories than 1750?

It's easy for calories to mount up and it's essential to chart them accurately.

This was my thinking, unless you count every condiment, every taste of things, every gram of food you can’t be 100% on how many calories you are counting. 1500 calories is probably bare minimum you need for your body to function.

TheShellBeach · 05/09/2023 15:43

I remember a TV programme about dieting, where the protagonists were followed round all week with a hidden camera, then shamed by the presenter of the programme when the true amount of food they'd eaten was revealed.

It was astonishing how all the people featured in the programme swore blind that they were counting calories, yet they were actually eating about double what they'd estimated.

I can't remember what the programme was called.

TheShellBeach · 05/09/2023 15:44

It was Secret Eaters.

TheShellBeach · 06/09/2023 17:24

I've lost another 3 lb this week.

Wow! I’ll be back on the Orlistat and my diet next week but it took me ages to lose 1 stone never mind 3.
Never mind, I’m happy as long as I’m losing.

KJ2019 · 06/09/2023 20:50

Hope I can join in the chat, I started Orlistat last Sunday (10 days ago) and all was going fine but I did something very stupid.
I got drunk on Friday evening and I ended up taking a pill before eating a slap up meal of calamari starter, burger and chips.
Saturday I was fine but Sunday I had bad flatulence and opening my bowels a lot. Very orange and oily. I even had a few leaky farts, oh the shame!
(I have name changed by the way)
Anyway, to the point, I haven’t taken any pills since then as I wanted to recover and not risk more accidents but I’m still finding oil in the toilet even today. Any ideas when this might stop?
I’ve well and truly learnt my lesson but I’m eager to get started again

Chocolatesaltedballs · 06/09/2023 22:13

was thinking of buying these online? Another stubborn 2 stone to lose which will not shift. What is criteria for docs to prescribe?

It seems a bit random.
You can ask, and see what they say to you.
If not, they're about £65 for 2 months supply.

Chocolatesaltedballs · 06/09/2023 23:07

@TheShellBeach thanks. I might just go ahead and order them. Going to check up some more reviews first though to see how quick weight comes off.
