Not going to be fat and 50!

MrsMigginsCat · 01/01/2022 21:09

Every year I say I'm going to do it, but this year I'm determined that I have to lose it. I've got my 50th birthday in May and a once in a lifetime trip in October. I don't want to be fat for either.

I've ordered a treadmill. I like walking, but don't like going out before or after work when it's dark so I thought this would get me back into being more active. Eating wise I'm going to follow Fast800 for a boost at the beginning. I'm the kind of dieter that needs to see results quickly otherwise I'm in danger of giving up so I'm hoping this will give me a decent loss at the start and spur me on.

Anyone want to join me in an accountability thread?

Over 10k steps again today. Not likely to get anywhere near that tomorrow as have a day in the office and a long and tedious meeting that is bound to overrun too.

Anyone want to be a Fitbit buddy? Not sure how I add people though!

I'm so glad i started over the holidays, I cannot fit this in with work and I would be losing my commitment if this was all I could do. I do long days so I'm floored by the time I'm finished. I finally up earlier this morning. I wanted to for a while but this was the first time I managed it. My day starts at 8. I got half my walk in. I think going forward this might be my only option. Getting up at 6.30, going for an hr walk, then show and work. It's so hard though to go from being in bed to practically running! I know it's not really running but I've got it up to 5.5 miles an hr. Anyone have any tips on how to get up and just jump to it?

Roominmyhouse · 18/01/2022 20:39

Sorry @dudsville can’t help as I’m not a morning person!

Did my second personal training session yesterday and my usual class tonight. Still eating we’ll sleep fingers crossed for another lb off when I next weigh in!

catwomando · 19/01/2022 12:08

Fell off the wagon yesterday as I had some horrible work stuff going on.

Had a single chocolate and a glass of wine.

Still under 1000 calories though so not terrible I suppose?

fishonabicycle · 19/01/2022 12:43

Just to check in - this is relevant as I managed to lose well over a stone at around age 50! The way it finally worked for me (after being unhappy with my weight for most of my life - I'm only 5 foot so that much made a big difference), was eating consistently at a calorie amount that was maintainable - for me that is around 15/1600 per day, and then weight/resistance training to improve my shape. I've been very happy with my body over the last 5 years (first time almost ever). The main thing I learnt is to not starve/eat too little as invariably you get hungry and feel like you have failed when you binge, and to do weight training for aesthetics. good luck all 👍

dudsville · 19/01/2022 18:54

So I managed an hour this morning, 3 mile walk and 8 mile cycle. It's a little tough fitting it in before work but I how to get more efficient. And am still doing the 16:8, though it was tough Monday as meetings meant I had to push the window forward which meant it closing at 5! Need to forward plan that better.

That is not falling off the wagon! Do not beat yourself up over still only having 100 calories!

Good day food wise and had a 45 min walk after work. My mother in law bought me some chocolates Monday and I had 3 last night. I’m might have 2 tonight. Not ideal but in usual times I’d have scoffed most of the box by now 😆

Biscuitsneeded · 19/01/2022 20:06

Can I join you? I'm 50 in March and I started trying to lose weight in September. Had probably 3 - 3.5 stone to lose. Managed to lose 2 of that by mid December but stopped the dieting over the Xmas holidays (am a teacher and sadly food has always been a reward, and it felt like this even more after the term we had had...). I put on about 5 pounds over 3 weeks at Xmas, but have been back on the wagon for about 10 days and have lost 2lb. I won't make it to my goal weight before my 50th but f I'm even near I will be delighted.
I'm far too busy to follow any complicated diets but am basically trying to have 1200 - 1500 calories a day. Enough not to feel starving but few enough to gradually lose weight. Good luck to you all.

antivaxxer123 · 19/01/2022 20:22

Too late

Biscuitsneeded · 19/01/2022 20:35

Sorry, @antivaxxer123 ?

dudsville · 19/01/2022 20:49

@Biscuitsneeded

Sorry, *@antivaxxer123* ?
I think that's a mistake, welcome @Biscuitsneeded! We have lovely people joining most days, it's a constantly growing thread. Very supportive. Are you doing anything in airin to the calorie counting? Or is that the tried and true method that helped you before Christmas?
dudsville · 19/01/2022 20:51

I just checked up these and can't see that they posted here before so I do think that was a mistake!

Biscuitsneeded · 19/01/2022 20:56

Thanks for welcoming me. I should be doing lots more exercise but I struggle to find time. Trying to fit in at least a decent walk at the weekends though, and at least in my job I don't stay sitting down for very long. I meant to say that I feel much better in myself already even if not at the ideal weight yet. I really hope I manage to stay a reasonable weight once I stop dieting and switch to trying to just eat sensibly.

MrsMigginsCat · 19/01/2022 21:01

Welcome @Biscuitsneeded.

1200-1500 calories a day sounds doable. I've given up on Fast800 - for me it's just to low and I'm starving. I've settled around 1000-1200 per day which gives me enough for 3 meals which I'm trying to keep relatively low carb.

Bread is usually my downfall, but I've managed over two weeks now without any at all. For dinner tonight I had a Korean mince thing that DH was having from the Hello Fresh box, but instead of a tortilla wrap I had mine in an egg wrap with lots of extra salad. It was really nice and very filling.

Steps today have been rubbish. Have been stuck in a very boring meeting for virtually all day so only managed 3.5k. Couldn't be bothered to go on the treadmill when I got home either. I'm wfh again tomorrow so will get a few cheeky sessions in again then in between stuff.

Would love to join if that's ok. Am 48 (49 in April), hopefully a big holiday for the 50th. I'm starting to slowly get into fasting, trying to bring myself down to 2 meals. DH working from home is not helping as he snacks a lot.

MiniCooperLover · 19/01/2022 21:14

And 3.5 st to lose: on HRT and need to cut back on wine, empty calories.

Biscuitsneeded · 19/01/2022 21:18

@MrsMigginsCat 800 would be too low for me too on a working day. I would honestly keel over! 10000-12000 is achievable, if challenging, and you will hopefully see some inspiring results.
50 feels like a good age to take oneself in hand once and for all!

FabNotFat · 20/01/2022 07:05

Good morning .
I weighed today and have lost 4lb so a good start. Need to lose 3 stone .

I started HRT patches a couple of weeks ago so not sure how I a, going to feel over the next couple of months . All good do far but I am aware it can change.

Lots going on at work and I have also realised I most likely have adhd so am having a lot of realisations .

I am not going to be fat and 50 though …..

FabNotFat · 20/01/2022 07:08

I am doing 16/8 and keeping calories to 1200 or lower.

Plan to start C25k again soon and I see a PT weekly as I had surgery last year. My muscle strength is pretty good just need to improve my cardio and burn some calories .

This thread is very supportive even though I haven’t really posted. Thank you .

catwomando · 20/01/2022 09:09

Hello @Biscuitsneeded you are indeed most welcome, and it's never too late to start eating healthily to make us feel fab and (over)50. Grin

I weighed in at 66.1 today, so still losing slowly . That said it's DS birthday today and there will be cake Smile.

1.4 kg lost so far ( 3 pounds in old money) in 2 weeks. It doesn't sound much, but I'm thinking about how it would feel to be constantly carrying round a bag with 6 blocks of butter in it. Horrifying and satisfying in equal measure. My mental picture is to be adding more blocks of butter into the bag over the weeks.

The not drinking in the week thing is helping me to keep calories down. Love wine but feel better for not drinking it (if that makes sense?) . What's everyone else doing with alcohol? I'm sticking to weekends only.

MrsMigginsCat · 20/01/2022 16:02

I definitely agree with the not drinking in the week thing @catwomando I'm a wine fan too, but since hitting surgical menopause, I really know I've had some the next day! The last two weekends I have had an excuse to drink, but we've got nothing on at all this week so am going to try hard to resist. Although that Friday after work wine is the best one of all!

Wore my keep fit gear all day today. Luckily no video meetings! Got to my 10000 step target already by jumping in the treadmill for 10 minutes here and there. I've also started C25K again although in the treadmill. Not sure I'm ready to brave outside just yet. I started in the first 2020 lockdown and got to week 7 but had to stop when I got diagnosed with endometrial cancer and had to have a full hysterectomy. Surprised myself as W1R1 was actually pretty easy even after all this time.

catwomando · 20/01/2022 16:52

@MrsMigginsCat how bloody scary for you. Glad they got it out. Such a fast-onset menopause must be a shock for the system though. I hope you are feeling better now.

I've always been able to eat what I like, but after menopause I seem to get chubby just looking at a biscuit. Shock

Roominmyhouse · 20/01/2022 17:24

Yeah I don’t really drink in the week anyway, trying to keep booze to a minimum for a while but out on Saturday so will have a few G&Ts then!

Not eaten much today as have horrible stomach ache. Not sure why but hope it goes soon!

MrsMigginsCat · 20/01/2022 17:34

Thanks @catwomando. I'm all good now. Turns out I have Lynch Syndrome which is a genetic mutation that increases the risk of getting endometrial and bowel cancer. Bit scary, but means I get regular screening so hopefully if I get anything else it will be caught early.

catwomando · 21/01/2022 10:45

Wohoooo! 64.5 today so have lost a full 2 kilos (4lb)

That's 8 blocks of butter. Grin

How's everyone else getting on?
