Mutual support thread for people with a lot of weight to lose. Part III

This is a mutual support thread for people who have a lot of weight to lose. The original thread started with a poster who wanted to lose 9 stone and has evolved from diet advice to offering each other mutual long term support. Most of us have started in the morbid obese range or with a BMI in the high 30's (ish).
Everyone is welcome, regardless of where you are on your 'journey'. We have some inspiring stories. But also lots of us are muddling along, sometimes doing well and sometimes not so well.
We're all at different points. Some have lost lots of weight and are now maintaining. Others part way through a big weight loss and others starting out. We try to offer encouragement, congratulations or consolations where needed. We are respectful of different approaches and recognise that everyone has their own unique set of circumstances.

@Rousette, so typical your DH lost his appetite and you didn't. I think I have to be actually vomiting to lose my appetite. Hope you're on the mend soon.

@SnowyMouse, wow, six weeks is a horribly long time. I hope you are feeling ok now. I imagine you feel weak as well from all the inactivity.

Roussette · 07/04/2022 07:10

Engelbert That made me laugh! I think back in 1964, I lost my appetite once for 40 minutes, but it is a very hazy memory!

SnowyMouse · 07/04/2022 17:49

Yes, it was too long. I am feeling better, just wish I hadn't put on 12 lbs...

ScottishBeth · 09/04/2022 17:56

@SnowyMouse so sorry to hear that! 6 weeks must have felt like forever! So glad you are feeling better now. It must be frustrating to have put on 12lb, but it will come off again!

@EngelbertHumperdinck welcome! I hope your first few days are going ok? It must have been a shock to have been told that. Do you have any support from your GP or anyone? Glad you are here anyway!

@Roussette how are you doing now?

I haven't had a great week food wise. And as a result I have gained 1.3kg, back up to 85.2. It's not a surprise, and will be fine. It'll come off again. I did have some ice cream today, but it was planned and I was meeting a friend. And it was delicious!

SnowyMouse · 09/04/2022 18:00

You're right, I can lose it again. Ice cream sounds yummy!

Roussette · 09/04/2022 18:06

Thank you @ScottishBeth... yes I feel fine, just a residual cough that isn't too bad. Ditto DH but his is worse of course Grin

I haven't weighed, I'm dreading it. I can cope with 4 or even 5lbs.... anymore and I get panicky!

snowy that's so difficult, it's hard to keep a check on weight when you're poorly.

Personally I'm looking forward to salad season, a grilled chicken breast and all of that stuff. I've eaten too much bread lately, it really piles on the weight for me but I love it.

Wombatsandstuff · 10/04/2022 16:04

Well Wednesday I gained like 2 kgs, up to 161.6kg oops. My bad, my dad and step mum were away for the week so I ate a fuck ton of stuff. Anyway I’ve reset my self this week and got some motivation and discipline so hopefully on Thursday I’ll have lost some weight. Wish me luck lol, I think I need a little bit of luck on top of my discipline,

I was gonna have a chocolate fudge cake today for puds when we went for a Thai meal for lunch, but I decided not to. So go me.

Roussette · 10/04/2022 16:48

Well done on the lack of choc pud!

EngelbertHumperdinck · 10/04/2022 23:41

Well done @Wombatsandstuff. It's so tiring to make those decisions over and over again, isn't it?

I'm doing very well on cutting out the Coke despite the fact that my last three cans were sitting in the work kitchen hoping for someone to drink them. I nearly caved on Friday and asked someone else to take them home for me. 9 days now!

Not done amazingly on other food (but definitely less sugar overall) and have been doing low impact HIIT. Tried on swimming costumes yesterday with a massive mirror in front of me and was horrified by how enormous I am.

Wombatsandstuff · 13/04/2022 17:32

Well I’m back baby. Lol.

Anyhoo. I lost 2.8kg this week woo. This week and last week I’m doing an hour long walk Monday - Friday. Usually it’s Monday to Wednesday with the occasional Thursday. And I’m going to the gym 3 times a week on top.

Thejugglestruggle · 16/04/2022 18:18

How is everyone getting on? The chocolate temptation is real this weekend 😕 plus the pull of a cold white wine in the sunshine 🤣

Been a couple of weeks since I last checked in and I've lost 3lbs in those 2 weeks. Pretty happy about that as I've been out a couple of times plus on my period for today's weigh-in.

Down to a smidge under 204lbs now..

SW - 250lbs
CW - 204lbs
GW - 155lbs

Next mini goal is 199lbs. Obviously a big one to get back into the 100s again, plus I'll then be over half way. Writing this down to make me accountable 🤣

Wishing you all a lovely sunny long weekend x

Roussette · 18/04/2022 10:40

Hello all Smile

I've finally plucked up courage to get on the scales... I've put on 4lbs, but I'm not actually surprised.

I've been away, we both had covid and I just ate too much, quite simple really!

However, I've been for a healthy shop up at Aldi, and I'm going to walk 5 miles this afternoon so it's back to it really...

Well done juggle and wombat and Engelbert that's really great on the coke resistance Smile

Well done on getting back on the scales. Really hard when you know you've indulged. Am sure all that healthy food and walks will reverse the small gain in no time!

Am encouraging my husband to eat all the leftover chocolate out of the house. So tempting to snack on it, esp in the evenings I find!

ScottishBeth · 24/04/2022 15:29

Hello everyone,

Sorry I've not checked in in a couple of weeks!

@EngelbertHumperdinck it sounds like things were really good when you posted! Getting someone to take the cans home was a very sensible plan - there's no benefit to proving you can resist them, better just to remove the temptation! I remember a little while ago meeting a friend at a cafe. And she was ordering drinks. I asked for diet coke but they didn't have any and she bought me coke! She's very slim and didn't know I'm trying to lose weight - I was gutted! Anyhow it doesn't matter that you've not done amazingly overall, reducing sugar is a fantastic start! I hope you weren't too disheartened trying on swimming costumes as well.

@Thejugglestruggle well done. That's amazing. I hope it's not too long till you meet the next goal. Maybe you've already met it?

@Roussette glad you are not too discouraged - 4lb is ok. Hope the last few days have gone alright.

I haven't been doing too well the last weekend. But I've basically maintained I think. So that's good. I have made a couple of decisions. The first is no more burgers on my own. This is quite a big deal as this entire time I've basically had McDonalds delivered every week on the day I weigh in. I'm on board with having a little treat. But it's kind of ridiculous. And the other is there's one day a week where I have nearly 3 hours to kill between work and a social thing I do. And no matter how hard I try, I end up eating lots of food, which is slowing my weightloss and costing money. But I've found a class in my gym that's at the perfect time, and will be a lot of fun, and will cost less money than I usually spend on food. It's a handstand class. And I've always wanted to be able to do a handstand. So I'm delighted! Unfortunately I won't be able to go this week, but from next week I will. I think having some structure in that downtime will help a lot.

I was 83.6kg this morning. Fingers crossed for the next week.

Roussette · 24/04/2022 17:27

@ScottishBeth Well done on the gym and handstand! I just couldn't!

I do think distraction is a good thing... if I have an eating day, and we all know what they're like, I make sure I just do something, go somewhere keep myself busy and distracted.

My scales are a bit spasmodic at the moment, I haven't put on more and have probably lost 1 lb... that's fine, there's been a lot of chocolate I''ve eaten!

Good luck everyone 😍

SnowyMouse · 25/04/2022 12:33

Hi all,
I was in hospital for 6 weeks, and have put on 12 lbs.

SW: 214 lbs
CW: 181 lbs (25 april)
GW: 144 lbs

Roussette · 25/04/2022 18:49

Oh Snowy, I'm so sorry to hear that. Being in hospital for all that time must've affected you a lot.
I do hope you're feeling better now. We're here for support if you need us Smile

mamabeeboo · 25/04/2022 19:28

Hi all
I've just finished paying for an online coach. She basically said the same things as everyone else - I mean we all "know" how to lose weight right? But she gave some good tips in terms of eating slowly, chewing your food. I set a timer on my phone, so I don't finish a meal before 20 mins. Usually I end up feeling satisfied.

Also, instead of eating between meals if you stock up on protein (or veg) you feel fuller. So my plan was to just keep adding more veg every time I felt hungry.

30 min walk a day. Now the weather is getting better, I can stick to this more.

I don't plan on renewing with her because she was pretty expensive, but I plan on taking these learnings, sharing it and hopefully helping others. Joining this group for support!

SW 324 lbs
CW 305lbs
Goal 250lbs

Roussette · 25/04/2022 19:53

I second the walking, and if you have somewhere near you with a slight incline, try it out.

There is a very gentle hill near me that I huffed and puffed up when I started, but I do it when I want validation that what I'm doing is working because it is much easier than it was

ScottishBeth · 26/04/2022 07:34

@Roussette yes to distraction. A little while ago I made a list of things to do when I wanted to eat. I might dig it out. And inclines make all the difference! The other day I was running. When I run it's super relaxed and all about having fun! I run as fast as I want for as long as I want, then I walk until I want to run again. Anyway this day I felt like a gazelle, while it was flat. Then we got to a very gentle incline and I managed about 3 metres! Haha!

@SnowyMouse so sorry to hear that. I hope you're doing better.

@mamabeeboo hi! Those sounds like really sensible strategies. And well done on your weight loss so far. Welcome to the gang!

Today will be a good day! I am working 12 hours and will only have one break. So I have had breakfast, and in my bag I have my packed lunch and a few snacks, and that's all I'll eat. I can't buy anything as money is tight at the moment (just to say I'm very lucky compared to a lot of people, I'm just having to vastly cut back on unplanned expenses - I don't want anyone to be worried about me or anything). So I know I won't be popping to Costa or the vending machine.

mamabeeboo · 26/04/2022 07:40

Heading to work now. Breakfast and lunch and fruit plate packed for the day.
Always get really hungry

ScottishBeth · 26/04/2022 10:04

@mamabeeboo what kind of things do you eat? I never really know if feeling hungry is something that is inevitable or if we should be able to lose weight without really feeling hungry!

Oops. Sorry for double post.

SnowyMouse · 26/04/2022 12:55

Thanks for the kind words, I'm feeling much better.
