Mutual support thread for people with a lot of weight to lose. Part III

alphaechokiwi · 10/10/2021 18:29

This is a mutual support thread for people who have a lot of weight to lose. The original thread started with a poster who wanted to lose 9 stone and has evolved from diet advice to offering each other mutual long term support. Most of us have started in the morbid obese range or with a BMI in the high 30's (ish).
Everyone is welcome, regardless of where you are on your 'journey'. We have some inspiring stories. But also lots of us are muddling along, sometimes doing well and sometimes not so well.
We're all at different points. Some have lost lots of weight and are now maintaining. Others part way through a big weight loss and others starting out. We try to offer encouragement, congratulations or consolations where needed. We are respectful of different approaches and recognise that everyone has their own unique set of circumstances.

@WeightlossKin well done on your weight loss! That's amazing.
I've lost 6lb this week which takes me to 17lb total loss.

WeightlossKin · 16/10/2021 20:49

@HerRoyalWitchyness that's amazing! What are you doing to lose weight? Hope your shoulder is still healing nicely.

alphaechokiwi · 17/10/2021 08:43

@HerRoyalWitchyness - that a great loss. You must be pleased.
@WeightlossKin - massive congratulations on reaching such a big milestone. It's a fantastic achievement. Re the run up to Christmas, I find I can usually accommodate a night out into a week's plan. I skip alcohol, deserts etc, and make allowances over the rest of the week to compensate. I think it's tough to maintain that discipline when you have a lot of social occasions in a short space of time. But it is do-able though if you have a lot of stuff going on...
I've had a small loss this week and I'm now 78.0kg. I'm happy it's all going in the right direction although the last few weeks have been slow. Happy Sunday everyone...

What are you doing to lose weight?
Honestly I just use a mix of WW meals and intermittent fasting. That and the fact my appetite is finally going back to what it used to be, so im only really eating one meal a day and maybe some fruit as a snack. (I was onbtablets notorious for weight gain and increased appetite but I've cone off them and my body seems to be settling back to normal after 6 long years)

Hi all, newbie here, hope it’s OK to join. I’m heavier than I’ve ever been - within 3kg or so and getting desperate to avoid future health problems. I’m 45. I have 7 stones (49kg) to loose and it feels impossible at the moment. I’ve tried, succeeded and put back on this weight twice / once with a slimming club and once with shakes.

Any inspiration, hints or tips would be so welcome Smile

wombatsandadoor · 17/10/2021 12:00

Back to the gym tomorrow (been off for two weeks due to holidays) with a new trainer, bit anxious. But she’s meant to be a good trainer so we shall see.

alphaechokiwi · 17/10/2021 12:14

Welcome to the thread @UpintNorth I think I know how you are feeling because I started a year ago with 50kg to lose to get to a healthy BMI.
I have 12kg to go now. It is absolutely do-able and there have been a few successes over this series of threads which are very inspiring.
My experience is that's it's very important to get your head around how long it's going to take. And that while it can sometimes feel like a slow and frustrating journey, you look back and see how all the small steps add up to big losses. Once I had accepted that I'm in this for the long haul, I set out a series of mini goals which have been really helpful with keeping me motivated. I also developed strategies in advance to help me with the inevitable slips, failures and loss of motivation. Anticipating that these are bound to happen, and being ready for them has been key for me.
Finally, having an honest look back at my relationship with food and 'dieting', and using all that past failure experience to help me with a plan of action. I do intermittent fasting, combined with calorie tracking with a relaxed day every weekend when nothing is off limits. But this is only what works for me and everyone needs to find something they themselves can do sustainably.
The very best of luck, I wish you every success and I hope you find this thread helpful and supportive.

@alphaechokiwi thank you for your kind comments. The slow and steady approach definitely resonates - I’ve lost a lot of weight too quickly in the past and ended up in A&E with a gallbladder removal.

I’ve just broken down the weight into 1kg per week, which seems doable. I’m going to look at calories per day this evening.

Thanks again. I know I can’t give up trying Smile

SnowyMouse · 20/10/2021 13:59

I've started to lose again, stuck at 13 stone 12 for 9 days, then 13 11.75, then 13 11.25!

wombatsandadoor · 20/10/2021 14:14

I weighed in on Monday at the gym and I have gained 400g in 2 weeks. Which isn’t too bad for being on holiday and eating out most nights.

Hopefully losing next week,

SnowyMouse · 20/10/2021 14:48

Fingers crossed for you, @wombatsandadoor

wombatsandadoor · 20/10/2021 14:59

Thank you @SnowyMouse

Hi everyone,
Sorry it's taken me a bit of time to find the new thread. But glad to see so !any new people (and regulars from before).

@WeightlossKin - it sounds like you're doing well. The thing about wasting food is interesting. Many times I've realised I'm basically forcing myself to finish a burger, or something. But then I've realised that I'm not enjoying it at all. So if I'm not enjoying it, and it's not as if I need the nourishment (maybe if it was broccoli), then it's wasted whether I eat it or throw it away! I try to remember now that I don't have to force myself to clear my plate, as there's no point.

@HerRoyalRisesAgain welcome! And how is your shoulder now?

@Zebracat how is your hip doing now? Still improving?

It's two weeks since I last posted (I did weigh myself once in between, bit didn't get chance to post on here), and I'm down 1.2kg in that two weeks. I'm pleased with that. Especially since I went away last weekend and had takeaways, posh breakfasts, ice cream. So now down to 86.3kg. hopefully I'll get back down to my first mini-goal in the next week, and keep it off this time! Though I didn't put too much on!

Since it's the new thread, I'll summarise. I have no idea when I started, but I was 90.4kg. I am pretty short so that is well into obese territory (BMI over 35). My goal weight is 64kg, and I don't think I've weighed that since I was a teenager. Honestly I doubt I've been under 80kg in at least 10 years (can't be certain because I used to weigh myself in stones!). I started off well, then slowed down, then had a long covid relapse, and decided to take a break so I could start fresh. I came back nearly a month ago and was pleased to have stayed under 90kg.

I'm not counting calories or anything like that, just trying to consider what food I'm eating (sometimes I feel like I eat the way a 4 year old would if they were allowed). On non-work days I have a restricted eating window, so I get a bit of intermittent fasting in there, but I couldn't go through a work day without breakfast!

HerRoyalWitchyness · 23/10/2021 21:02

@ScottishBeth my shoulder is healing nicely. Have to have physio to make sure I regain full movement in it.

I've not lost any weight so far this week but seeing as I lost 8lb last week I'm not going to complain!

alphaechokiwi · 23/10/2021 21:57

Hi everyone, lovely to see some positive news from you all. @ScottishBeth - that's a great loss. Sounds like whatever you're doing is working.
@SnowyMouse - I'm so glad the scales are moving again for you..
@wombatsandadoor - that's pretty impressive after 2 weeks holiday!
I'll be weighing in tomorrow... I've had a reasonable week. Not as much exercise as I'd planned, but ok foodwise.

Zebracat · 23/10/2021 22:11

Hi everyone. @ScottishBeth, my hip continues to improve, but I am not swimming at all and doing shorter walks. I was on holiday last week, and unfortunately I think the xtra alcohol and puddings will show when I weigh tomorrow. Never mind

alphaechokiwi · 24/10/2021 07:47

I'm glad to hear you are a bit more mobile @Zebracat and I hope you get back swimming soon.
This morning I'm 77.3kg which is a decent loss for the week. Next week I won't be able to go swimming as I'll be juggling half term childcare and work. I'm going to try a few home workouts and maybe get a bit of cycling in if I can.
I hope everyone is having a good week.

Hi
Can I join? Newbie here. Would love to lose a stone before Christmas. But lacking motivation again. Any tips?

Cw 12st 61lbs
Gw 11st 6lbs

ScottishBeth · 24/10/2021 11:58

@HerRoyalWitchyness glad your shoulder is healing well. I've seen several people with dislocated shoulders at work (in a hospital, not a supremely dangerous workplace which causes injuries) and it seems like the pain is horrible! 8lb even over 2 weeks is really good, so I wouldn't worry about STS this week.

@Zebracat I'm glad your hip is improving, and hopefully you can do a bit more soon. I hope you had a nice holiday!

Glad you've had a good week @alphaechokiwi - and hopefully you survive half term!

Welcome @Loveprosecca it looks like whatever you were doing has worked well. How did you lose that weight before? Motivation is so difficult!

Zebracat · 24/10/2021 18:51

Hi everyone, bad news on the scales today. Back up to 98.7. Oh well Iknow what I need to do.

alphaechokiwi · 24/10/2021 18:54

Welcome @Loveprosecca - well done on your success so far. My advice is to be consistent with what's worked for you so far if that's reasonably healthy and sustainable... If I've learned anything from the last year it's that consistently is not terribly exciting but it works. I've quoted this a few times before - losing weight takes discipline rather than motivation. Good luck!!!

wombatsandweightloss · 25/10/2021 13:26

I have lost 2kg in the last week. Yay. Super happy with that.

HerRoyalWitchyness · 25/10/2021 13:35

I've put on a pound but I'm putting that down to the cake I scoffed yesterday BlushGrin

alphaechokiwi · 25/10/2021 13:48

@wombatsandweightloss that's really excellent - you must be really pleased.
@HerRoyalWitchyness - I have a personal rule never to weigh myself the day after cakeGrin

OP posts:
ScottishBeth · 27/10/2021 12:35

Sorry about your gains, @Zebracat and @HerRoyalWitchyness. They will happen sometimes though! I hope it comes off soon.

@alphaechokiwi - an excellent rule for life Grin ( I'm a bit disappointed by the limited emojis Mumsnet offers here!)

@wombatsandweightloss that's amazing!

I am doing fine, midweek. Very hungry just now but lunch is nearly ready!
