Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)

Can I join? I'd like some accountability! I'm going to try low carb (I like it), but I haven't planned for this, so it'll be based on whatever I've got in this week.

HostessTrolley · 02/04/2021 20:10

I think the more the merrier tbh :)

Thisseatisnotavailable · 02/04/2021 22:09

I'm on a planned week off from doing just packs this week, as I've seen parents and planning to see friends this weekend. It was going well and I was still being sensible but I've just had a bit of a binge Blush. I had a couple of hot cross buns that I hadn't planned to and then just had a fuck it moment and ate a few extra things too. Nothing compared to what I've eaten in the past at times like that, but feeling shit now all the same.

I have my bf's zoom birthday drinks tomorrow, then if (fingers crossed), the weather holds an al fresco Sunday roast and wine with some other friends on Sunday.

I hope to then to get straight back on plan on Monday, hope I don't struggle too much.

NeonStones · 03/04/2021 11:18

Hi, could I join this thread? I’m in my 40s and so is my BMI. I’ve lost weight before and have always been overweight but I’m at an all time high. Desperately want to lose weight as I really feel the impact of the extra weight now in a way I didn’t when I was 13 stone something. I’m over 18 stone and 5ft5.

I’m starting a lower carb diet on Monday, and trying to up joy exercise. On a 12 week plan and hoping I’ll come out of that a good deal lighter but mostly I just want to feel fit again. Even when I’ve been fat I’ve been reasonably fit, maybe not yay I’ll do that aerobic workout fit. But I could walk for hours and I ran. Now I’m really noticing that even the walking is so much harder.

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 03/04/2021 16:55

Hi all meant to pop in yesterday but had a busy one! Not weighed this week as don’t want to demotivate and have had a cold and been decorating whilst on a/l so convenience good has featured more than would normally!!

Have managed a few 16 hour fasts and hardly sat down so hoping that has helped!! Ready to jump back on though!!

Sorry to those who have had a tough week Flowers

Hoping Easter weekend brings renewed hope and energy (not fuelled by too much chocolate!! Hmm

wombatsandaplant · 04/04/2021 14:46

I keep putting on and losing the same damn kilo. Still. It’s been like this for like three weeks. I can’t seem to get my calories down, I’m doing good on eating lunch and tea but then I just stuff my face with chocolate and crisps. I’m giving up chocolate completely as of end of today and I’m only going to have crisps on days where I work out with the personal trainer. As that’s the only way I can exercise at the gym at the moment, it’s still closed till April 26th but they have personal training in the car park under the gym. So I’m doing that three times a week and I’m burning 500-800 calories depending on what we do.

I just need to get the food under control. But I’m really struggling.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/04/2021 15:01

I had to not have crisps at home. Only bought a bag for days off with drinks. If they were at home, I eat them. It took months, but now it's fine.
Actually found 2 packs in a cupboard from like 3 weeks ago. I forgot about them!
If you told me that year ago I would not believe it😂
So it passes @wombatsandaplant
Good idea to buy only on certain day. It will work well

I'm starting this week - I think Easter is a fairly bad weekend for me to start, but I'll be putting my heart, soul, and flab into it!

PollyDarton1 · 04/04/2021 20:06

Hi! I'm reporting for duty.

36, and weighed in at 300lbs last Monday. (21st 6lbs) - highest ever adult weight. I have ADHD so binge eating is a way of controlling my emotions and stresses and since having my son nearly 5 years ago I've put on 6 stone. Have never been light but am just beyond heavy now!

So since Monday I've been eating around a 1900 cal diet (so deficit of 700 or so cals), low intensity exercise (obese workouts) and sticking to a high protein, lower carb diet,

I've lost 7lbs in my first week but obviously that'll slow. And remarkably I don't feel too deprived at the moment - I'm allowing for the occasional mishap and want to take it slow and steady to keep it off. I think going on ADHD meds will help but if I can get a decent amount of weight off in the meantime I'll be happy.

I haven't set a goal weight but tbh I'd be happy with 13/14st (size 14/16) as I know it'll be easier to maintain (like I did most of my 20s).

cutebutscary · 04/04/2021 20:09

Hi all 😋 joining in with you all if that's ok ? I've been yo-yo dieting all my life , had a gastric band 14 years ago which failed miserably, just had surgery to remove it , and now desperately struggling not to massively balloon ( even more than I already am ) I've been offered to go on the waiting list for a bypass but the surgery having the band out totally knocked the stuffing out of me and I'm taking ages to recover so don't really want further surgery ( I think the thought of needing it makes me feel like even more of a failure ) I'm a stress/comfort eater and unfortunately I have a very stressful life , nothing about which I can change . Wish I could wear funky clothes . How are you guys getting on? Are you finding anything helps ?

Queenie6655 · 04/04/2021 20:14

Hello all

Some fab progress

Have not weighed myself
But walked a lot this week
And a week of using MFP
Eye opening

Had a bing last night with some Easter eggs
Felt awful this morning

Anyway great day today
So much energy

We CAN do this

I have 70 lbs to lose

Newpuppymummy · 04/04/2021 20:51

I’ve been not too bad today. Could definitely have gone worse.

I need to move more

MrsOmelette · 05/04/2021 06:24

So tired. Had v soft lamb and puréed veg yesterday (temporary root canal has come out, dentist in a week) then one small bar Aldi 85% choc. I have become so disinterested in food, I actually did a 24 hr fast by accident in the week! I know this is a result of low-carving but the day also seems long and a bit depressing without food to think about/look forward to. Drinking lots of cups of tea (unsweetened soya milk). Today here the windows chill is bad, going to feel -6 all day but think I’ll wrap teens up well and drag us out on beach dog walk. Can’t wait for bedtime.

chalkyc2 · 05/04/2021 11:08

Well I've completed 8 weeks of my weight reduction project. 12.9kg down, 37.6kg to go 😬

I have held strong whilst my kids guzzle Easter chocolate. Am keeping going. I've got 4 more weeks on the fast 800 then I need to up the calories a bit, which will feel wrong as I'm not anywhere near my target. Let's see!

I'm really enjoying my peloton bike - it's great to be able to do proper sweaty exercise at home where no one can see you!

Keep going everyone.

cutebutscary · 05/04/2021 13:06

You all are doing so well , plenty of inspiration ! I weighed myself this morning . I'm 15 stone exact but at 4 foot 11 inches tall I'm really rotund . I was 18 stone 6 tho about three years ago so at least I'm not back up to that . Does anyone take pain meds that cause weight gain? I'm on pregabalin which causes weight gain as it increases appetite ( I think ) sometimes I feel like everything conspires against me not to lose weight . I've got a dog pram I use like a dimmer frame so I can go to the park and exercise though and I'm determined it's not going to beat me this time !

PinkArt · 07/04/2021 22:53

What's everyone's trick for getting back in the right headspace if you've got a bit off track with the sensible eating? I think I'm back in the right mindset again after gaining a bit last week but a small voice in my brain keeps choosing to point out how much easier the gaining is than the losing and I need to quieten it down before I get back it 'what's the point' and eating badly again

SchrodingersImmigrant · 07/04/2021 23:05

Tell taht small voice to fuck off.
Like literally out loud say "oh fuck of stupid. I am doing well and will keep doing well". I do it like that sometimes.

I work well powered by angerBlush

PinkArt · 07/04/2021 23:41

Ha, @SchrodingersImmigrant that might do the trick. I'm powered by anger at work this week so can just channel a little this way

SchrodingersImmigrant · 07/04/2021 23:47

Whatever gets the job done. 🙈
The trick is to honestly say things out loud. It just takes on a different dimension.
That goes for everything. So I talk to myseelf aloud a lot😂

FlatEarthling · 08/04/2021 07:27

I'm going to have a new start today.

I've had a week of feeling very sorry for myself and a house full of Easter food.

Being fat make me miserable, over eating makes me miserable.
I was doing so well. I can feel I've gained some extra pounds so I'm going to avoid the scales tomorrow.

FatCatThinCat · 08/04/2021 11:04

Me too @FlatEarthling it was all going to well but the past week or two has been a disaster. I've eaten more chocolate since Sunday than I've eaten in the entire previous 12 months. Need to reboot and focus.

SparklyTroll · 08/04/2021 12:15

Hi! Can I join? This thread is exactly what I was looking for this morning. I’m feeling so unhealthy and weak. I weigh 296lbs, I’m 34, I have 4 kids (youngest is 14 months)
It feels like such a massive amount of weight to lose I don’t know where to begin, like others have said Iv tried every diet under the sun, most recently the Cambridge diet which I only lasted 2 days! I need to make gradual changes I can sustain! Already got some great tips from reading through this thread!

NeonStones · 08/04/2021 12:49

Hope everyone who is wavering can get back in the right mindset, put it behind you and move on. One bad day or even bad week doesn’t need to become two. Onwards!

I am a few days in to my plan, I’m giving Second Nature a try. It’s lowish refined carb and I’m managing fine with that as I’m quite happy eating a lot of vegetables. Proper low carb where you can’t have anything remotely carby destroys me though! So far, so good. I’m quite enjoying it and it’s nice to be cooking properly again.

FlatEarthling · 08/04/2021 13:45

@SparklyTroll welcome! Fresh blood always needed.
Most of the other diet threads are for skinny people, we want properly fat here!
