Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

TrinityWaves · 24/01/2021 15:55

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)

@PinkArt, well done! Please don't feel pressure to share weight, it's certainly hard.

I'm only open now (first time ever) as I'm finding it helped in a wake up call to how obese I am and accountable to how much I need to lose.

Neonlightning · 26/03/2021 23:58

@Donteatpurplebroccoli, well done.

Don't forget if eating slips over the holiday week, it's just a week in your journey. One week may impact the scales in the very short term, but you can easily readjust.

Thisseatisnotavailable · 27/03/2021 09:05

Starting weight 18st 11.5lb. bmi 41.4
Today 15st 4lb. bmi 33.6
4lb loss this week.
(I'm doing a VLCD).

I can't believe I've managed to stick to plan for 12 weeks. I've still got a long way to go, but I am super happy with that. I am planning a few days off next week, now that we are allowed people in our garden we are having my parents down for lunch, (and exchange of Christmas presents at last). Also my dh wants to do a roast dinner on Easter Sunday, then I'll be straight back on plan, hopefully for another 12 weeks straight after.

FlatEarthling · 27/03/2021 09:27

@Thisseatisnotavailable Well done! I'm tempted to try VLCD in a few weeks/months if my initial weight loss drops off.

So, three and a half stones off for you, how does it feel? Any improvements?

Thisseatisnotavailable · 27/03/2021 09:43

Thanks FlatEarthling. It feels great, I'm currently fitting into size 16 jeans, I've even gone so far as to get rid of my old size 18s and 20s as I'm determined that I will never need them again. Even little things like I can do my shoe laces up easier, climb the stairs without getting quite so out of breath. Hopefully in another 6 weeks or so I'll be in size 14s, which would be just in time for when I'm back to work (hospitality) which would be great if I could go back 3 sizes smaller than when people last saw me.

The first few days of doing a VLCD are tough while you get into ketosis, and I'm not gonna lie I'm a little apprehensive about coming off of it this week as it can be difficult to restart, but once you're in ketosis it's easy as you're not hungry at all. I use one called Slim & Save, they have a really good variety of packs so you don't get too bored of them.

QuestionableDanceMoves · 27/03/2021 19:55

@Neonlightning I have a big holiday with the kids next year- the whole of the summer holidays in the USA- it’s been postponed twice because of covid and I know I won’t enjoy it if I don’t shift some weight before it as the head will be unbearable.
Other than that my goals are to not be in pain when I wake up in the morning, to be able to sit in one position and not seize up etc but those are body size related

I go to bed each night with the intention to get up early and exercise but then morning rolls around and I’m exhausted so I choose extra time in bed- vicious circle.

Just need to give myself a kick up the arse!

Neonlightning · 27/03/2021 22:18

@QuestionableDanceMoves, that's a great goal for when we can travel again. I'm sure there's lots of fun activities you will be doing (at some point!).

Don't forget weight loss is 80/20, so you can successfully drop weight if your diet is right even without exercise. I know how hard the early morning exercise motivation can be. I do find though the more I exercise the more energy I have to then want to exercise. It's just getting started Smile.

For exercise, I've also found finding the right type for you is essential. For me, HIT classes are awesome as in and done in 45 minutes, spin classes are lots of fun with the music (my gym has rnb, disco, pop, musical themes), and weights make me feel strong.

I know covid restrictions are different around the world, but I'm also using non food rewards each time I lose 5 kilos. Like a massage, a movie, a pedicure, etc.

MrsOmelette · 28/03/2021 06:18

@Neonlightning non-food rewards are such a good idea. I could get myself a book for every 5lb lost. I really want to get to the size where I can go sea-kayaking with my daughter, we are blessed as live by the sea and it calls to me all the time.
I’d really like to join this thread properly if that’s ok? I had a total of 100lbs to lose, I’m low-carbing and now my bmi is 37, which is coming down slowly. I’ve only weighed myself since January, before that I just couldn’t bear to. Since Jan I’ve lost 1st 9lb but I’m very tired (youngest is a very, very bad sleeper) and I crave the fake energy from rubbish food a lot. Resisting though!

HostessTrolley · 28/03/2021 17:26

26/1/21 251lb/114.2kg BMI 43
05/2/21 244.4lb/111.1kg BMI 41.8
12/2/21 243.8lb/110.8kg BMI 41.7
05/3/21 245.5lb/111.6kg BMI 42
12/3/21 244.5lb/111.2kg BMI 41.8
19/3/21 244lb/110.9kg BMI 41.7
26/3/21 243lb/110.5kg BMI 41.6

Another not great week, but a small loss so at least its going the right way. Lots of difficult family stuff going on so its hard to focus but I’m trying to at least make small choices better.

Interested in the youtube walking workouts though, will look that up earlier as maybe just fitting 20-30 minutes on my own in might help :)

Hope everyone has a great week Smile

FlatEarthling · 29/03/2021 06:40

@HostessTrolley, it's going down! And even at a small rate, if this had happened a year ago what size would you be now?

I'm very impatient so I want big losses but I also love my food so I'm stuck. I hope you can have a good few days before Easter.

Let me know what you find on YouTube, I've been enjoying exploring various workout, although mainly from the sofa! Planning stage only.

FlatEarthling · 30/03/2021 19:52

There is a thread in chat
'If you are 5 feet 6 what do you weigh?

I'm that height. I haven't commented because in over 100:replies I'm by far the fattest. And that's after losing 21lbs.

I feel so disheartened. I've never been as low as some of the people in that thread, never.
I'd just be lose, saggy skin if I get anywhere near.
I'm feeling very sorry for myself.

TrinityWaves · 30/03/2021 20:51

I saw that thread FlatEarthling and thought there's no chance I'm commenting, I weigh about twice as much as most of the women/men on there!

The heat has been a good motivator for me today... 1) it makes me less hungry and 2) the thought of summer clothes!

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 30/03/2021 21:01

I was BMI 44 at my heaviest (22 stone) when I started being healthy. Now 16 stone 12, BMI 34.9. Even if I never lose another pound I am really happy to have got this far!

FlatEarthling · 30/03/2021 21:49

I was disappointed that I tried something on that was too small for me. I keep forgetting I have only brought myself back down to the weight I was this time last year and I still have 5 stones to go. Or more.

chalkyc2 · 31/03/2021 07:36

I also saw that thread. Similar to the impact that threads which start off saying how terribly disgusted people are with their weight and you're there thinking yes! Exactly me too....and it turns out they are 11 stone or something.

Oh well. I have a similar set of stats to you @FlatEarthling. Actually I have 40kg to go and at my current weight loss rate it's going to take me as many weeks or more, despite stubbornly sticking to 8-900 cal a day atm. I'm keeping going though - what other choice is there?

FlatEarthling · 01/04/2021 12:41

I have had 2 crappy days. I wrote a separate post about it in 'weight loss chat'

I'm tired, very stressed and tomorrow can't come fast enough.
This weeks weight in will be a gain.
I don't care, I'm too miserable. I'll feel better at 7pm when I've finished work for a week.
I've promised myself to work out tomorrow and for the next week

Giving up today though.

FlatEarthling · 02/04/2021 09:23

Starting weight 252lbs

05/2/21. 243 lbs
12/2/21. 240 lbs
19/2/21. 240 lbs
26/2/21. 238 lbs
03/3/21. 238 lbs
12/3/21. 234 lbs
19/3/21. 232 lbs
26/3/21. 229 lbs
02/4/21. 229 lbs

FlatEarthling · 02/04/2021 09:49

It's only not a gain because I have an "upset stomach "

I think it's a result of over eating not a bug.

HostessTrolley · 02/04/2021 10:50

@flatearthling - I haven’t seen your post elsewhere but everyone has less good weeks - draw a line under it and move on. Sorry to read that you’re feeling rubbish x

I’m poddling along. Daughter home from uni for another 3 weeks. Shes a recovering anorexic who’s struggling at the moment - trying to regain weight lost during term time. If I am overtly trying to lose weight it will make things harder for her so I’m trying to make small choices that are better - a solero instead of a magnum, tonic and a slice of lemon instead of g&t, that kind of thing, with the aim of getting onto it properly when she goes back.

26/1/21 251lb/114.2kg BMI 43

26/3/21 243lb/110.5kg BMI 41.6
02/4/21 242lb/110.1kg BMI 41.4

Slowly slowly - but hoping to be under 110kg next week - even with easter.

FlatEarthling · 02/04/2021 11:06

@HostessTrolley as a mum to a teenage daughter you have my sympathy.
My daughters sometimes skips meals. I wonder if she is doing it because she doesn't want to get fat like me? I'm keeping an eye on things .

If you can stay the same weight and not gain while she is home that's a good plus point. If she goes out of the house maybe you can fit in some sneaky exercise?

HostessTrolley · 02/04/2021 11:16

@FlatEarthling - she had a year out of education and spent over half in hospital so it got pretty bad - she’s trying hard and her boyf is amazing - but I gained a lot during her treatment. She tries not to compare but I don’t want to make it harder for her - she’s well under half my weight but 3” taller :-(

I’m getting out with the dogs etc and staying positive, down a little is fine with me just now

PinkArt · 02/04/2021 18:01

I put back on the last two pounds I lost this week. Trying really hard not to be as hard on myself as I feel, as I knew the way I was eating would mean this was the result. Stressy week at work so I had more wine and chocolate than is compatible with weight loss.
I'm going to try to use it as a reminder going forwards that I know the only way to manage this is staying on top of it with every single thing I eat

QuestionableDanceMoves · 02/04/2021 19:22

I’ve stayed the same this week which I’m amazed at as I’ve barely moved all week.
There’s a lot of stress in my life at the moment and when I’m stressed my body shuts down so much so that I’ve spent most of this week freezing cold, aching and feeling sick so whilst I’ve not eaten loads I’ve been stuck to the sofa or in bed.
Hoping the fact we are making progress with my daughters health issues and that I’ve found a few jobs to apply for will be enough to alleviate the stress to the point I’m not unwell. It’s so bizarre because in my mind I don’t feel stressed but my subconscious clearly is

Newpuppymummy · 02/04/2021 19:34

Please can I join? I’m 5 foot 5 and I’m by far the heaviest I’ve ever been. Although lost 3lbs in the last two weeks. My bmi is 49 and I would love to get it down to 40 as an interim.

Newpuppymummy · 02/04/2021 19:37

I need to lose 4 stone 3 just to get to 40. Think I might aim for 45 as my first target
