Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

TrinityWaves · 24/01/2021 15:55

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)

@GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy and @GrannyOfDragons
Welcome to you both!
We love a chat here so keep it coming. At least if we are messaging then we aren't eating!
Weigh in day is Friday. Weigh when you like but report in on Fridays.
Feel free to type up what you eat every day.

I'm trying hard to keep my calories for my evening meals but I work at home and it's so hard Monday toFriday as I know I still stress eat.
I'm trying to eat lower calorie choices but they still mount up!
Everyone I live with is thin and fit! I'm very much on my own on this diet.
Which is why I'm here a lot.

FlatEarthling · 22/03/2021 22:27

@caramelchaos hello to you too! I've been dieting for 2 months and I'm still not as thin as you!
Sounds like you are in the right frame of mind to diet at the moment.
Keep positive!

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 23/03/2021 18:00

How's everyone's day been? I replaced my usual Greggs bacon roll with yoghurt, fruit and lean ham on wholemeal toast (I'm hungry in the morning!) Then carrot sticks, hummus, an apple and a yoghurt for lunch. Dinner is Mexican spiced chicken breast, sweet potato fries, a little sour cream and salad. So not bad. Only downside is someone at wine has given me a lovely bottle of wine. The bastard. :D
May ask DP to hide it....

FlatEarthling · 23/03/2021 18:41

My DH is hiding my chocolate in the shed!
I made a lovely Waldorf style salad today but even low calorie Mayo puts the total up.
Cabbage, onion, carrot, chopped apple, some raisins and 15 grams of Walnuts ( I wanted more!) low fat natural yoghurt and mayonnaise
I calculated it as over 400 calories! Stupid mayonnaise

I'm resenting going to work now ( dining table) as I'd rather devote myself to my diet and exercise while this resolve is still with me.
I'm sure I could be thin and gorgeous if I had more time to myself.

I've ordered myself dumbbells! Just little ones. But as I'm only going to really have time to work out on weekends I thought I'd put more effort in. Plus I'm off for the bank holidays.

I hope everyone is keeping on track, I'm not sure how I'm still here after 2 months, I'm stunned!

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 23/03/2021 19:28

Two months is fab! I'm interested to see how you get on with he dumbbells. When I had more confidence and went to the gym, I loved weights so much more than the cardio stuff. I loved pushing myself in a controlled way and always felt great.
BTW does anyone else subscribe to Gregg Wallace's site, Show Me Fit? I find it really good with some great recipes.

caramelchaos · 23/03/2021 19:29

@flatearthling hello! I'm currently in dangerzone territory.... Just in from work but don't have evening meal until the DCs are in bed in about an hour. I've only had 2 shakes and some cold cuts today (doing low carb) but since getting home I've been in the fridge eating all of the ham and cheese ☹️ still low carb but totally unnecessary! Now I feel like I've ruined today's efforts. I've got some spicy chicken salad for dinner then will have to glue my mouth shut to stop the snacking later. Does everyone have a specific time of the day that's worst for mindless eating?

PinkArt · 24/03/2021 21:00

@caramelchaos Evenings! I've managed to break the snacking at my desk habit relatively painlessy for now, but my brain won't shut up about how it wants some more chocolate every night.
I've found the only way I can do it is with a snack that's around 100 cals - something like a fun size mars or a tiny (really bloody tiny) cupcake. That way I'm not depriving myself but I know the damage to the cals in vs out count

Thisseatisnotavailable · 25/03/2021 00:55

Did you get your dumbbells yet FlatEarthling? I've hurt my arm, and have a crick neck (old & knackered Grin), so I've not done any weights in a while.

I also got some chocolates for my birthday, that my dh has hidden somewhere in the house.

I have been torturing myself tonight looking online for recipes. My parents are coming to visit next week; can't wait we've not seen them for 6 months. We were supposed to be going up for Christmas, but then we went into Tier 4 (remember that Grin), so couldn't go in the end. Anyway, hopefully we'll get a day with nice enough weather so we can have lunch in the garden and I'm trying to decide what to cook. I'm going to have a few days off plan, with Easter weekend as well and then straight back on it on the Monday.

Good to see so many of you still going strong.

FlatEarthling · 25/03/2021 07:49

@Thisseatisnotavailable

Yes, dumbbells here. I haven't used them yet. And I only have tiny ones.

I've checked out Caroline Girvan on You Tube. She seems lovely. No chatting! I just need to narrow it down to a very easy beginner level. Some of her stuff is for superhumans!

Not only that but inspired by @MyVisionsComeFromSoup I have bought a rowing machine! I did 20 minutes but my Fit Bit tells me my heart rate didn't go over 100, so I'm obviously lacking in effort.

I have no clue where this willpower has come from. I feel I still have all the hardwork left though. I'm only just back to prelockdown weight so if I stopped to think about it I'd be really demoralised.

If I'd done this last year...etc..or had just stayed the same....etc
Anyway, I will carry on while I can. I'm under no illusions that this diet will last and be forever as my track record isn't good. But I can hope.

If I can lose 20lbs from here I will be the thinnest I have been in 15 years.

chalkyc2 · 25/03/2021 08:29

I have kettle bells and have found a kettle bell app. And recently bought a peloton bike. It all has to help, right?!?

FlatEarthling · 25/03/2021 17:45

I can't believe it's a weigh in day tomorrow!
This week has flown by.
Last few have dragged.

I know I'm hogging the thread a bit, it's just no one in real life is in the least bit interested in my diet.

DH is wonderful but he doesn't care if I'm fat or thin as long as I'm happy. I would like it enormously if he notices I'm thinner in a few months. Lowest I've been in years is 14 stones.

I was about 12 and a half stones when I met him 30 years ago. When I was 16 years old I was 10 and a half. I'm hoping to end up somewhere between the two as I'm assuming there will be excess skin that will weigh a bit.

Neonlightning · 25/03/2021 21:04

Happy Friday.

SW: 147KG CW: 112 KG Height: 178cm Age: 34 Health: PCOS

1.2kg lost this past week. Surprised as I had a burger and fries one night for dinner with friends, then have enjoyed 2 80 gram Easter eggs. No regrets!

I've certainly noticed a slow down in the weight loss, but still happy to have lost 35 kilos since the start of the year.

Thisseatisnotavailable · 25/03/2021 21:36

I have a rather dusty kettle bell currently acting as a doorstop, what app are you using, I should dust it off and give it a go.

My exercise this week has been clearing out a load of crap from the pub (3 car fulls to the tip), and jet washing and scrubbing the gardens.

Keep chatting away, it's good to share. You're doing really well, you're going to hit those targets this year for sure.
Neonlightning · 25/03/2021 22:27

@FlatEarthling agree it's so hard that weight loss is such a grind. That's great you have such a supportive partner.

FlatEarthling · 26/03/2021 06:49

He's not supporting my diet, he's not at all interested. He wouldn't care if I ate everything in sight or nothing, it's all about personal responsibility with him.

I've eaten myself to this state ( body broken) and he's left me to it.
Not his fault but I would have tried to intervene if he's been 7 or 8 stones overweight.

Again, he didn't put the food in my mouth. He's still like a skinny teenager and doesn't understand addictions.

Thistles24 · 26/03/2021 07:38

Wow, everyone’s doing so well! It’s inspiring!
I started on 08/03/21 at 128kg, and weighed 120kg on Monday. First mini goal is 115, which puts me at my pre pregnancy weight from DC3. (Should maybe add, he’s 2 and a halfBlush).
I used to love 30 day shred, but have been wary of doing it at this weight and having been inactive most of the year. I discovered walking workouts on YouTube, and I’m really enjoying them. No need to change into sports gear, so it’s easy to fit in a 15/20 minute one. Ive dropped down a trouser size since I started, and notice my clothes fitting better too!

FlatEarthling · 26/03/2021 07:50

Starting weight 252lbs

05/2/21. 243 lbs
12/2/21. 240 lbs
19/2/21. 240 lbs
26/2/21. 238 lbs
03/3/21. 238 lbs
12/3/21. 234 lbs
19/3/21. 232 lbs
26/3/21. 229 lbs

FlatEarthling · 26/03/2021 07:52

@Thistles24 That's a great start! Keep going!

PinkArt · 26/03/2021 11:53

I don't think I'm quite up to sharing my actual weight yet, but I'm down 2 pounds this week, so 11 since I started this mid-Feb.
BMI creeping down and is now 39.2.
3 pounds off my first goal - as I'm taking it step by step - and getting down to my pre lockdown weight.
I looked up what I need to hit to get out of obese and into overweight and it feels a looooong way off, so smaller targets is the only way it feels possible.

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 26/03/2021 12:04

Well done everyone! Some good losses and lots of motivating chat on exercise!! I’ve managed a few bike sessions this week which seems to have helped as made it to my first half stone off plus a tiny bit extra with a 1.3 kg loss so I’m happy!! Smile
In danger zone of a week off work now though so got to not slip into holiday mentality! Have decided to decorate to keep me busy!
Hope everyone has a good weekend!

FlatEarthling · 26/03/2021 14:52

@PinkArt I'm only just at prelockdown weight after 2 months of fairly hard work.
I'm trying not to think about anything too far ahead. Just getting into the next stone bracket, then getting into single figures for the pounds, then Lee's than half a stone to next bracket
So my targets look like this..

18 stones
Target 1 -17 9
17 6
16 13
16 9
16 6
15 13
15 9

Etc, etc

PinkArt · 26/03/2021 14:58

@FlatEarthling My targets are similar. My first was for the stones number to go down one, which it did this week. Next is to get to the prelockdown weight, which I'm hoping is just a few weeks off and then I think aiming for half a stone off as each target should help psychologically. I know I got a bit 'fuck it' over lockdown, with not seeing anyone, so I think setting small goals means I should avoid getting into 'whats the point' mode again

QuestionableDanceMoves · 26/03/2021 17:52

I’m 1.5lbs off this week which I’ll take as I haven’t done any exercise really and food hasn’t been great either.
I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I don’t want to be this weight, I know what I need to do to lose weight but have zero get up and go at the moment.
Need to get my head in the game sharpish

Neonlightning · 26/03/2021 23:54

@QuestionableDanceMoves, a loss is a loss!

For motivation, do you have any goals which are non-weight/body related? For example, one goal I have when I reach my goal weight is to take kite surfing classes. Something I have always wanted to do, but simply too big right now.

Post covid when I can travel from Australia, other goals include hiking the Inca trail, white water rafting the Grand Canyon, and a cycling tour of Cuba. I find these types of goals really helps me.

It's dorky, but I have an Excel spreadsheet where I list all my goals (weight, health, fitness, travel/activity goals), and can view it on my Mac or iPhone whenever I feel I need it.
