Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)

Hi @chalkyc2 not too late at all.

Please share some of your low calorie meals with us.

Well done on the loss so far.

I'm a massive Pepsi Max drinker and polish off a 2 litre bottle every day. I have now switched to caffeine free Diet Coke as my blood pressure is high.
I'm 52. Being overweight has knackered my knees. I'm avoiding the GP as I was sailing very close to diabetic zone otherwise I'd probably have had my vaccine too. It's only because they have no idea how much I weigh!

FatCatThinCat · 06/03/2021 10:09

I lost 0.3 kg this week, taking me to 112.9 kg from a starting weight of 140 kg. It's a tiny loss but a loss is a loss and considering I've had 2 binges this week due to sleep problems, I'm well chuffed. I'm still heading in the right direction.

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 06/03/2021 10:56

I’m a pepsi max drinker - I know I need to give it up but can’t quite face it yet!! Blush @chalkyc2 in awe of you for having done it and glad you’ve joined us!!

chalkyc2 · 06/03/2021 11:03

I'm currently drinking a LOT of fizzy water. A squeeze of lemon or lime helps.

FatCatThinCat · 06/03/2021 11:06

I've recently given up diet coke. I really miss it. But I was drinking 4 or 5 cans a day and didn't realise it was linked to high blood pressure. I've recently started having problems with my blood pressure which it turns out, coincides with my starting to drink more coke. So out it went. I do miss it though.

Hi I’m glad to have found this thread. The forums can sometimes be a scary place for overweight women! I have about 10 stone to lose and I could use some support. Feel like things are out of control at the moment, and I’m starting to notice my health is suffering because of my weight. I was big in the past but always felt it was under control and now it’s just spiralling.

I’m going to use MFP to log calories and try to get some movement in every day. I’m knackered all the time so it’ll be a challenge! I did get into quite a good walking habit at the start of lockdown so need to get that back.

Has anyone spoken to their GP about weight loss? I was tempted to see if they could prescribe me something to help (I did have limited success in the past with orlistat) but I chickened out thinking they would be too busy to deal with me right now.

HostessTrolley · 06/03/2021 12:01

Hi all,

Not been around here for a while, difficult family stuff going on but anyway.... nice to ‘see’ lots of new people joining.

Got on the scales yesterday for the first time in a while, weight up a bit but not as bad as it could have been. Planning to ease myself in today (pizza delivery for tonight already booked in by DH so damage limitation I guess..) and go back to fast800 tomorrow. I’m not going to leave it for Monday lol

SW 251lb/114.2kg BMI 43 (26/1/21)
05/2/21 244.4lb/111.1kg BMI 41.8
12/2/21 243.8lb/110.8kg BMI 41.7

05/3/21 245.5kb/111.6kg BMI 42

Sigh.... but actually feeling quite positive and ready to get back on it Smile

FlatEarthling · 06/03/2021 13:59

@gotalottolose I agree lots of people are 'only' a stone or two overweight. They weigh the weights I dream of. I'd LOVE to be just 13 stones.
No many places aimed at the very fat.
And I like the fact that this is anonymous.

I can't get lighter/ thinner fast enough. I am 7 stones overweight ( was 8) but I'll be happy to lose 5 stones. I think I'll find exercising easier then.

Thisseatisnotavailable · 06/03/2021 17:28

Afternoon all. 2.5lb off for me this week, just 0.5lb away from hitting my first target of 3 stone. I am now also out of severely obese bracket and now am 'just' obese. Never been so happy to be obese before Grin

I want to start getting more consistent with my exercise next week, I've had too many lazy days recently.

FlatEarthling · 06/03/2021 19:52

That's a very good result @Thisseatisnotavailable.

I'm jealous!

ouchmyfeet · 06/03/2021 23:49

That's fabulous @Thisseatisnotavailable - well done! I still have almost 2 stone to go to get me to merely obese.

Definitely recognise the overwhelming feeling when you think about how much you need to lose, I had a bit of a whinge about it over on the low carb bootcamp thread this week. I've lost almost 2 stone, I need to do that five times over to even get close to a healthy weight and it does get me down sometimes.
I'm just trying to keep on going and focus on the small wins and feeling better in myself. I'm resigned to it being a multi-year project

Thisseatisnotavailable · 07/03/2021 15:37

Thanks 😊.

I'm doing totally meal replacement at the moment and I'm finding it quite easy for now. But even at this rate I'd have another 5-6 months until I reach my target weight.

I don't know though if I'm going to be able to keep it up when we come out of lockdown. I'm already getting invites to go out for lunch/drinks as soon as we're allowed. I obviously really want to see my friends but I am worrying about socialising again. I'm thinking I'll try and switch to low carb and stick with IF too.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 07/03/2021 15:42

Build up good portion habits and the socilising shouldn't cause issues. When I plan on drinks and dinner, I just eat bit less on the day before and naturally on the day after. I have bot smaller lunch on a day and that's it. If you still don't want it to be free for all, consider what you order and go for something bit lighter (not salads though because in restaurants they are often same calories like pizza...). It's doable.
You can do it!

FatCatThinCat · 07/03/2021 15:48

Why does it take a couple of hours (and a tin of quality street) to put on 1 kg of weight, but a week of restrictions to lose it. That doesn't seem fair.

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 07/03/2021 19:08

@FatCatThinCat I’m feeling your pain!! Was feeling great on Friday but really not done well this weekend have plenty of reasons but ultimately aaarrggghhh!!!! Just need to get back on it tomorrow!! Determined whatever happens going to stay present and be honest on here as so easy to just disappear again ...

FlatEarthling · 09/03/2021 11:32

Has anyone taken measurements? I keep meaning to but every time I remember I'm at work.
I did take a second set of photos today. I'm 6 weeks into the diet but took my first set of photos a month ago. I have lost one stone but I look exactly the same. I'm not even back to the weight I was this time last year.
The T shirt I'm wearing in both sets of pictures will be first to the charity shop when I'm thinner!

However I will not be defeated.

No clue what is on the menu today. I don't know what I want.
If in doubt it's tending to be sugar free jelly and low fat cream!
I might branch out into celery and Philadelphia!

HostessTrolley · 09/03/2021 12:03

Ooh celery and Philadelphia sounds good! I defrosted some salmon yesterday but now I don’t fancy it - but it’s defrosted so I need to cook it. It was a waitrose yellow sticker job so is posh salmon but I still can’t find any enthusiasm - probably because I’m trying to swerve the open packet of Jammy dodgers that someone has helpfully left by the kettle...

chalkyc2 · 09/03/2021 12:16

I've paid for the online version of the plan I'm on - and the one good thing about it is I only have the food for the pre planned meals in the fridge (apart from the kids food) so just make what I'm told everyday! Today was a green smoothie for breakfast, leftover tofu curry for lunch and chicken stir fry for dinner.

I'm not quite back to pre lockdown weight of this time last year yet. And 45kg to target. Sigh. But I read a FT article yesterday talking about the link with covid death numbers and countries with high levels of obesity. It kind of inspired me to get myself sorted.

Neonlightning · 09/03/2021 12:52

@FlatEarthling, I've heard it takes 10 kilos for other people to notice. Which I think is 1.57 stone?

I felt different at 8 kilos down but didn't really notice it. At 10 kilos I had people comment. At 15 kilos you could really tell in photos.

The best thing I'm finding now at a lower weight than my starting weight, anything about 5 kilos loss is showing up in photos. Which I have to admit is motivating.

chalkyc2 · 09/03/2021 15:55

I've lost nearly 9 kg and can really hardly notice - clothes just a bit more comfortable (but were tight before!). My husband has joined me on the health kick and the bastard has lost 11.5kg in the same amount of time and has also basically lost his entire belly. He has much less to lose than me too. I'm currently not talking to him 😂

FlatEarthling · 09/03/2021 16:00

@Neonlightning I haven't really seen anyone in 12 months so I suppose I'd need to lose 10kg from the weight I was this time last March, which is a bit of a way to go.

@chalkyc2 I have the opposite problem with DH. He is still wearing the same size trousers that he worse when we got married nearly 30 years ago. Bastard!
And I have to cook for the family, including hungry teenagers.

I'm having soup tonight while they have pesto pasta. I don't finish work until 7 and I started at 7!

FatCatThinCat · 09/03/2021 16:14

In our house, as head chef, if I'm on a diet we're all on diet (although the others can still snack). I've lost 28 kg so far and feel it more than see it. I don't have constant back pain anymore and I can walk comfortable up the stairs. But has started complaining as his trousers have started falling down. Grin

FatCatThinCat · 09/03/2021 16:15
  • But DH has started complaining
ouchmyfeet · 09/03/2021 20:02

I haven't taken measurements, I really can't be bothered. I've lost almost 2 stone and I don't think it's visible yet. I can see it myself if I study a photo of me 6 weeks ago compared to one taken today, but it's not dramatic and I wouldn't expect anyone else to notice yet. I'm tall though, which makes a difference. Past experience tells me it takes 3-4 stone for me before people notice. I'm okay with that though, I hate people commenting on my weight.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 09/03/2021 20:57

I went with
In 2 months you will feel it, in 4 months you will see it, in 6 months you will hear it.
I was pleasantly surprised when i got these earlier. 😁
