Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)

@SchrodingersImmigrant - what are your stats? I think you'd had a good loss before this thread?

I'm not known for my patience or my sticking power so good results are really important to me. I'm hoping the next few weeks I will really feel the difference.

Hope anyone lurking on the thread pops in to join or come back.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 09/03/2021 22:27

I am now at 43kg loss😁
It was very frustrating when my husband lost less than I and kept getting compliments, while I didn't (though apparently it's because peoole don't want to mention it to women ? from what I learned on another thread).

I had plateaus (recently a long one for few weeks), I had hungry days, I have day off every week to keep normality etc. I don't rush it. I am re learning my good eating patterns from before and braking bad habits permanently takes time.
I never stuck to anything too restrictive so I had no other option than go slowish with 1kg a week (sometimes 1.5 when I was 150kg in April/May last year)
Funnily it wasn't covid what set me off on weight loss but certain furniture "fat shaming" me😂 I might keep it worever. Or frame pic😂

Everyone here is doing well. Any loss is a loss and a positive. I calculated that I put on half a pound a week to get where I was last year. So if all this adds up, a half a pound loss also adds up. So peeople should keep positive because even that "little" is positive 😁

But everyone is different and I admire people who can stick to more restrictions and loose faster. I just can't 🙈

I did take a photo at the beginning but accidently deleted it which was quite annoying, as I was and am a bit of a camera dodger so won't really have any before photos to compare to. I have been taking photos of my face though since mid Jan, and I think I can see a difference there, not least that in the later photos I look happier. I have today taken a full length one and done some measurements so I'll have some mid-way comparisons.

I've gone down nearly 2 clothes sizes, (I can fit into some size 16 jeans, but not others). It did make me think though that even though I've come so far, I still have a long long way to go.

I finished week 3 of C25K today, it too me 5.5 weeks mind, but I'm getting there slowly. I'm trying to use my weighted hula hoop more often too and add some more weights in.

Good luck with everyone weighing tomorrow.

FlatEarthling · 12/03/2021 07:08

Starting weight 252lbs

05/2/21. 243 lbs
12/2/21. 240 lbs
19/2/21. 240 lbs
26/2/21. 238 lbs
03/3/21. 238 lbs
12/3/21. 234 lbs

Slow going. I'm waiting patiently to look/ feel different.
I've been wearing elasticated trousers for so long!

I want to lose 11 pounds to get me to my lowest weight in recent years. Then the real work will start. I'm trying not to think about saggy skin but I expect as I'm in my 50s it's inevitable.
I wish I'd had this level of commitment years ago.

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 12/03/2021 09:10

Well done @FlatEarthling! Smile I somehow managed a 1kg loss (thank you to the 4 fasts I managed !) as did not have a good food or exercise week! V relieved to have lost! Hope everyone ok

FlatEarthling · 12/03/2021 09:57

@Donteatpurplebroccoli That's really good.
I seem to remember you joined Mumsnet just for this thread??
Wouldn't it be fantastic if this was the trick and this thread keeps you going!

This is the longest I have stuck to a diet in several years.
I'm grateful that I spotted it at the right moment. Lots of the other diet threads are with people starting from the weight I would consider my target!
I have lots of mini targets in my head.
I'd like to lose 3lbs this week! And preferably one stone in the next 6 weeks.

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 12/03/2021 18:09

@FlatEarthling good memory I did join just for this thread yes! Smile glad I did too the amount of weight to shift can feel overwhelming and logically I know I have to stick at it but the reality is hard!! Enjoying reading people’s successes and knowing I’m not on my own in this! I’m really trying to change my all or nothing mentality and this is definitely helping with that !

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 12/03/2021 18:10

I like your idea of mini targets too!

HostessTrolley · 12/03/2021 18:18

Minute loss for me this week but tbh I haven’t really stuck to it as I’ve been distracted. One of those weeks.

SW 251lb/114.2kg BMI 43 (26/1/21)
05/2/21 244.4lb/111.1kg BMI 41.8
12/2/21 243.8lb/110.8kg BMI 41.7
05/3/21 245.5lb/111.6kg BMI 42
12/3/21 244.5lb/111.2kg BMI 41.8

Made curry for dinner, I’m having mine with a heap of steamed kale rather than the rice and bhajis that the rest of the family are eating - but I like kale anyway :-)

chalkyc2 · 13/03/2021 08:38

I'm currently not on speaking terms with my scales as after spending 3 days losing a kg, weighed yesterday and 0.5kg back on for no reason! Hadn't gone off my plan apart from a cup of tea with oat milk (and dear god if that's as bad as it gets!).

My new toy arrived 2 weeks ago - a peloton bike. Hoping the half hr spin sessions will help with generally speeding up my metabolism.

Husband continues to lose more weight than me and is already talking about what he wants to do when he gets to his target weight (he's halfway - 10kg to go). 😬. Told him I didn't think that will be for about a year for me and he looked nonplussed - presumably he does have actual eyes and can see what I look like??

FatCatThinCat · 13/03/2021 09:53

Well done on the losses everyone. I've lost 0.4 kg this week, which is a small but miracle loss. I've had 3 binges this week so was expecting to gain. I'm so relieved I haven't done any damage.

HostessTrolley · 13/03/2021 10:03

It’s quite a weird time for weight loss at the moment, I’ve got flights booked for 12 weeks’ time so normally the thought of a sunbed would be motivating but realistically it’s not likely to happen. Feels a bit grey and ‘meh’ just now, I really want to want salad and piles of steamed veg, what I really want is dumplings and pasta!

Thisseatisnotavailable · 13/03/2021 11:35

3.5lbs off for me this week, and I've hit my 3 stone mark. Now I just need to do that twice over again.

There's some sun coming through the clouds here at the moment, so I will drag myself out for a walk later.

Well done on everyone's losses.

ouchmyfeet · 13/03/2021 16:10

I weigh on Mondays so nothing to report yet but I think I'm looking at another week of eight staying the same or maybe a small loss. Bit gutted as I'm sticking to the rules. This is the way weight loss always goes for me, 2 weeks of decent losses followed by 2 weeks of total stalling Sad

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 13/03/2021 17:14

Well done on the losses everyone and congrats @Thisseatisnotavailable I dream is being 3 at lighter that’s amazing!! @HostessTrolley I know what you mean - uni was quite happy with salads stir fries etc when we had that milder spell thinking of spring/summer to come now it’s so cold again I’m obsessing about curry and toad in the hole!! So tonight we’re having butternut squash and almond curry then next weekend toad in the hole with oat batter instead of flour! Worth a go!! Grin

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 13/03/2021 17:19

Sorry really should have read that first!!
3st not at!
I not uni!!

claracluck1978 · 13/03/2021 20:32

Another 1lb off here, making 12lbs overall

TrinityWaves · 13/03/2021 22:51

Weigh in... 263 lbs (-3.6 total)...I'm yo-yoing with motivation but really want the weight off! Well done to everyone, keep going!!

FlatEarthling · 16/03/2021 11:40

I had a bad day yesterday and ate double my calorie allowance.

Food still makes me better when I'm stressed. And quick food tends to be higher calorie. Today, I've gone and bought myself 2 packs of Cuppa Soup. Haven't had any for 20 years.
Slim a soup golden vegetable may only be 51 calories but it tastes like dish water. It's really grim. No wonder I'm fat!

Minestrone next time.

I hope everyone is ok?

FlatEarthling · 16/03/2021 11:54

Cheese!! Why is it so high in calories for such a small amount.
I ate very rough estimate of 285 calories while making lunch. Just while prepping, not as part of my lunch
This is obviously something I need to work on.

HostessTrolley · 16/03/2021 12:33

I made the mistake of buying brie when i was at the supermarket, so i feel your pain on the cheese front Confused

SchrodingersImmigrant · 16/03/2021 12:39

I have over half a kilo of brie in a freezer in 40g portions😂
I have always at east 5 types of cheese at home.

#cheeseforlife

SchrodingersImmigrant · 16/03/2021 12:39

Btw usual brie from supermarket last a long time amd it absolutely does get better with age so keep it, take bit, keeeeep it and the last bit will be fucking heavenly

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 16/03/2021 14:46

I’ve never liked cheese - so many people have tried to find some that I like over the years and I have to say No I’m glad I don’t like it!! I really don’t need another calorie heavy food to like!! Grin

sadly someone did persuade me at the grand age of 32 ( a fair few years ago!!) to try cheese cake which I wish they never had as I had to concede that is nice!! Wink

@FlatEarthling food is my go to when stressed too Flowers hope today is better despite the cuppa soup!! Confused

Thisseatisnotavailable · 17/03/2021 14:18

I'm with you FlatEarthling and Schrodingers

Cheese is my biggest weakness, I nibble on it far too much. As I'm doing a VLCD atm it relies on being in ketosis so I can eat it as it's protein without risk of coming out of ketosis. Except I've been having far too much of it recently, I really need to cut it out fully again.
