Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

TrinityWaves · 24/01/2021 15:55

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)

Afternoon all. Good to see you back PurpleBrocolli.

I may have over done it on exercise at the weekend as I’m really aching yesterday and today 😂

I also do 16:8, I’m not a breakfast person so tend to have my eating window between 12 and 8pm. I use an app called Zero which I find quite motivating.

wombatsandaplant · 02/03/2021 13:53

Can I join please? My bmi is definitely over 40, currently sitting at just under 60...

Anyway, Ive got a rowing machine on order, should come this week. Which I’m looking forward too. Something to do while the gym is shut.

I’m doing weight watchers. So far I’ve lost 1.3kg in the 2 weeks I’ve been doing it.

FlatEarthling · 02/03/2021 14:22

Hi @wombatsandaplant the more the merrier. Weigh in day is Friday.
You don't have to weigh in on a particular day, just report in.

What rowing machine have you picked? I'm tempted by one but I already have a dusty exercise bike.

wombatsandaplant · 02/03/2021 14:35

@FlatEarthling we went for the waterrower. Bit on the expensive side but I need one with a good weight limit, the cheaper options are good too I think but they have much lower weight limits not suitable for me. Plus it looks nice. I wanted a concept 2 but the only place that had them in stock was charging an extra 400 odd pound, than normal price.

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 02/03/2021 19:48

@Thisseatisnotavailable thanks and really enjoying it so far surprised me how quickly I feel better and more in control! I’ve been using fastic ap it’s ok and has helped motivate but only want to use the free version so can’t seem to adjust lengths of fasts - can you go that on zero? Once have settled in think I’d contemplate an occasional longer fast.
Hi @wombatsandaplant we just got an exercise bike! Hope your rowing machine arrives soon!
@Thisseatisnotavailable feel your pain overdid it on the excercise bike in the excitement of it being new!! Grin

Thisseatisnotavailable · 02/03/2021 23:46

purplebrocolli, I only use the free version and yes you can set different lengths of fasts, and set alerts for them etc. You can also log weight, calories consumed and sleep if you want. There are also challenges you can join, like hours fasted in a month sort of thing. You don't get anything for them except a fanfare and confetti, but hey who doesn't like their phone giving them a little celebration Grin

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 03/03/2021 06:53

@Thisseatisnotavailable thanks for the info think I’ll swap can’t beat phone confetti!! Grin

FlatEarthling · 03/03/2021 08:18

I've had a midweek weigh on and I'm up 2lbs.

I'm the same weight I was on 11th February.
It's the same 2lbs I have been up and down for weeks.

If I had less to lose I wouldn't worry. I'm not expecting straight downwards but I would like a general loss.
Results are motivation! 7 weeks in and I'm 12lbs down. ( was 14)
With so much to lose I'd have expected more
I'm the same weight as I was 3 weeks ago.

I have increased exercise. ( fast walking)
Calories according to Fit Bit App have been around 1300. Last week I was super b and they were 1200. I'm going to have to cut back more aren't I?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/03/2021 08:58

Is your digestion ok? I had this when I had issues. Then it all went poof.

FlatEarthling · 03/03/2021 09:38

@SchrodingersImmigrant good point.
I'd say it was a bit more sluggish since I started the diet.
I put the lack of a daily bowel movement down to the fact there was less going in so less to come out.
I'm eating loads of salad and veg.
Current favourite treat is dark rye ryvita with light Philadelphia
Even though there are Snickers in the fridge.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/03/2021 10:11

I found exercise helps with bowels. The more you move, the more they move.
I love ryvita rye with quark and herbs or sauerkraut and bit of mustard.

FlatEarthling · 03/03/2021 10:18

@SchrodingersImmigrant
I have been looking on You Tube for something appealing and quick,
I'm time poor.
I have put my old exercise bike in the living room but I won't use it until weekends.
I can't face it after work ( too tired) and actually can't face it before work when I'm on early shifts ( start at 6)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/03/2021 10:24

We started with Joe Wick's 15 min fat burner on youtube. Loved it. Now my DH does exercise with Fitness Blender. I make my own routines now.
It's really good. And short, give it a try and see.

wombatsandaplant · 03/03/2021 13:57

My rowing machine came this morning, so my dad built it for me.

I’ve only done 5 minutes but it hurts, it doesn’t hurt my lungs but my hips. But I’m gonna slowly build up and do it multiple times a day.

Last time I used a rowing machine 4 months ago it hurt nowhere near as much. I’m a bit gutted, I thought I could more but nope, oh well, not gonna let myself get negative.

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 03/03/2021 19:32

@FlatEarthling so frustrating to see a gain when you’re trying so hard! Angry keep going though and hopefully once you get over this hump you’ll race down the other side!!
I’m no expert so don’t take this as knowledgable advice and obviously do your own research but things that may help 1. Increase water intake 2. Psyllium husk capsules to help bowels - I have done juicing fast in the past and this worked for me at the time 3. Have a break weekend- totally take the pressure off and eat whatever you want whenever you want it! The difficulty with no 3. Is getting right back on it after 2 days - I’ve only managed this once as my will power isn’t great!! 🙈 but a friend who has managed to shift a lot of weight swears by it!

It’s easy to say isn’t it but I know I’ll be gutted if haven’t lost tomorrow!! Daffodil

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 03/03/2021 19:40

@wombatsandaplant glad it’s arrived and don’t be put off!! I’m having to build up slowly on the bike but itll be worth it!! Daffodil

wombatsandaplant · 03/03/2021 21:25

@Donteatpurplebroccoli thanks. I found it doesn’t hurt so much if I put my legs either side of the rail, it’s quite low down so legs are at a similar height to the foot plates. It seems to work gives my legs a workout too.

I’m planning to do a 1km a day this week and next week do 1.5km and up by 500m each week.

Neonlightning · 04/03/2021 05:27

SW: 147KG CW: 114KG Height: 178cm Age: 34 Health: PCOS

It's been a little while, but checking in. I know I'm not aligned to the weight in day, but down another 3 kilos since 21st Feb.

As expected weight loss is slowing, but my measurements are also decreasing so I know I'm finally building some muscle back.

That being said, would love to stay on losing 2-3 kilos a fortnight.

Still maintaining low carb eating; although I did have sourdough and poached eggs on the weekend at it was fabulous.

@wombatsandaplant, suggest to give HIT sessions a go too; 40 seconds at 100% effort, 20 seconds recovery x 5, 60 second rest, then do it again as many times as you can. I'm finding HIT sessions a god send in helping rev up my metabolism and increasing fitness quickly.

Neonlightning · 04/03/2021 05:29

@FlatEarthling, have you looked at Kayla Itsines? Her workouts are fab (I used the 8 week beginner course when getting back into fitness as I need to build on my core strength). Done in 30 minutes and can be done at home.

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 05/03/2021 08:07

Hope everyone ok? It’s Friday! My first check in and as expected good loss this week as first week fasting! Just got to keep it up now!
Mon 1st - 97.4kg
Thurs 4th - 95.4kg

Good luck everyone! Flowers

FlatEarthling · 05/03/2021 08:20

@Neonlightning I looked at Kayla. I need to find the beginner level as it looked a bit hard. Not that I tried it.
I can't do mountain climbers for a start. If I could do those I wouldn't be fat!
But thank you, it's a useful resource

claracluck1978 · 05/03/2021 08:37

This weeks weigh in and I'm down 2lbs, making 11lbs overall since January.

I'm pleased with that, slowly dropping which I was expecting.

FlatEarthling · 05/03/2021 08:42

I'm the same again this week.
I'm going to have to drop my calories.
I was on roughly 1350 at the start. I probably just lost bloat/water weight.
My period is due but that never made a difference before but I'm menopausal now and on HRT so anything is possible.
I get crushingly tired in the day before I'm due, which is a new symptom from the last few months. I thought it was because I was getting fatter and less fit but I noticed a pattern.

I'm going to try to reduce to 1,000 to 12,000 from today.

Donteatpurplebroccoli · 05/03/2021 21:25

@FlatEarthling hormones really don’t help do they! Hmm I’ve been struggling for the last 6 months or so with worsening moods. hope the reduced calories work for you this week. I’m enjoying a glass of wine and trying to stand firm on my crisp cravings!

chalkyc2 · 06/03/2021 07:53

Hi - I've seen this thread before but thought maybe I was too late to join...maybe not though so here goes!

I started the fast 800 on the 8th Feb with a 43.5 bmi. So ashamed of myself and my weight has been a continual battle all my life. I lost a lot 8 years ago and got down to just within normal bmi, but clearly it all went back on (and more).

I'm 50 in 2 years and need to get myself sorted. I feel like I'm an embarrassment to my kids (10 and 11 yr old boys). I have a pretty busy high level job and looking around me at work I'm really the only fat person. I'm hoping to emerge from a year of zoom looking a bit better (huh should have started a year ago!). I also got my covid jab 2 weeks ago and this must have been due to my bmi/group 6. So I haven't told anyone I've had it as again it's a bit humiliating!

Anyway. In 4 weeks I've lost just short of. 8kg and bmi is 40.7. Target weight means losing another 45kg. God!! I'm going to keep going with the fast 800 for another 8 weeks then I need to move onto something less restrictive (despite the fact I won't be anywhere near my target).

So good to hear I'm not alone in my struggles. Oh I'm also a former Diet Coke addict but went cold turkey 4 weeks ago and staying strong😬!!
