Exercise Accountability - anyone want to be exercise buddies?

Over this year I have really lost condition and I'd like to start doing some daily exercise to make up for the fact that I'm at home all the time now. Anyone want to join me for some daily accountability?
My plan is to do at least 20 minutes of YouTube yoga each day and increase the amount I'm walking by doing long walks on my days off.

Hi Clara, I'm still considering it. So far most places would involve either cadging a lift (not legal) or more than one bus which I reckon would be painful on the way home if it was cold. Do you do it? I've managed three decent walks today but have been doing badly in general. I think for January I'm going to try a 30 day yoga challenge

I've never tried it @Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket but I can imagine that the locations would be a bit out of the way Sad I'm hoping to start C25K again soon (looking out for a New Year thread on it!) and might dig out my Shred DVD too Shock

SingToTheSky · 28/12/2020 22:48

Belated merry Christmas!
I really enjoyed finally being able to leave the house for a family walk. We did the same yesterday. On Boxing Day I went out alone and had a brisk walk which was nice. Need to do that as often as possible.

DS and I have been enjoying Ringfit Adventure on switch for a bit of activity!

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 29/12/2020 15:30

Ringfit looks good @SingToTheSky! We used to have Wii Fit which was fun too (and I think is now languishing in the loft somewhere?!) - wonder if I can find something a bit cheaper for the Switch which the DC would enjoy too...

No snow here but it's freeeeeezing! Brisk walks are good but not for too long or the DC get too chilly!

SingToTheSky · 29/12/2020 16:13

Ooh I’d definitely get the Wii fit out if you can! I really miss it. We got rid of the Wii when we moved here in 2018 and much as I love the switch I do regret getting rid!

Will get a bit of a walk in later as I am working.

SingToTheSky · 29/12/2020 19:16

Yikes, my fitness has clearly declined in the last couple of weeks thanks to being stuck indoors - I was really out of breath walking back up the hill! 😳

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 31/12/2020 10:28

Does your DH enjoy the walks too @SingToTheSky? DP has moaned and moaned and moaned about wanting to lose weight but similarly moans about actually going out I'm really trying to make good habits for myself and the DC and we're only talking about a gentle walk, but he would rather park his bum on the sofa for hours!

Did you find anywhere to go swimming @Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket? Tier 4 here so everything is shut... such a shame as the DC are enjoying their swimming lessons, but I have no way of taking them for a swim at any other time.

Hope you are well too @picklemewalnuts!

picklemewalnuts · 31/12/2020 11:13

Clara, thank you for calling me! I lost the thread. I'll have a read and a catch up!

SingToTheSky · 31/12/2020 11:27

He does but he’d rather be running. He really misses it! He also gets tired/achy really quickly now, it’s a total change for him so it’s been quite hard.

picklemewalnuts · 31/12/2020 14:34

Right, I've caught up now!

Re swimming, was it on here someone talked about how good it is for pain? Something about cold water and symmetrical movements resetting the nervous system. So impressed was I that when the world gets slightly less weird (tier 4 here, too), I'm going to consider going outdoor swimming. In the meantime, I'm going to research where I can go.

As for swimming the wrong speed for the lane, @SingToTheSky, you set the speed! Don't feel self conscious, everyone else is either worrying about themselves, you worry about yourself too!

I'm impressed at you all fitting things around children. When I had little ones at home I pretty much gave up, unless there was a 'slot' in the schedule that worked. There was a year I went to the gym three times a week because it was near school and I could drop and gym in one go.

I've been pottering along- generally hitting my 2500, and usually 3000. My mother both helped and hindered- she got me out everyday, as she can't stand to stay in, but she also stressed me out every day!

And for those of you worrying about husbands and their activity levels- don't. You can't. You can only give them space and opportunity and then leave them to it. I was amazed how much mental energy I spent thinking about how DH was, what he needed, whether he was ok etc. When I stopped thinking about him and prioritised myself we were both happier!

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 31/12/2020 21:27

Could your DH do any gentle walking/ swimming at the moment @SingToTheSky or does anything strenuous set him back? It must be very frustrating indeed for him

To be honest @picklemewalnuts it was easier for me to exercise when the DC were tiny than it is now! I could stick them in their jumperoos for a bit and do a 15 minute workout. Now they want attention aaaallll the time and squabble like fiends Hmm plus they get tired/ bored easily when we go out for some fresh air - walking with them is harder mentally than physically!

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 31/12/2020 21:29

PS @picklemewalnuts, I do think you're right about exercise opportunities for partners. DP knows we go out every day at least once but he just CBA to join us a lot of the time, then he will berate me about him putting on weight, even though he made his own enormous breakfast...

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 01/01/2021 22:40

Happy new year all! May we manage to survive 2021 and get some time to ourselves. I managed to start 30 days of yoga with Adrienne today. Woo!
Totally agree with not getting involved in ohs exercise it's bad enough worrying about ourselves and our kids.

Hi, I posted before but have name changed and then fell off the thread.

After a restart, today is my day 3 and I'm confident I'm not going to wobble for a while..

picklemewalnuts · 05/01/2021 07:49

Well done, Yes!

I did a walk yesterday, and have another planned for Friday. So that's looking good. I'm back on the Tai Chi.

I'm stiff as a board and a bit sore, I can't decide if it's because I didn't move enough (a couple of days slobbing on the sofa recovering from Christmas) or because I overdid it pandering to my mother at Christmas. Ho hum.

Just have to keep up the daily basics and see what happens.

SingToTheSky · 05/01/2021 10:51

I’ve not done well with exercise yet! Been quite stiff and achy but it’s always hard to tell if that’s because I’ve done too much or too little - it really varies Hmm

Back to Google classroom (DD1) and home ed (DS) today and I am feeling pretty unmotivated about all that as well tbh!

At least next week we will have nursery runs again - determined to get up and do the morning ones.

DH does walk when he can but even that causes pain now :( he can’t do swimming either as the pain on getting out (going from the support of the water to being unsupported) was so awful, he even had hydrotherapy for a bit but it was counterproductive.

picklemewalnuts · 05/01/2021 11:30

Exactly that, Sing! Not knowing if it's the activity or the inactivity that causes the problem.

I did some physio prescribed neck exercises that made me feel really sick and migrainey. I'm very careful about that now- my neck and shoulders are tight, but stretching them leaves me feeling sick.

BrimfulOfBaba · 05/01/2021 21:27

Hi, can I join in? Been struggling to get back to my routine since before christmas and would love some accountability :)

Like lots of you, I'd like to hit my 10,000 steps each day and where possible get 9/9 hours with 250 steps. Also aiming for 30 mins on the cross trainer every other day and doing Kayla Itsine's BBG programme (currently on week 14 but have been stuck on it for 3 weeks!).

picklemewalnuts · 06/01/2021 13:44

That sounds good Baba! How's it gone today?

My dog is helping! He's refusing to walk when it's dark, so his usual pre work walk with DH has stopped. That means I get a little meander in at some point. So I've had three walks this week, and another planned for Friday.

BrimfulOfBaba · 06/01/2021 17:54

Going well thanks @picklemewalnuts, had a day full of meetings so only at about 6k steps and missed an hour from the 9 fitbit tries to get you to do 250 steps in.

About to get on the crosstrainer and then do a BBG workout! Aw, is your dog afraid of the dark?

picklemewalnuts · 06/01/2021 18:34

I think he's just a tad lazy and fond of a warm bed!

picklemewalnuts · 06/01/2021 18:34

Can't think where he gets it from!

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 06/01/2021 21:16

I was going to say that I very much empathise with your dog, @picklemewalnuts Grin

Urrrgghhh, it's all gone a bit wrong here since New Year. The weather's miserable, the DC are still recovering from chicken pox and of course the schools... Shock Shock My plans for getting active, starting a diet etc have been completely foxed! Plus AF started a couple of days ago and has been utterly horrendous. I will be back shortly when I've found some motivation/ energy again...

picklemewalnuts · 06/01/2021 21:21

Fair enough, Clara. You've got enough on your plate right now!

picklemewalnuts · 08/01/2021 07:25

I overdid it yesterday. 8000 steps. I was very tired and achey after that. Have a walk planned today as well.

I've actually walked every day this week, and twice a week throughout December. So not doing too badly. Back on the Tai Chi wagon too.
