Exercise Accountability - anyone want to be exercise buddies?

Over this year I have really lost condition and I'd like to start doing some daily exercise to make up for the fact that I'm at home all the time now. Anyone want to join me for some daily accountability?
My plan is to do at least 20 minutes of YouTube yoga each day and increase the amount I'm walking by doing long walks on my days off.

That's a great idea @picklemewalnuts. I used to be so much more active than I am now! Tried to get the DC out for a reasonably long walk today and DS2 tantrummed again - so frustrating, particularly as all their other activities are cancelled due to COVID, and he would follow DP's example of being glued to the sofa all day if he could...

I don't think I've ever recovered properly from the flu I had three years ago @SingToTheSky! It took me ten weeks to feel even vaguely better, the DC were only toddlers and there was no respite. It was a really tough time and the start of my weight-related struggles too.

Today has been an ok day though, 10K steps and PE with Joe. Tomorrow will hopefully be more exercise and some yoga. Just trying to be consistent and build up, as you both suggest!

SingToTheSky · 18/01/2021 23:54

That sounds so familiar clara - my ME was originally kicked off by flu in 2012. DS was a toddler too, it made things so hard! Post viral illness is terrible, and I can’t help but hope more research is aimed at it now with long covid being such a big issue for so many. I’ve been lucky that whatever that virus was in March, it didn’t have as bad/long term an effect as it could have. I was terrified at first as it felt just like having ME in the beginning - couldn’t even pick up a pen for a while. Oddly though once I did gradually increase my activity I felt better than I had in years - walked further, did more cardio etc. The body and immune system are funny old things aren’t they Confused

Anyway. Must sleep. Nursery run again in the morning!

picklemewalnuts · 20/01/2021 09:49

Morning all! Did our little post dinner walk again last night. Gradually creeping up the activity levels!

SingToTheSky · 20/01/2021 10:02

Well done! I was thinking I might need to start taking DD2 out for a little walk in the afternoons as she isn’t dropping off until late. Might tire her out a bit. Not particularly exercise for me as it’s 3yo pace but better than staying home all afternoon I guess?

I tried my tiny dumbbells out again last night and wrote out the routine, with a tracker. Once I’ve done it 12 times I’ll increase it. I’m tempted to get a medicine ball too

picklemewalnuts · 20/01/2021 11:09

Perhaps while you are walking, you could add a few lunges? Maybe while she stops to look at things. Or do mini steps, like bouncing on the balls of your feet. I do that while I'm cooking, to try and get my steps up.

picklemewalnuts · 24/01/2021 14:12

I've been very active! Did a batch of wii fit, quite intense by my standards. I'm shattered, and just hope I don't pay tomorrow!

SingToTheSky · 24/01/2021 14:32

I miss Wii fit! What bits did you do? I’ll live vicariously through you as I’m being lazy today (unless you count the mental work of dragging a reluctant teen through English homework)

picklemewalnuts · 24/01/2021 14:51

This time I did the strength exercises. I haven't don't them in years, and was pleased to find I was no worse and on some better! I think the tai chi has helped so much.
I finished off with step.

I usually do the hula hooping, step, marching band, rhythm boxing and the Kung-Fu type one, can't remember what it's called.

SingToTheSky · 24/01/2021 15:14

Oh I loved the boxing one especially. I have the fitness boxing game on switch now which is fun but makes my arms ache like crazy so I don’t play much!

I have a proper aerobics step now which I try and use when I have the living room to myself, I made up routines to some songs I like but when I first got it the first thing I did was look up the Wii fit routine on YouTube and did that for old times sake 😂😳

picklemewalnuts · 24/01/2021 16:23

Aw!

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 29/01/2021 22:30

Hope everyone is doing ok and managing to do a bit of exercise... I am exhausted after yet more home schooling Sad

I'm doing PE with Joe or another online workout most days, plus an hour or so's walking (with small grumpy DC, unfortunately!) - although today we did an hour in the garden instead, general tidying up (me) and playing in the mud (the DC). I do want to work in a bit more yoga, plus do some running when I can, but it's hard to find the time/ enthusiasm when it's freezing outside.

@SingToTheSky sorry to hear that your ME was brought on by the flu!! I honestly never thought it would affect me that badly, but with hindsight it was probably the lack of rest; I had bad flu a couple of years before I had the DC but then I had the luxury of things like lie ins and sofa time Confused

Hope you're well @Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket @picklemewalnuts

SingToTheSky · 29/01/2021 22:36

It’s very different trying to recover now isn’t it :( I’ve been struggling to cope at all atm as DH is ill (more so than the usual chronic stuff he has - actually ordered a covid test today). Been in all day doing nothing but playing piano and Mario! I’ve done my weights routine a bit but now we are all self isolating it’ll be hard to do some other stuff as I prefer having the living room to myself

picklemewalnuts · 30/01/2021 09:02

I'm ok, thank you. I'm generally being productive and doing about 5k steps a day. Just trying to keep it up for a while so it becomes normal. Maybe then I can try and increase it a bit.
Long term my aim is not to slow my husband down on holiday. We tend to go to English heritage or interesting cities (York, Chester) and do everything that can be done in a day. Several days like that, and I'm on my knees. I'm not anywhere near there yet, though.

picklemewalnuts · 30/01/2021 13:05

Wii fit strength- very pleased with my performance today. Will look at increasing my reps on some of them next time.
Finished off my 30mins with step and hula hoop.

Walking the dog in a minute. Smashing it today, hope I don't flop tomorrow!

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 30/01/2021 22:08

I loved doing the city breaks pre-DC @picklemewalnuts - wandering around, taking in the sights, stopping for a drink/ meal in a leisurely way - no double buggy to push or small screeching children to accommodate... Brighton and Oxford were also lovely to visit Smile

My step count's been quite low as the weather's truly awful, I do drag the DC out for a walk every day but it still doesn't get me up to 10K, even with PE with Joe in the morning too. Sigh.

Hope your DH feels better very soon @SingToTheSky Flowers

Do you bop in the kitchen, Clara? I'd think the kids would enjoy a kitchen disco, a la Sophie Ellis bexter!

I was a few shy of 5k yesterday. And did all the steps in the dark- barely moved off the sofa, so had to walk after dinner while the kids did the kitchen.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 01/02/2021 11:04

It's certainly worth a try @picklemewalnuts! They've lost enthusiasm for PE with Joe apart from the running/ jumping bits, I still did it and it nearly killed me but there's just not much to do with them in terms of activity... all their classes are cancelled, we're not supposed to travel far and the weather is freezing!

I can only dream of being as slim and sparkly as SEB though, I will not be attempting any sequinned minidresses Grin

picklemewalnuts · 01/02/2021 15:53

Probably wise! I do enjoy seeing her step over her toddler, wearing said sequinned minidress and stilettos, without skipping a note, while simultaneously issuing her older D.C. with instructions! That multitasking is very much what many families are doing at the moment, albeit with less glamour!

I've done my walk and my Tai Chi. I'll bop in the kitchen while I cook,if I can manage it!

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 01/02/2021 22:23

She's ace isn't she @picklemewalnuts! Who knows how she manages to look so amazing after five kids Confused

I took the DC out on their scooters after PE with Joe, we did an hour or so outside, but my goodness it was chilly! 9K steps today, I need to up it a bit to make a difference. I was feeling reasonably good as I've lost 2.5lb this week, till DS2 gave me a hug and said happily "Mummy, your belly is lovely, like a big jelly" Confused

picklemewalnuts · 05/02/2021 07:53

You can feel good and have a soft belly! It's allowed! I keep under shooting my steps by just a little- it's like , I'm nearly there so I think great, I,lol be done by bed time, and then forget! I don't suppose it matters in the overall scheme of things, but it's irritating.

SingToTheSky · 05/02/2021 09:31

Between self isolating, nursery closing again and plain old laziness I have only left the house once in the last week! Not made up for it in other ways either. I think I need to go and drop some library books back today which doubles up as decluttering a bit, and the walk will do me good. When I did go out on Tuesday with DS for pokemon hunting I felt absolutely shattered and achy after which was quite a shock. Hmm

picklemewalnuts · 05/02/2021 09:43

That's a worry, sing! My tai chi teacher did a routine we hadn't done since before Christmas, which involves a stretch up, forward, and down toward the toes. I'd got quite good at it when we were doing it weekly, but I've stiffened up significantly since then. Actually that's reminded me, I should throw it in on the end of Tai Chi every day.

SingToTheSky · 05/02/2021 09:54

Hopefully we will get used to these things again quickly! I should really at least do my little weights routine daily, it’s so short. It’s always nice seeing things get easier.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 05/02/2021 21:42

@picklemewalnuts I think the belly may be more down to the 3 stone I still need to lose working on it though!

@SingToTheSky it can feel like such an effort to leave the house can't it? Especially when you have small DC to bundle up against the weather, I have to add on 10 minutes for that alone!!

I've been doing a daily workout but was very achey today - think it's also because I've developed an eye infection - more rest needed, but that's unlikely with two energetic DC around...
