Starbear · 24/08/2007 23:06

Got back from hols last Saturday and promised I would start weight lose on Monday. Got into work on Tuesday to find a large tin of biscuits on the desk. Not good. Thought I would try Mumsnet for moral support and found out everyone started without me.
I'm 44 years (Jane Fonda where are you now!) 12 stones 5'6 and need to join in with others to lose the flab. Have 3 year old and work part-time 3 days a week, in a Yukky job. Anyone want to join me?
What get advice on losing weight mainly using exrcise as I really love my food
With a little support I might be able to diet too.

I sound identical to you. I would love love love to lose two stone but am going to find it hard to eat less of what I enjoy. Am vaguely researching the GI diet as the general principles sound good but I am repelled by the idea of sweeteners, low fat cheese etc. Anything that's been buggered about with, really.

I plan to go for a big bike ride today but really have to start a proper exercise plan. Am about to join a sports club so that might help. The only time I have without kids is evenings and weekends though. I have dd, 3 and ds, 7.

Blandmum · 26/08/2007 09:22

I'm the same, but I have more to lose. I've done the GI plan in the past and it is excelent and very healthy (plus I lost about a stone, then put it back on¬!)

Starting today re the exercise

Kbear · 26/08/2007 09:56

Join Rosemary Conley. It is a sensible GI plan, not faddy. I certainly didn't eat tons of sweeteners and crap, I never ate so healthily. I lost a stone in 10 months, slow and sure. Kept it off too (until this summer when I have been following the Mr Kipling plan ).

So I'm back on it now, the weigh in class is a fiver but you get a 45 minute exercise class thrown in and THAT my friends is what motivates and inspires you. Exercise is addictive, you work out hard so you don't feel the need to go home and eat cake, you want to build on the success.

I'm going to Florida next year and I want to get back down to 10 stone, I'm creeping back up to 11.

So here we go. I'm in if you are.

Hi Kbear, MartianBishop and AlwaysWatchingCastawayat2A Thank Goodness the Bank Holiday Weekend is over. I had to work at Notting Hill Carnival 13 Hours Sunday 15 hours on Monday. So I'm v.v.tired today No chance to be healthy. Hope you all had a fab weekend. I thought we could use this week as preparation and planning.
I don't know very much about the GI diet is it easy get together?
AlwaysWatchingCastawayAt2am I'm the same I don't mind eating a snickers bar with all it's additives but as soon as a diet says Low fat and sweeteners I go off the idea. I also cook from scratch, This is probably why I don't have time to exercise. Maybe I should stop being a food snob and just get my weight down first. MartianBishop & Kbear which book do recommend for GI Diet?
I thought we could all note down the following for Monday
Weight now (Maybe not for Publication!?)
measurements Waist & Hips
Menu For the week (roughly)
Exercise plan
This might give the rest of us some new ideas. What do you think?

breeze · 29/08/2007 12:51

Can I join as well.

I am 12.5 stone and I 5 ft 4 in, desperately want to lose 2 stone as well.

Work part time 9 hours a week, and have lots of time to snack

Starbear · 29/08/2007 22:53

Sure just join in. I might not post a message every day as life gets too busy and I can't use the Internet at work. But I'm never too busy to have tea and biscuits or a slice of Birthday cake or two like today. From Monday I plan to be stronger and just say no.
Not to sure what I plan to eat next week, anybody have any ideas? I do plan to go for a run on Monday, Gym Wednesday and Sunday. How about everyone else what do you plan to do? This tummy has got to go away because I refuse to buy bigger jeans even from M&S, you know, with the elastic on the side & a little more generous room around the thighs. I hate them (But I had to buy a pair for my hols) I might try and write out an activity & food diary sheet. What do you all think?

handlemecarefully · 29/08/2007 22:54

Exercise is great for loosing weight - but only in conjunction with a diet. It won't be enough on it's own for most people

handlemecarefully · 29/08/2007 22:56

What I've said is research based (forgive me if I don't google to find the research that I have previously read on this)

and from personal experience - running 3 times per week a distance of 3-5 miles each time did nothing for my weight loss (until I cut down on the crap I eat and the beer I put away)

SpeccieSeccie · 29/08/2007 22:58

Oooh, can I start too? Monday has been my start date in my head for a while. But I am really rubbish at diets. I sort of thought I'd go for building up my fitness levels which will make me feel nice and maybe discourage me from eating so much cheese sauce-type stuff.

Starbear · 29/08/2007 23:03

Sadly I have to agree. Once upon-a-time I didn't have to diet, just exercise with Jane, go running with the club or run any old time and do circuit training just to meet men. Oh dear a life time ago. Found the man and angel kid but the rest has gone to pot. I really, really want to change it and make into a temporary blip.

kidsrus · 29/08/2007 23:04

hiya all can i join in too please!
I'm going to try ww again with more exercise.
i'm about the same weight and height as breeze with 19mth and 6yo in tow.
It would be good to know if im doing good or bad and get the support i need.
Making the most of eating all ican at the moment till sun d-day

fedda · 29/08/2007 23:04

I'd like to join you, please. I'm trying hard to cut out buiscuits, ice cream, chocolate, cakes, pies, white bread, sugar. It's very hard and some foods have sugar already in them. Anyway, I don't add sugar so i stopped having coffee which I can only have with 2 sugars if it's weak and 5 sugars when it's strong (it's soo bitter). Even with tea i need some sugar so at the moment I don't have tea. Also for both tea and coffee I have to have something with my drink so I have water or juice instead. No crisps, no sweets. instead - fruit, veg, nice meals but smaller portion sizes. breakfast - porriage or some berries or some fruit. lunch - soup or salad, normal dinner. Any suggestions will be greatly received. I'm lazy with excersise but I walk a lot.

Starbear · 29/08/2007 23:06

I'm going to stop now as I think spending to much time on the net can't be good for me as I might get addicted to the chat as I did with CB radio. So people, good night, sleep tight and will chat another day

OP posts:
kidsrus · 29/08/2007 23:09

oh fedda i know what you mean ive just had coffee with 1 and 6 biscuits and could eat more.
Must go back to the herbal tea as i don't want biscuits or sugar with those

VengefulSquirrel · 29/08/2007 23:11

Hello

can I join??? I was chunky, now have verged onto just plain fat...very low self esteem. Had dd 5 months ago and ready to see my toes again.

5'8'' and 13 stone. I know, a bloater.

Skribble · 29/08/2007 23:31

If dieting is a struggle try tackling it from the healthy eating point of view, aim more for what you should be eating rather than what you should be cutting out.

Have a look at portion size, don't deny yourself the food just have a reasonable size poetion rather than a plate piled high or a whole family bag of maltesers.

It does help to plan menus, but plan proper meals for the whole family not just a diet meal for you, much more likely to keep at it and good for everyone too. I find my last minute nothing in the cupboard meals atre my rubbish unhealthy ones, if you plan you can ensure you have enough veggies and fruit in for all your meals.

If you feel the urge to snack, drink a glass of water and see if that will do you for a while, helps to drink loads of water anyway and sometimes when its not real hunger the water can satisfy you for another 10mins at least .

Walk, walk, walk great destresser too, after lunch stroll at work (can help to escape for a bit if you have time), if the LO is still in a buggy get out and about and walk as often as you can, easier to fit in than the gym and you can take the LO too.

So people, we have read enough diets in magazines over tea, coffee, biscuits and that 'I'll start dieting tommorow' cake to know what we should be doing. Now we've somehow going to get it done.
Skribble thanks for the tips I will have to think of family meals and go on from there.

Personally, I have to walk as part of my job and my supervisor would like me to cycle but I'm really a crap cyclist I'll get myself killed. I also brought a trolley, it's not cool or stylish but instead of getting in the car to do the shopping, I walk into town (Ds has to walk too) So I imagine I need to put some serious effort into this.
Keep the advice coming as it will keep us all on track.

Let's enjoy the weekend then and see you all on Monday with measurements etc (that should be fun!)

Starbear · 30/08/2007 23:37

Before we go for the weekend. Can anybody recommend a recipe diet book to follow. It must be roughly no convenience food, no branded low fat.low blurb full of strange additives e.g weight watchers
Of course family friendly. Now thinking about it I might go through the loft and find some odd book that I never followed maybe that's where I've gone wrong I didn't fancy the recipes and gave up to quickly. I like old fashioned food shepherd pie, casseroles etc. Not into Thai or chilli.

massivebigpantsface · 02/09/2007 13:31

me too!

i did attempt to do this a few weeks back and failed miserably after a few days, resorting to my chocolate eating once again.

i need to lose about a stone for now and get fit! dd is 7 months old now and the weight has been steadily increasing for the last month or so - i weigh more now than i did 4 weeks after she was born!
