We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and all at different stages, but we’re all seeing some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food. It’s a long old road, but it helps to chat along the way

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time, with whatever weight loss method you think works best for you. Some of us have lost more than others, but we're all in this together, so if you're losing, gaining or staying the same, it's nice to have some inspiration to keep going.

We’re always welcoming to newcomers, but as with the previous thread(s), I’ll add one caveat - we’re all here because we are trying to lose a LOT of weight. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this might not be the thread for you. Good luck with your goals, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals to you.

I lost 0.7kg or nearly 2lb this week which is a good boost.

vickibee · 16/11/2019 11:09

Well done on the loss moonlight 👍
What did fit Tim say that was so bad, must have missed that

I had a bad day yesterday ended up eating loads of those flapjack bite thingys, marginally better than chocolate. Self sabotage

moonlight1705 · 16/11/2019 19:37

Oh he was trying to sell us the perfect weight loss plan obviously Hmm

Never mind about the flapjack, tomorrow is another day. I've been on the cake today with friends which was delicious but hefty calorie wise.

camrose · 17/11/2019 12:41

I last posted about 6 weeks ago. I have lost a further 2.6kg since then and am now 129.4kg. Still far too much but it feels good to be under 130kg.

Had the results of some blood tests last week which indicates I have something called hyperparathyroidism. Will be referred to a consultant. At least this helps to explain a number of the vague symptoms I have had recently.

vickibee · 19/11/2019 12:14

2.6 Kg is fab Camrose
Doesn't a thyroid problem make you gain weight? it can be treated with medication I beleive so this may help you
My blood test shows low iron levels which expalins why I am always cold. Being called into see my GP about if

moonlight1705 · 19/11/2019 12:31

I'm on levothyroxine which is really helping me stay stable. Its still hard losing weight but I am no longer putting it on all the time. It did take about a year to get the dosage right.

The trouble with thyroid problems is that the doctor's 'normal' level is under 3 FSH but I didn't feel better until I was under 1 FSH, however it took until I was with a consultant for pregnancy to get them to change my medication to the right level. You have to really research and put forward your case for upping medication to the correct point.

camrose · 19/11/2019 19:08

Thank you @vickibee .

My problem is with my parathyroid (rather than my thyroid) so not sure it is quite such an achievement! But at least my weight is going in the right direction.

moonlight1705 · 19/11/2019 22:12

Ahh ignore all of the above then Grin glad the weight loss is going well.

zoflirter · 19/11/2019 22:17

Hi can I join.... I've put on 6 stone in the past 2.5 years after some awful events (DV, homelessness, losing my job, divorce) I just ate and ate and drank and drank and now I'm 18.5 stone... I'm 5"10 if that matters. It puts me in the morbidly obese category.

I don't do weigh ins because I don't have scales! But I'm going to judge by what clothes I can fit back in to. Mine range from a size 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 which I bought for the first time a week or so ago. It was a real wake up for me.

zoflirter · 19/11/2019 22:18

Oh and some time on Olanzapine really screwed up my eating too.... I could t stop eating on it and my metabolism was shot

Alimo57 · 20/11/2019 17:51

Hi
Newbie here...
I’m a serial dieter, in the last 5 years I’ve lost about 16 stone... unfortunately it’s the same stone that I’ve lost and regained 16 times!
Every time I regain weight after losing it, I regain a bit extra.
I need to lose at least 10 stone now and at 57 it’s become more of a health thing than vanity. My knees are shot, I get breathless walking upstairs, my back aches constantly and I’m still having periods (another curse of being obese). On the plus side I don’t have high BP or diabetes and I’m not on any medication.

I’ve done most diets - VLCDs, keto, SW, WW... to name but a few. The truth is I just like food, and by food I mean all the ‘wrong’ sort - bread, chocolate, cakes, etc.
I constantly make excuses for my lack of will-power.
I’ve read a lot of the posts in this thread and some of your journeys are amazing, and after a lifetime of being fat I’m now realising how much I’ve missed out on.
It’s a rubbish time of year to be trying to lose weight but I’m getting really fed up of feeling so crappy.....

zoflirter · 20/11/2019 22:40

Amino!!! This is me!! I lose and gain all the time! It's exhausting

vickibee · 21/11/2019 08:57

i am trying hard to do mindful eating, thinking about the food i am eating and whether it is nourishing etc. I savour the food in my mouth because once swallowed the yummyness is gone. This is totally new to me as I just used to eat whatever I wanted and hence getting up to nearly 19 stone. This is how I need to think or I will go back to old ways.
I am just under 15 now and feel so much better - my aim is another 2 but I am finding it more and more difficult. My Left knee is athritic and is still painful but less so than six months ago.I also have more energy and can skip up the stairs instead of stopping to catch my breath.

moonlight1705 · 21/11/2019 09:19

I've started reading 'The Becks Diet' and its about about using CBT techniques to not think about food etc. Its really helping using some of those techniques and I am hoping it will lead to an improved way of eating for me i.e. not snacking, controlling binges and remembering that hunger is not always a bad thing.

Agree with vickibee that mindful eating is really important and I am trying to use that idea.

vickibee · 21/11/2019 09:29

i read an earlier thread about how slim people think differently.
What was said rung so true with me and it has taken a long time to get the right mind set.
I constantly think about food and I am hungry all the time. I have had porridge for breakfast with berries and I feel like something else already Hmm
I have hit a plateau so what was working before isn't noe, do I need to reduce food even more?
Moonlight what are your ways of controlling snacking etc

moonlight1705 · 21/11/2019 09:45

Well one of the techniques is saying to myself 'There is NO choice' to stop the dithering about and the mental torment of thinking about snacks. I am doing a fasting day today and finding it easier and easier to say, I'm just not having a snack so no point in even thinking about it. Hard to do though!

Do you follow a low-calorie diet or low-carb etc? It might be worth thinking about switching it but not go too far down in calories. Your body can go into shutdown mode if you go too far (which has been my problem in the past).
I'm liking the 5:2 at the moment as I get naturally less calories but through short periods of fasting and then good eating the rest of the time.

vickibee · 21/11/2019 10:18

I am going on the advice of an NHS dietician who suggested 14 to 1500 cals per day. I haven't been exercising as much because of dark nights and miserable weather. Maybe that is it.

poorlymatchedsocks · 21/11/2019 10:37

Love this thread. I've been stuck at 19 stone since I had my toddlers, lost 2 stone about 6 months ago but put it all back on now 2 pounds down starting again. Nice to see a similar community

vickibee · 21/11/2019 11:52

welcome to the newbies

moonlight1705 · 26/11/2019 16:04

STS this week but it's ok as I've had quite a few treats.

vickibee · 27/11/2019 06:07

We all have sts weeks as my dietician told me yesterday, she said not to be too hard on yourself and remind yourself that you are doing well.
We talked about xmas and all the festive food. For example they always put chocolates out in the reception and before I would mindlessly grab as I walked past. I am going to try really hard not to do this and save myself a few hundred calories.
Also it is hard to get exercise when the weather is so bad. We live in a village in the Pennines and it is miserable And dark here 🌧☂️ And I am at least 30 mins drive form a pool or gym. I don’t know about you but you want to stay toasty in bed

Keep going moonlight we are losing it faster than we put it on

ringletsandtwiglets · 27/11/2019 18:21

Hello lovely people. I'm a newbie looking to lose a lot of weight.

I've been overweight since the age of around 13 and it's only now, 23 years later, that I'm waking up to how stupid I've been. Big portions, carb overload, and pretty much constant eating in between meals, often secretly, have all resulted in me weighing 122kg. I was heavier, but lost weight during a hospital stay when I was dependent on the hospital food and wasn't snacking all day.

Today, I had 2 scrambled eggs for breakfast, an M&S tomato salad for lunch followed by 30g of raisins, an apple as mid-afternoon snack and will be having steak for dinner. Mr Twiglets will have his with chips and peppercorn sauce. I'm planning to give him half of 'my' steak and serve it with a big salad of Chinese leaf, cucumber, red pepper and cherry tomatoes.

For the first time ever, I feel determined.

vickibee · 28/11/2019 04:55

Welcome twiglet. Sounds like you have made a great start
Constant snacking was my problem too. I could easy polish off a pack of pringles after dinner without batting an eyelid.

ringletsandtwiglets · 28/11/2019 08:42

@vickibee, that sounds just like me! I need to learn those 'I've had enough' signals again. I'm starting to recognise when I'm hungry, and reminding myself that I can wait til mealtimes.

Any suggestions for a good mid-afternoon snack?
