We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and all at different stages, but we’re all seeing some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food. It’s a long old road, but it helps to chat along the way

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time, with whatever weight loss method you think works best for you. Some of us have lost more than others, but we're all in this together, so if you're losing, gaining or staying the same, it's nice to have some inspiration to keep going.

We’re always welcoming to newcomers, but as with the previous thread(s), I’ll add one caveat - we’re all here because we are trying to lose a LOT of weight. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this might not be the thread for you. Good luck with your goals, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals to you.

@Rebecca3127, you’ve already lost 5 stone? Bloody brilliant!! What are you struggling with at the moment? Everyone here is SO lovely and supportive.

@Zebracat, I still firmly think that we should have a little bit of what we fancy. I know I find it hard to get out of the ‘I’ve been so good, I deserve a treat’ mindset so I’ve started planning the better days to have additional snacks. Days I have wholewheat pasta for dinner = apple for my snack. Days I have salad and chicken for dinner= 3 squares of my favourite peanut butter chocolate for my snack.

I also get such a boost from tracking on my Fitbit watch and scales.

I’m ok @ringletsandtwiglets. Don’t feel the scales are rewarding me properly, but I have had chocolate every day this week. Maybe I need to be stricter!. I’ve got my Size 16 jeans on, but there’s a lot of spillage at the waistband. How are you?

How are you doing, @Zebracat? So true about forgiving ourselves. Also not letting one high-fat/sugar meal or treat ruin a week of good work by thinking 'fuck it, may as well eat all the biscuits now'.

Well done @CopperBoomCopperBoom. That is so much weight lost. What are your best tips?but 48 pounds before someone mentioned it is incredible.
Hello and welcome to @Primotomb. I lost about 3 stone 3 years ago, and piled it on again. Very annoying. We need to forgive ourselves and move forwards. I’m always good for the 1st stone, but then the snacks creep in and the scales stop giving me any encouragement.
I am trying to be kind to myself and understand that it took years to get this fat, I can re-educate myself slowly, trying to make more good choices. I’m doing 16:8. I am also doing MFP, and calorie counting.. How are you tackling this.

I'm 50 later this year and was determined to have made a good start on the weight loss journey before then. I've got around 7 stone to lose. I feel like I've been dieting most of my life without getting anywhere. I lost 4 stone around 3 years ago and felt in a really good place but plateued, gave up and have piled it all bank on and then some. Started the new year with good intentions but am not making any progress. Spells of being "good" interspersed with sheer gluttony. What plans have you found work well in terms of sustaining for the duration of a big weight loss?

Another 2lb loss this week and yesterday was the first time someone noticed and was very complimentary. Haven't heard a compliment in a very long time.

Over half way to my goal now.

Lost so far (since August 2019): 48.6lb
Until target weight: 44.2lb

What a helpful list, Ringlets. Thanks. I have a routine breakfast of porridge, and it does help. Hadn’t thought of doing that for lunch.im going to try with the carb replacement though,. . I’m doing 16:8 and my last meal is at 6, if I go too skinny on that one I can’t sleep and end up with midnight feasts!

Thank you, @Zebracat Star

I think the most helpful thing has realising that I've been a stupid arse and haven't looked after myself very well until now. This is the first time I've made any real concerted effort to lose weight, and I've always just believed I couldn't do it. But I bloody well can, and will!

Other helpful things:
*I've not banned any food, so I don't hate myself if I eat chocolate.

*MFP and weighing food really helps me get a handle on portion size.

*I've replaced some 'big' carbs with veg instead- salad with steak and no chips, tenderstem broccoli and green beans with chilli chicken instead of rice etc, but I sneak one of Mr Twiglets' chips if I fancy it.

*I have a very routine breakfast and lunch (2 scrambled eggs; chicken or cheese salad) which is about 400 calories altogether. This gives me a bit more freedom for the evening meal.

*Popchip mini bags (73 cals) and M&S soft eating raisins are my post-work snacks.

Your external stress sounds horrible, Zebra. I hope the event isn't as bad as you are picturing. If it is, come and tell us and we'll send hate-vibes to those responsible :)

Wow ringlets. You are doing so well, that is a lot of weight lost. What do you think has helped most?. I have to get vitamins checked as I have a problem with my thyroid. Nails and hair are really dry. I am frustrated as exercise helps so much physically and mentally. I have a dysfunctional extended family and a very stressful event is coming up. Swimming keeps me calm, but the gout and the other health stuff has derailed my routine. Once things get knocked out of kilter, it can be so hard to get back on track.i can’t afford to stop trying though. So sick of being fat.

@Zebracat, I didn't see the docs for most of my bouts, just hobbled through it and tried to keep going. Stupid.

I had a spell in hospital in the summer, and suffered an attack while I was there. They gave me some amazing medication called colchicine, which cleared it up in a couple of days. It hasn't come back since.

Have you had your magnesium levels checked? Mine was low, so they gave me a supplement to mix in water. I've also started taking Vitamin D, which has made such a difference to my energy levels, my nails are stronger, and I lose so much less hair now too.

I'm not sure if either of those two things have helped the gout, but I haven't had another attack since July.

I'm finally (just) in the 17 stone bracket. From my heaviest, around 18 months ago, I've lost four and a half stone. Long way to go, still, but I'm enjoying seeing my efforts actually work.

Thank you. It was my second attack, first was toe, this was in my knee. Absolutely awful and comes out of nowhere. Dr is telling me that I need to lose weight and exercise, like I didn’t know that. How is it going for you, @ringletsandtwiglets?

ringletsandtwiglets · 23/02/2020 08:02

Oh @Zebracat, I’m so sorry! I have had a few bouts of gout in my big toe joints. The pain is just mind-blowing and each time it came on, it would actually wake me up. The pressure of just a bed sheet on my foot was too much and it felt like I was being sliced by a thousand tiny knives. Is the medication working now? You’ll get back on track when you’re well enough xxx

Zebracat · 22/02/2020 23:08

I have had a crap week. I got gout which is incredibly painful and intrinsically comedic. Have to take food with naproxen, so that cocked up my 16:8. Couldn’t move at all, so that’s bad, ended up comfort eating on the sofa. Gained1.5 kilos. Sad.

Amazed that I'm halfway there...
December and jan were bad with hardly any loss so hopefully I can make it close before the next December or not give in to temptation so much.

Thank you fir the good wishes. My operation will be in 2 weeks time so not long to wait now.

ringletsandtwiglets · 17/02/2020 12:17

Lots of love for @camrose. Hope the operation goes well and your recovery is swift. How much longer do you need to wait?

@vickibee and @TheLovleyChebbyMcGee, I'm with you both about food-based socialising. I'm not a big drinker, hate clubs and dancing, so my main going out occasions are meals. I am getting better at sticking to a main course only, or having a healthier choice so I can also have a pudding, but I wish there was an easier way of tracking calories. I end up having to guess and I'm sure I'm either way under or way over.

I'm doing okay at the moment. I'm back at work almost full time after being off since Summer. It means fitting in exercise has become more challenging, so I'm doing around 30 minutes a day, plus 10k steps, instead of an hour a day.

I had another big dip in weight earlier this week, then it went back up again, but my weekly average shows a consistent 2lb loss again. I'd hoped I'd be in the 17 stone bracket by this week, but might have to wait until next week to get there :)

Hello everyone! It's not been a great week for me tbh, but not a really terrible one either I guess. DS has been ill, clingy, and not eating. I'm a sucker at picking at food he's left, especially toast!

I weigh in on a Thursday and last week I'd lost 0.5kg, so I guess that's not all bad, but will see if I can make better choices this week.

@camrose 2kg over christmad is totally fine. We went a bit crazy over Christmas, but I hadn't weighed myself before so no idea what I put on, probably 6kg? Anyway, hope you are feeling ok And here's hoping the time goes swiftly before your op!

And yes, @vickibee, all my socialising seems to revolve around food, it's so difficult!

Report
Zebracat · 15/02/2020 21:38

Oh camrose, your health is the thing. Hope that it all comes together for you after the op. Been out to a party today. Went 400 calories over my allowance. 2 puddings!

Report
camrose · 15/02/2020 12:26

I've been a bit quiet lately. It's been a bit up and down.
Despite trying to be careful I put on 2kg over Christmas. I started to get my weight down again when I had a medical procedure in January which meant I had to rest for a week so my weight went (slightly) up again.
I have hyperpathyroidism and will have an operation next month to remove the rogue parathyroid. To be honest I don't feel well and exercise makes me feel much worse. So I'm just biding my time until I feel better after the operation. 🤞( without putting on anymore weight!).
Not very positive but I'm keen to step up the exercise after my op.

More cake today - it is Mums 86th bday and we are going out for afternoon tea. Why does all socialising seen to revolve around eating and drinking

Report
Zebracat · 13/02/2020 11:51

I will tr6yto keep going, can’t bear to go back up and struggle with getting socks on again. Vickibee, shame you didn’t enjoy the cake, but surely It won’t completely scupper you? Just do some vigorous housework! I say this because the dog rolled in muck and I just energetically bathed him and now I have a filthy bathroom to clean. And on that basis just enjoyed a large slice of loveliness.

agree Ringlets as you get smaller it becomes a lot harder. I have only lost 8 pounds since November and it is a bit demotivating but I keep going with slow progress.
I am doing green tea in the hope of a miracle lol. Apparently it boosts your metabolism a bit? I guess not having milk in a drink also helps.
It was my sons 13th bday at the weekend and I was forced into eating a huge chunk of his cake that I didn't really want. so I guess that's scuppered this week.

Zebra, that’s brilliant! From reading threads here and stuff on YouTube, it seems that the point where you hover is where most people give up. If you know you’re in a calorie deficit, as long as you keep it up, the scales should move again.

20 kilos to go, at least.
