Hello, welcome to the sixth instalment (wow!) of the ‘Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus …’ thread smile

We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and all at different stages, but we’re all seeing some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food. It’s a long old road, but it helps to chat along the way

Collectively, we’ve lost an incredible…......... 🌟 1205.75lbs 🌟 since the start of the first thread in Dec 16, which is amazing!

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time, with whatever weight loss method you think works best for you. Some of us have lost more than others, but we're all in this together, so if you're losing, gaining or staying the same, it's nice to have some inspiration to keep going.

We’re always welcoming to newcomers, but as with the previous thread(s), I’ll add one caveat - we’re all here because we are trying to lose a LOT of weight. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this might not be the thread for you. Good luck with your goals, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals to you.

I think "KOKO' is relevant here to Quandary and regarding night weaning, Mathsy! Keep on keeping on. Things will catch up in the end.

Hello everyone Smile I was hoping to join you all as I am struggling big time with my weight. I currently need to lose over 350lb not a typo and I am panicking. I have been overweight all my adult life but it has really ramped up this last few years until I am almost completely disabled by my fat.
I have read all of the posts since the beginning of part 1 which has taken a while but I feel so inspired by you lovely lot. I will be counting calories using my nutracheck account as I find it easier to use than mfp. I really really hope I can lose some weight as I don't want to die yet as I am only 49, have 4 wonderful kids and a lovely supportive husband. I have a lot to live for and I am barely living half a life at the moment.
I have severe agraphobia so I don't leave my house but it is a moot point really as I can hardly walk. I spend a lot of my time online or knitting toys for charities.
I would like to start by losing the first 100lb over the next year so if you wouldn't mind me posting here I will just take it a lb at a time.

starting weight 495lb
loss so far - 0lb

ChestyNut · 06/11/2018 07:07

Welcome sneeze it’s s tough journey but we’re here to support you and each other Flowers

You can do this!

MagicKeysToAsda · 06/11/2018 08:08

Welcome Sneeze! 1lb at a time, you can totally get yourself feeling better. It was an act of bravery to declare enough (and to post on here Grin) so you have already taken the first steps. Would you like to think about one way in which you'll be kind to your body and give it what it actually needs today? That might be a nice hand cream, or a good stretch, or a five minute breathing exercise (you tube is your friend here)...

I'll be after you for knitting tips as I'm a beginner trying to learn, to keep my hands busy not stuffing my face in the evenings!

Getfitmumma · 06/11/2018 08:19

Sneeze..... I say this genuinely and in a nice way, but at 35 stone are you not eligible for surgery on the NHS? I think if I had been around that weight at starting I would have considered it seriously as an option?

sneezeandclench · 06/11/2018 12:32

Hi there, yes I am eligible for surgery but I did a lot of research into it a while ago and came to the decision that it wasn't for me. I live in hope that I can lose the weight myself and have a normal life again whatever that is. I understand that this is a big challenge and that is why I am breaking it down to just a pound at a time, a day at a time and even just a meal at a time.

Today has been positive so far. I have had weetabix for breakfast, a jacket potato with cottage cheese and salad for lunch and I will be having a home made beef chow mein for dinner. I still have over 800 calories left so I may have some cheese on toast for supper if I want something.

Magic, thank you for the suggestions. I am really bad at self care so I will have a good think about nice things I can do for myself. I am a bit of a notebook addict so will write down some ideas. I have got through the last 40 years of knitting just knowing how to knit and purl. If you like the idea of making toys, the Jean Greenhowe patterns are amazing as all the different steps are explained really well.

Thank you for the welcome, I look forward to becoming part of the community here.

honeysucklejasmine · 06/11/2018 16:56

Welcome sneeze! I'm a knit and crochet girl too. You may want to take a look at "fatgirlfedup" on Instagram if you're on there - she's based in USA, and has lost 312lbs through diet and exercise. She's very honest about the process, and about how she now looks. She's actually just recovering from skin removal surgery but is so clear that compared to the life she had before, she's a million times better off.

Magic I definitely find doing craft in the evening (or chores) really helps avoid snacking.

Hello Sneeze, the hardest bit is deciding to do it so you have done the hardest bit already! The agoraphobia should go as you lose weight and gain a bit more confidence. It is amazing how little you have to lose in order to gain a lot more self worth.
For what it's worth, I think think diet and exercise is almost always the best way to do it, more sustainable and I think you have a better chance of keeping it off.

peachgreen · 07/11/2018 15:04

Hello, I'm a newbie and I'm posting here right this second because I have finally decided that enough is enough and I'm going to lose some damn weight. I've spent 34 years waiting to be thin before starting my life properly and now I see that over a third of my life has been wasted. I've been through all the phases and I'm just done with it. I know I should accept my body the way it is but I can't, so I'm going to knuckle down and get on with it. Being slim WILL make me happier - the happiest periods of my life coincide with the times I was either losing weight or was at my slimmest, so I'm on it.

Will post numbers soon - I have a baby sleeping on me right now so can't go and weigh myself! But wanted to placemark while I was feeling motivated. I'm a size 24 - have crept up from a size 18-20 since having my daughter almost a year ago - and I would like to be a comfortable 14, or even a 12. I reckon I have at least 150lbs to lose. I have PCOS but have had success with calorie counting in the past so that's what I'll be doing again, as well as intermittent fasting. I've also given up diet soda and swapped all cold drinks for water - have managed that for a few months now and I've definitely seen a positive change in my mood if nothing else.

Wish me luck!

honeysucklejasmine · 07/11/2018 15:34

Welcome and good luck Peach. Sounds very achievable to me

I am crazy hungry today. DS has been feeding practically non stop all afternoon so I wonder if it's in response to that. I could go for a proper binge if I'm not careful. Eep.

NSV for me yesterday - I don't know if this is linked with obesity or not but I don't have any form of gestational diabetes. I had the 28 week growth scan and actually got to see their little face - how utterly weird but wonderful if that.

My £10 per week for snacks is going well, I ended up buying a ginger bread man and a cuppa at the hospital yesterday as I had been there for 5 hours waiting for various appointments but that is all I've spent this week. Feeling quite proud of myself to be honest Grin

honeysucklejasmine · 08/11/2018 13:43

Moonlight I didn't get GD either time, much to the annoyance on the consultant. I attended joint clinic (diabetes and endocrinology) because I have an endocrine issue. She was so unpleasant to me - I had to do 2 Glucose Tolerance Tests each time (which is hard to fit in around work/a toddler) which I passed easily.

The only people I know who did have GD were skinny minis before pregnancy. None of the had the gtt as a matter of routine, and were diagnosed due to fundal height issues.

Well done on your snack budget!

I went 500 cals over yesterday. 🙈 Today I'm hoping to come in about 300 under and hope it evens out by Saturday. I had all the hunger yesterday.

Must do some craft in the evenings, keep me busy. Brownies tonight, and I need to finish a blanket, make a soft toy and embroider some stockings - I think! Can't remember if I did it already last year or not.

Hi
I haven't read the whole thread but hoping I can join and get to know people as I go along

I've been dieting my whole life and still can't seem to stick to any diet.

Need to lose weight otherwise I'm sure I won't be able to get pregnant (been trying for over 7 months already)

Need a kick up the bum!
Please help

honeysucklejasmine · 09/11/2018 07:34

Hi happy, welcome. Tell us a bit about yourself - what diets have you tried? What do you think is your main issue? (E.g. poor choices, or binge eating, etc) Then someone who has similar experience can suggest something. 😊

happyharmonica · 09/11/2018 08:21

Hi @honeysucklejasmine
I've tried slimming world and weight watchers mainly. But have also tried calorie counting and cutting portions.

I'm a big snacker. I like to grab food and eat it quickly even though I'm not busy and could cook.

I never feel full or satisfied with food

moonlight1705 · 09/11/2018 08:45

Hi happy you sound just like me in terms of never being satisfied with food and always wanting the next snack.

I don't know if I'm the right person to be giving advice as I've only lost 15lb so far but things that help me are:

  1. My Fitness Pal being filled in honestly so you can see where the calories are going - is that biscuit really worth 120 calories etc.
  2. Upping any exercise - it may not make you lose weight as such but toning and frankly being too busy to eat in that time helps.
  3. Treat yourself to something non-food related i.e. nice hair cut, a bling non chocolate advent calendar every so often and recognise that treats do not have to be about food.
  4. Find a hobby that takes up time - for me, I've joined a couple of committees and help out with fundraising, marketing, am dram and try to get the stuff done when you are most likely to snack.
  5. Find where your danger points lie - mine at the moment is bored at work and trying to figure out a way not to pop to the shop and get a packet of something.

Not sure I can help on the food satisfaction thing, the only time I've not had that was when I became pregnant but sadly it didn't last. I suppose acknowledging that being hungry will not kill you is a good starting point (I'm still trying to get there myself).

moonlight1705 · 09/11/2018 08:46

I meant to write sadly the feeling of not being hungry didn't last

honeysucklejasmine · 09/11/2018 08:51

Ok. This is just my opinion of course but this would be my plan of action.

SW/WW both focus on eating lots of free food. That's great in that the free food is healthy, but it doesn't help you long term if your issue is eating too much or eating without thinking about it. I'm not really a fan of all the keto/paleo/low carb etc stuff - it encourages a good food Vs bad food mindset which can be really unhelpful if you do binge at all, as it'll lead to negative spirals if you eat the "bad" food.

Honestly in my experience, calorie counting is the way to go. It leads automatically to portion control. I can still eat "bad" things, but instead just think of them as calorie dense, and often think "oh well I could have 20g of pitta crisps, or for fewer calories, 40g of sweet popcorn" which naturally leads to making better choices.

The downfall of course is that you could easily just eat 1600 cals of chocolate every day but that wouldn't be much food so you'd have to change your ways eventually.

I've been doing it since Feb on My fitness Pal and I'm now starting to think more about the macronutrients in the food I choose rather than simply the calorie content. I'm down to 1250 a day though so need to make sure I'm making good choices for my overall health.

OP posts:
honeysucklejasmine · 09/11/2018 08:55

Also, take up a new hobby to keep you busy when you usually snack.

OP posts:
happyharmonica · 09/11/2018 09:55

Thank you for the advice. I'll download that app and see how I go. I've had tinned spaghetti and eggs this morning to try and fill me up and stop snacking.

Will b keeping busy by cleaning the house today.

The weekend will be hard so will try to get out and about doing something.

Meal out tomorrow so need to make good choices there

FATEdestiny · 09/11/2018 16:56

Having now lost 7st 10, I can categorically say I never feel full up. Ever. And that's OK.

I've had to re-learn the subtle but very important scale of "fullness":

  • full up
  • capable of eating more
  • not being hungry
  • being hungry

I used to use "capable of eating" as a reason to eat. As in, "I'm not suffed to the brim so if I'm provided with a meal/seconds/dessert/snack/whatever then I'll eat it, because I physically can fit it in my stomach".

I would then always (or mostly) eat until full. As in no more will physically for in my stomach. It was that feeling that I called "satisfied".

I was never, ever "hungry". Not really, I just thought I was because I wasn't full up. I had lots of learning to do. Some things I've learnt:

○ being hungry is OK. Don't fear hunger, embrace it as part of your life as a slim person. It is not a bad thing, it's just a thing.

○ You should be hungry. In the run up to each meal, being hungry is right because it means you didn't overeat in the last meal. Think of hunger like you think of being tired before you go to bed - just a feeling.

○ You only need eat until you are no longer hungry.

○ If, like me, you never experience genuine hunger then you'll not be able to identify not being hungry. It does not take much food to no longer feel hungry.

○ There is never a need to eat until physically full up. Assuming you eat every 4-6 hours and are not running a marathon distance then you simply don't need that amount of food.

Its all very well saying all of the above, but making your mind believe it is a very different thing. In the words of the saying: "It's easier said than done"

happyharmonica · 09/11/2018 19:15

It sure is @FATEdestiny

I think I've done well today. Had three meals and one snack which is far better than I've done all week.

Looking forward to tomorrow and taking it one day at a time
