Today is a big day for me, a turning point! I've always been 'big' however have just been getting bigger and bigger. I want to lose 6 stone- starting from today.

Anyone else in the same boat who would like to swap inspiration and tips? Today I've planned to eat healthily and go for a nice long walk Grin

Clarinetv2, IKWYM! Although I'm still a size 18 I am a lot nearer to 'normal' looking than I have been for 10 years (omg, it's been that long, massive eye roll at myself).

I never join in conversations about losing weight or diets or fatness or other people's weight, not ever. Someone at work said to me a while ago, about someone we'd intereviewed "she's a larger lady' and it occurred to me afterwards that she was saying that because this woman was, actually, fat but that so was I. So she didn't want to use the fat word because it would tarnish me too. Nobody at work has commented on my weight loss but I'm not sure it's that noticable yet, especially if you see me every day.

So I totally get what you mean. Although, conversely, it would be odd if people didn't comment wouldn't it? I caught my mum looking me up and down recently when she thought I wasn't looking and for sure she noticed I'd lost weight but she didn't mention it. I bet you anything that when I'm a size 14 again she'll say "oh thank goodness, I was so worried about you, you were so so enormous and fat and vile and obese and disgusting before" - well, maybe not quite the last few but certainly some of that.

Sirzy · 21/08/2013 16:40

I am with you all!

I find myself getting irrationally annoyed when slim friends start talking about weight loss and needing to lose weight. I hated joining in such conversations as I felt like shouting "think yourself lucky"

clarinetV2 · 21/08/2013 16:57

Thanks, LayMizz, Samantha and Sirzy for putting into words exactly what I've been feeling but didn't know how to say!! Makes me feel a lot better - I've been giving myself a bit of a hard time for not being pleased at the 'compliments' but I'm now going to give myself permission to snarl inside even if I have to smile on the outside.

LayMizzRarb · 21/08/2013 17:06

I never 'congratulate' people for losing weight. I am interested in their story and admire the willpower I know too well is necessary, but would make comments, if a slimmer invites them, as to how it has affected their health and fitness - do they feel better for losing weight?
For every weight loss success that is commented on within a gathering 'oh you're fantastic for losing that weight' or 'you look so good, you looked bad 6 months ago' there is a person on the periphery of that group drinking in all your comments 'ugly, fat, bad person' - that's what you're saying.
I also think it's very unhealthy to make comments like that around teenagers. "Oh you've done so well". What kind of message is that giving out? Don't congratulate people for conforming to society's ideals, but for being healthier if the comments are solicited.

MiaWallace · 21/08/2013 17:37

Sirzy I have those conversations too. In work all the skinny women sit together picking at their salads complaining how disgusted they are with themselves for putting on 3 or 4 pound.

If they are so 'disgusted' by their own size 8 figures I must make them feel physically sick.

MiaWallace · 21/08/2013 17:37

oops I HATE those conversation not have those conversations!

HenriettaPye · 21/08/2013 17:59

I hate those conversations too.it always leaves me feeling awkward, thinking that if they think they are fat, what on earth do they think about me.

However I do say well done to people when they have been trying to and have lost weight. Because I know (only too well) how hard it is

phantomhairpuller · 21/08/2013 18:24

I had a friend once who was obsessed with her weight- she must have been a size 10 at most. I got so sick of her whining about her 'fat ass' that u snapped at her "if you think you're fat then what the fuck do you think of me?"
She told me I wasn't fat?!! I was a damn sight larger than her!

It pretty much ended our friendship ShockWink

phantomhairpuller · 21/08/2013 18:38

And my mother has a habit of moaning about her weight to me Confused

She's a size 12, tall with big boobs- wtf she has to complain about I'll never know! I sometimes wondering its her way of 'getting at me' about my weight- I'm a good 3-4 sizes bigger than her Hmm

TiredNursey · 21/08/2013 19:00

Everyone has done brilliantly.
I had the shine taken off me somewhat this morning after a visit to the GP.
My Blood Pressure is still elevated.
I've been taking it at home twice a day since my last visit and its been ok ish. High for the first week then near normal the last week.
But it didn't go lower than 107 diastolic in the surgery today. So Ive been referred for ambulatory monitoring and a 24hr tape. (ECG) I presume. It looks like I will have to start anti hypertensives.
I told her i was doing Simming World and she was lovely. She said if I dropped 2 stone it might make a difference, but thats not going to happen overnight. But really, because of family history, I may not get away with it even if I get the weight down.

I'd rather not have an early death from heart attack so thats even more motivation for me to get healthy.
My mantra is going to be "Only good fats for me"

HenriettaPye · 21/08/2013 19:20

Ll done everyone on the weight loss.

I am so glad I no longer work in an office. I remember those days, new diets being started every week by those wanting to lose 7lbs, different fads, joining the gym or going to Zumba in their dinner hour for a week or so. It was grim.

Is anyone doing the Cambridge diet? I have loads of choc tetras that need to go, would just cost the P&P.

YellowCanary1 · 21/08/2013 20:13

Agree with others I feel so uncomfortable in conversations about weight, feel as if people look at me expecting me to say, well yes, we all know I'm a fatty!!!!

On a positive note just ran 7k this time, with no stops! Aiming for a 10k in October and it is actually seeming possible now! And my size 14 dress arrived and fits beautifully! :-)

IKnewHouseworkWasDangerous · 21/08/2013 20:36

When thin people talk about weight watchers I get an involuntary image in my head - chocolate fudge cake and cream. And then I think about ramming it down their throats to shut em up.

IKnewHouseworkWasDangerous · 21/08/2013 20:37

Yeah yellow thats brilliant

ChippingInHopHopHop · 21/08/2013 21:02

TiredNursery :( I was diagnosed with diabetes in Jan, I also had 'high' cholesterol (which I don't actually care about, because if you research it, it really isn't important) and high blood pressure. To cut a LONG and very boring story short, I decided not to take Metformin for it, but to see what I could do with diet alone. I am now in the normal range for diabetes, my cholesterol is fine and my BP is normal. Is it worth you giving low carbing a go?

miemohrs - you don't have to do it alone, not at all. Come and join us on the Bootcamp Threads - tons & tons of support and meal/recipe ideas! There's always a thread going and there's an Autumn Bootcamp starting on the 9th of Sept :)

TiredNursey · 21/08/2013 21:06

You know I dont think I have ever met any woman who is happy with her weight.
And those slim people who think they are fat, (and in my eyes are normal) probably dont notice us as being really fat too.
About 5 yrs ago, when I was able to run, and was a size 14, I never ever thought I was slim. And yet, I was.
I would still pick up the size 16/18 in the shops to try on because there was no way (in my head) a 14 would fit. And no matter how many times I would do this silly routine, and have a size 16 falling off me in the fitting room, I'd do it again, each time.
Its all in the head.
And personally, I know a few people who are about the same size as me but only 2 people who are actually enormous. To the point of won't fit in the chairs in the seminar room at work.
And I don't really notice the other people. Far too caught up in my own poor body image.....
I don't think the really big ladies are disgusting.
I just think : poor thing, must be a nightmare in this weather. And maybe absent-mindedy think that one of them (who is only in her 20s) must be really unhappy to have got to that point.

I think I am disgusting if I catch sight of my gut in the mirror though.

MissElodie · 21/08/2013 21:10

Thanks for your birthday wishes Smile

We went out to Nandos for lunch and it was nice not to be worrying about the calories and just enjoy it!

notafoodbaby I'm in a similar position to you. I lost weight during my pregnancies and since my DD was born in January I have put on near 3 stone. Its not good when you're bigger than you were when you were pregnant!!

millymolly well done that's a brilliant weight loss!

tirednursey sorry to hear that Sad

I agree with what everyone saying about the weight conversations. I will never forget when a very senior manager was talking to my manager and made a totally derogatory and very inappropriate comment about an employees weight and my manager kind of nodded her head in my direction and said pointedly ' Very Senior Manager don't say things like that'. Meaning don't say that in front of Elodie cos shes a big fat beast too!! I was so embarrassed Sad. I am so happy I no longer work there!

Mia I know what you mean about blaming weight for other problems (mine are the same as yours) and I've always thought everything will fall into place when I am slim but actually I don't really know if that will be the case. Anyway not to get too deep and meaningful - whatever happens when I do get slimmer I know I will be a lot happier than I am now Smile.

TiredNursey · 21/08/2013 21:16

Chipping, thanks but low carbing is not for me.
I am definitely a carb eater. I can go low GI, but thats it for me!
I will manage it on Slimming World.
I Will

I think the mean comments were made by mean people, MissElodie. I really don't think most people think that way.

MissElodie · 21/08/2013 21:21

Samantha unfortunately my mum doesn't hide her looking up and down at me in disgust and she has in a round about way said those words to me and made me feel like crap. She said she did it to shock me but it certainly didn't work (made me worse if anything). I haven't seen her in a few months and have ballooned in that time so I'm dreading what she is going to say to me when I see her next month!

well done yellow you are doing fab!

Whoop whoop!! That's great, well done all of us.

Even after this short time I feel so much better - less bloated and more energy, but also stronger emotionally. I feel like I have taken back control of my body, and I'm in a better mood and getting loads more done.

I have become a compulsive MFP logger and check into this thread several times a day, and both have really helped get me on track.

So thank you all, and here's to another great week on our journey Wine Cheers.

LegoAcupuncture · 21/08/2013 21:52

Why thank you Grin. I'd like to take this opportunity to not thank all the cakes and crisps I've eaten over the years that have clung to my hips like distressed toddlers.

Happy birthday Elodie, glad you enjoyed your meal out. Nandos isn't too bad of a place to eat really.

ChippingInHopHopHop · 21/08/2013 21:57

TiredNursery Fair enough - and I'm sure you will :) You have been a 14 much, much more recently than me!! I just thought it was worth a mention as it has done great things for my BP. However, if it wasn't for the fact that it does wonders for my diabetes, I'd probably be thrilled about doing it Grin love love love pretty much every god damn carb there is

LayMizzRarb · 21/08/2013 21:57

Thanks for that round up! Encouraging to see my name 'in lights' Grin

A total of 11.5 lbs off so far and I honestly feel fitter even for that small amount (at least 12 stone to go) lost.
