If you've poked your head around the door of this thread then please read ourOld Thread, read all the posts, all the links and the links within links and then jump in with both feet to a new, better Way Of Eating (WOE)

Roll Up, Roll Up for the all new, amazing thread for those of us who are trying to eat good, healthy, natural foods while counting our calories and eating LOADS!

We had some brilliant successes on the last thread - inches AND pounds lost and lots of people feeling happier, calmer and more focussed on their goals.

Remember that this is NOT a DIET, it is a healthy way of eating. You will NOT lose 5lbs a week - you might even GAIN weight in the first weeks!

Just checking in. Slightly embarrassed to still be on this thread as I have been failing epically of late - I keep falling off the wagon head first into a vat of chocolate? have had a cold this week which doesn't help, and the mother of all deadlines because I've been commissioned - get this! - to write an actual BOOK. In two weeks (well, one now). All v v exciting but absolutely NO time to exercise, or watch TV, or speak to DH, etc.

vezzie · 16/07/2012 10:02

Oh Minniebar, how exciting! What is your book about?
I've had a good week off work, camping, cuddling little girls and one medium sized man, and am feeling relatively trim (pshaw - it really is all relative). Now I have to see if I can keep positive and eat well now I'm back at work.
I am thinking the Boris bike might save me - if I can get to the station for one train earlier (bike rather than walk) it might make the whole evening nicer...

MinnieBar · 16/07/2012 18:06

It's, ahem, tips for relationships. Blush Of the, um, physical kind Blush Blush yes it's a sex book

I am by no means an expert, feeling slightly fraudulent about it all, but not enough not to take the money!

Hopefully · 17/07/2012 07:05

Well, I utterly failed to be sensible while on foot-rest, but I am back on the whom with a vengeance now! Start new job training in 10 days and it would be a big confidence boost if I'm looking a good as I can by then.

Minnie congrats on the sex book!

Have jut had yummy but healthy baked oatmeal breakfast. Onwards and downwards!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/07/2012 07:38

Minnie that is awesome Grin

Gah yesterday was bad. I really need to get back into logging my food.

BsshBossh · 17/07/2012 10:40

Yey, Minnie!

Well, as of this week I've increased my exercise so that I move from "light" to "moderate" exercise on the TDEE calculator. This means my daily cals go from 1800 to 2000. I'll weigh again in a few weeks time and see if I'm still losing.

bunjies · 18/07/2012 10:15

Ooh Minnie you minx Wink see what I did there?

Still hanging in there. No weight loss and my tummy still sticks out massively but I don't think I've put on any either. Started week 4 of my weight training and am now lifting 5kg per dumbell .

quirkychick · 20/07/2012 07:25

Hi everyone! How are you all?

Feeling sorry for myself as have hurt my shoulder carrying dd2 (she weighs 2stone and has sn so not walking independently). Has been sore for a while: Dr Google says I need to stop lifting heavy weights, more than 5lbs. bunjies I will have to put down my 5kg dumbells for a while .

Dd1 has had high temp fluey thing and only just better. Dd2 had asthma attack yesterday and we ended up at OOH. Calories ended up quite low as lots of rushing around etc. Good thing is I need to get dd2 to gp this am so will take myself and pesky shoulder.

How's your chest Shirl? And your toe Hopefully?

I have been low carbing (like knitknack) but changed slowly. Now my body is used to it I feel much less hungry and don't need to snack so much/think about food all the time. I've been using the unflavoured impact, which I think I prefer, mixed with greek yoghurt, flaxseed and fruit for my fridge porridge. Smoothie with almond milk, impact, flaxseed, almond extract and frozen black forest fruits for breakfast today. Yum, yum.

knitknack · 21/07/2012 21:42

I'm still here! Still at it. Still can't BELIEVE that I've actually found a way of eating that works and is unsustainable :). Still feeling great. Have started to impose my new knowledge on the kids (dh jumped on board ages ago). Kids are little erm, unsure "it's all because mummy's been reading those stupid books" but seem happier and healthier. Am gorging myself on fruit at the moment, usually drenched in double cream, so hardly suffering!!

I might try that breakfast smoothie idea quirky - it sounds amazing! Where did you get your almond extract

knitknack · 21/07/2012 21:46

Sorry - I forgot the '?' ! :)

quirkychick · 22/07/2012 07:41

Hi knitknack! I think we got almond extract from waitrose. I love it. I also do a "fridge porridge" with greek yoghurt, flaxseed, impact protein and fruits, so no oats (I gradually reduced them). Very delicious.

I had plateaued, and now I'm even more low carbing: no starchy foods/grains/sugar, but also eating delicious things like frozen berries with double cream .

I have lost another 2lbs. That's 8lbs altogether, 1/2" of my waist, another 1" off bust, underbust and hips. The fat is melting away. Just as well because I have a rotator cuff shoulder injury so I have to stop the arm weights at the moment. Ggrrrrrrrr.

knitknack · 23/07/2012 09:05

Thanks quirky, that's brilliant. I'm SO happy with where I am - I don't seem to be losing any more but at 5'10" and 10.1 I think that's because I've found a good weight for me - I don't want to disappear, I love the yummy food we're eating, I feel brilliant, I'm a very happy bunny. I sill look like a woman who's had two children but I like that and I love fitting into all my dresses. Two months ago I honestly thought there was no answer to feeling tired all the time and having a big belly :)

AuxeyDuresses · 23/07/2012 10:02

quirky I did my rotator cuff 4 years ago. You have my sympathy.

I am a potential newbie to the thread - I have a question.
Is anyone on approx 1750-1800 cals a day, a good few stone overweight and losing weight??
I have never done calorie counting. I can't stand being hungry. So after lurking here for a while I thought this may be the way for me. Need to lose 5st. I'm happy to lose weight slowly as long as I can have a generous calorie allowance because if I am hungry I will rebel!
Did the calculator wotsit on the other thread and it says my resting BMR is 1650...so theoretically I should lose on 1800?

quirkychick · 25/07/2012 08:20

AuxeyDuresses how long did your rotator cuff take to heal? Dp's took 9 months (but he had had the injury for years).

Have you used the scooby calculator to work out bmr/tdee -15% your tdee seems quite low? I was on 1900cals at 11st+ but am now on 1860 at 10st 8. But I am moderately active. My bmr is at 1400.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 28/07/2012 08:54

AuxeyDuresses on the calculator, make sure you put in how active you normally are in a day. I find, even just doing the housework and looking after DD, with a slow walk in there somewhere, I easily hit the light exercise level everyday. (I'm tracking mine with a fitbit) Then set your goal as -15% and see how many calories it gives you in the 3rd box (Daily calories based on goal in step 6)

My BMR is now 1900, my TDEE is over 2600, so my goal is 2240.

Just be sure to eat back exercise calories that drop you below your BMR, back up to your BMR again.

If I do the shred, I usually burn over 400 cals. If I've eaten my goal 2240-450 = 1790, so I need to eat 110 cals to get back up to my BMR 1900.

To be honest, on the bad days I don't hit my goal, but I do always try to hit my BMR. Although the weight isn't falling off, the inches are. I at the end of May (I think) and I've lost 7lbs, 4 inches of my waist, 3 off my hips and an inch and a half of my neck. I look better, my skin is the best it's been in years, and most of all, I feel good!

FairPhyllis · 28/07/2012 16:45

OK, so I was on the last thread briefly, then majorly fell off the wagon and gained three pounds in a month. I think the key for me is being more active, so I have set my activity level to light exercise to get me in the swing of things to start with and will try to do two exercise sessions a week (swimming and a fitness class). Hopefully I can increase it in a month or so.

So, my BMR is 1496. My TDEE is 2057, so that puts my daily calories at 1748.

If anyone wants to add me on MFP, my username is bishopfox.

MadameGazelle · 28/07/2012 17:00

Hi everyone, I've been lurking on this thread and the previous one and am so happy to be losing weight without being "on a diet", I've lost a stone in 9 weeks which is slow and steady but I know the weight won't ever be going back on. I've got another 10-14lbs to lose so I'm halfway there Smile

quirkychick · 29/07/2012 08:32

Well done MadameGazelle! Great name

I have just found out Julian Graves is shutting tomorrow Sad. Where will I get my milled flaxseed? We have an organic mini supermarket near us but it is £££. I will have to check out other places.

I have lost 9lbs altogether in 60 days according to mfp. Slow and steady, it took a while to get going but it's really happening now. I am pre-children weight and have been wearing sleeveless tops and even halternecks that I'd put away in case I ever lost weight. [chuffed emoticon]. I just need to reduce my waist so my waist/hip ratio is healthier. bmi from 26 down to 23.

Auxey · 31/07/2012 08:16

Hi, it's Auxey without the Duresses (too much to type when I login Grin )

Quirky my rotator cuff took about a year to fully heal, but it was much better and I had more arm/shoulder mobility by about 4 months. Don't want to sound like a monger of doom though, do bear in mind I was in my late 40's at the time and terribly unfit. A younger person would hopefully recover more quickly. Well done on your weight loss and yay for the healthy BMI!

MrsMango I think you're doing really well and would be happy to achieve what you have in just a bit less than two months. Thanks for the help with the TDEE etc I am going to crunch all the numbers again later today and see what I come up with.

MadameGazelle considering you only wanted to lose one and a half stone-ish I think you've done very well indeed.
I'm reassured by seeing all this success. I grew up thinking the only way to lose weight was on 1200 or less cals a day and I just know I can't possilby stick to that.

Thanks everyone!

quirkychick · 31/07/2012 09:21

Auxey I am in my early 40s, so not that young! I had a physio assessment on sat, and she thought I had irritated the muscle, so should heal quite well. Both physio and gp mentioned cortisone injections if not. Tbh, I need to be able to lift dd2, so if it comes to it I will have the jabs. Much better with ibuprofen - yay for drugs!

Auxey · 31/07/2012 10:13

Quirky how's the mobility in your arm? I couldn't raise my arm, and it was so weak that I couldn't even push a heavy car door to shut. Luckily it was my left arm (I'm right handed) so I found ways round it.
It sounds as if your physio is optimistic about your recovery.
I didn't have a cortisone injection in my shoulder, but I have had one in my elbow about 10 years ago. Everyone told me it would be horrible blah blah but it wasn't at all. For the first 48 hours after, it hurt more than it had before the injection, then it healed. No point hanging round for months for something to recover if the gp thinks there are other ways to go. Hopefully you can lift dd2 soon!

Auxey · 31/07/2012 10:13

ps my physio told me that rotator cuff injuries and tears are 'the curse of the middle-aged'. That really made me feel great Grin

BsshBossh · 31/07/2012 10:58

Hello, just checking back in. Didn't manage to log my cals in MFP for a week or so due to stomach illness then holiday but due to the illness I know I was eating less than my allotted cals. Back to logging yesterday. On 1800 again as back to light rather than moderate exercise. I'll weigh myself in a couple of weeks.

quirkychick · 31/07/2012 18:54

Hope you feel better now BsshBossh.

Auxey my mobility is much better due to drugs. I can lift my arm but it hurts when it's level with my shoulder. I can't up the ibuprofen any more as my stomach doesn't like it . I'm using my right arm too as left shoulder affected. I do have to lift dd2 but I'm trying to only do it when necessary and mostly right handed!

ShirleyKnot · 03/08/2012 21:02

Hello all! I am back in the Uk and ashamed of myself.

Let's just say that ate LOTS of bread and burgers and stuff fried in oil and chocolates and...

I will be back on Monday.
